Friends,

According to a 112 Page Report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Govt. Of India) it has been found that in the year 2015, there were a total of 5,01,423 road accidents in India which is 2.5% higher than the 2014 stats that stand at 4,89,400. Also the number of on-road deaths in 2015 have increased by 4.6% in comparison to 2014 and in 2015 the figure stood at 1,46,133. Though we have a separate thread for Accidents in India but these stats in my humble opinion needs a separate thread as it is dealing with the precise statistics. The top 3 states in terms of Accidents in 2015 were Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh and the Top 3 states in "Most of number of people killed" in road accidents in 2015 were U.P. , Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

It is really a sad state of affairs in terms of Indian traffic sensibilities. The cause of on-road death or accident could be anything but the most unfortunate part being the loss of life and life long void in the lives of family members.

Regards

It is really sad and shocking to see this statistics of road accident but I pray that this shouldn't turn for the worse. Auto manufacturers are bringing more powerful engines and this is the perfect boost for more accidents - reasons -
1. Our mentality of "who's vehicle will outrun others", thereby showing ignorance to basic rules of safe and sensible driving on highway / city roads.
2. Many Tin Cans / two wheelers on road.
Unless we practice safe and sensible driving, the statistics will reach new high.

Friends,
At present India accounts for 10 percent of global road accidents with more than 1.46 lakh fatalities annually, highest in the world.
No wonder, given our road and car safety awareness. Hopefully Bharat NCAP helps reduce these numbers with relatively safer cars and increased consumer awareness. At least that will be a good step forward.

there is a saying in tamil " elimination of robery is in the hands of the theif" likewise accidents can be eliminated only if safe driving practices are followed. As far as Tn accidents go, few stretches like chidamabaram to velankanni, villupuram- cuddalore-pondicherry, dindugal- palani are prone to very rash driving espically by state buses.

70% of the Indian truck drivers have poor eye sight and the test has been done by NHAI people. Ophthalmologists have done this check up for approximately 700 truck drivers and 70% of them were reported to have poor eye sight and even few had eye sights ranging between 20-30 meter! That's less than the average braking distance of a fully loaded truck! I wonder how safe our highways are when these drivers drive, specially in the night!

Most accident today are caused due to ill mannered driving but this can be reduced if children from teenage are taught ettiquetes and rules early and parent are their ideal so they should also follow the rules so that the children do not break rule when he drives after the legal age and moreover i think the age for license in India should be reduced as a lot of teenage driver are causing accident.

That's shocking indeed. This factor along with rash driving causes so many accidents. Government should seriously look into it and bring in more stringent rules and regulations before giving permits to truck drivers.
