Joint venture between Tata Motors and Fiat is likely to launch a number of Chrysler models in India, including the iconic Jeep

Cherokee, from a factory in Ranjangaon near Pune as it seeks to expand its presence in one of the world’s fastest growing passenger car market. Sources close to the development, who did not wish to be identified, said that Tata-Fiat alliance will initially start retailing the Cherokee and follow up with other products. Italian auto major Fiat acquired a 20% stake in Chrysler after the Michigan-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year. The Tata-Fiat alliance has been expanding production at its Ranjangaon facility. While it produces the Linea sedan and the Punto hatchback from the Fiat stable, it has also started producing the Tata Indigo Manza sedan from this facility. The Manza will be powered by diesel and petrol engines from Fiat.

Recently, Fiat India Automobiles (FIAPL), the Tata Motors-Fiat JV raised $510 million through a multi-tranche syndicated loan, which includes a $200 million term loan for working capital requirements. FIAPL a 50:50 joint venture between Fiat Group and Tata Motors, manufactures Fiat and Tata cars and produces transmissions and engines. The JV, which was set up in 2007, plans to invest close to Rs 4,020 crore at its Ranjangaon facility. By 2012, Ranjangaon plant would be capable of producing two lakh cars, three lakh diesel engines, and three lakh spare parts and accessories per annum. Currently Tata Motors has the responsibility of selling Fiat products through its wide distribution network across the country.

When asked about the possible launch of Chrysler brands at the sidelines of the Punto launch recently, Fiat Group Chief Operating Officer (International Operations) Filverio Bonfiglioli was non-committal. Fiat’s 20%, stake in Chrysler could eventually go up to 51%. Chrysler will get access to Fiat’s small car technology while Fiat gets a footprint into the US market. With financing from the Federal Government, the `new Chrysler’ is supposed to change its product portfolio towards fuel-efficient vehicles. Some of the other well-known Chrysler brands are Avenger, Caliber, Challenger and Viper, and it retails the Dakota and Sprinter in the truck segment.

Re: Can FIAT Re-Establish Itself in India?

Fiat to launch Alfa Romeo in India. May also bring the Jeep and Chrysler brands. The Jeep brand will be seen in Premium SUV segments while Chrysler might join the likes of the Germans and Jags in the high end luxury car segment. There is also a possibility of the Chrysler cars being bought to India through the completely knocked down(CKD) route and assembled in India. - MotorBeam

Re: Fiat Might Bring Chrysler and Jeep Grand Cherokee

It isn't just a rumor this time. Fiat is seriously considering to launch these brands in India. I'm attaching an excerpt from Economic Times:
A team of senior officials from Chrysler recently visited India to conduct product clinics for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, an SUV in a price segment similar to that of Toyota's Fortuner, Ssangyong's Rexton and Chevrolet's Captiva. A person close to the development said a blueprint is being created to increase Fiat's presence in India with new models and, if these plans fructify, the new launches will be outside the 50:50 joint venture Fiat has with Tata Motors to make cars for the two companies as well as transmissions and engines.

The Chrysler model will be brought into the country in completely-knocked-down (CKD) condition and assembled at the Tata-Fiat manufacturing operations in Ranjangaon, near Pune, on contract; the Fiat brands will be brought in via the CBU (completely built unit) route. People close to Fiat point out that Chrysler has big plans for emerging markets, and India is at the core of that strategy.

It is indeed a great news for Indian auto industry. But in India XUV 500 would sell more in volumes because of the price tag rather a Jeep. We all want Ferrari (most of us) but how many of us can actually maintain it !

JEEP Wants to Enter Indian Market

As most of you would know Fiat has a majority holding in Chrysler who own's the Jeep brand, according to the latest news jeep wants to enter indian market with their 'Wrangler' & 'Grand Cherokee'.
Both are a pretty competitive product's and the Jeep brand has a good brand recall in India too,the only problem i see here is that these product's will be imported and will carry a hefty price and gonna be competing with the big German luxury marques.
What is your opinion about this strategy will it produce good sales number's or will it be another Fiat story?

Re: Fiat India Serious About Bringing Chrysler and JEEP Brand

I am sure that Jeep can stay well in India. Even if its on the higher segment! The people who have cash would always opt for an Wrangler than a Thar.
Uff. I am excited!

Chrysler cars are not that popular in US and i personally don't like their cars either. Reason they have high maintenance and less resale value. But yes Jeep are really good SUV's and if they price the Grand Cherokee properly (not too high) it will certainly do good in the Indian market.
You can even all the Jeep models in US by going on to the link below:

I personally like the Grand Cherokee among all the models of Jeeps. It's a really nice machine

You are right buddy but they cannot price Grand Cherokee with XUV 500 but if Jeep launches it's low end models then they can compete the XUV 500.

Not the Grand Cherokee but if they launch the Compass and Patriot then they might.
