Indian Cars with Most Solid and Poor Resale Values

There are many cars in our country, which are instant hit and hold the great resale value figures, but unfortunately, some cars like Cedia, in spite of being good are going at cheap prices in the pre-owned car market. However, many factors influence the resale value of a car but let us today discuss about the resale value of various cars sold in India, along with the reason why it is solid or poor. To begin, I am adding some names of a few cars, reasons to follow shortly.

Cars sold in India with solid resale:

  • Maruti Swift
  • Honda City
  • Honda Civic
  • Toyota Corolla
  • Mercedes C-Class.
Cars sold in India with poor resale:

  • Ford Mondeo
  • Chevrolet Aveo
  • Hyundai Elantra
  • Hyundai Sonata
  • Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia

What about Fiat cars like Palio , Siena , Petra , Uno etc I think they also have poor re-sale value. And also cars like Ford Escort , Peugeot , Opel Astra , Daewoo Matiz , Mitsubishi Lancer also has poor re-sale value i guess.

Verna CRDI has good re-sale value! Similarly Toyota Qualis too has good re-sale value!

I think we should discuss about cars currently in production. Cars out of production will anyways suffer from poor resale unless its a OHC or lancer!

@ dhaya: Qualis is not in production!

Punto - no fault of the car, just the brand image & Tata A.S.S. My relative in Kerela needed a second hand hatch & he found 2 pretty new puntos at a very cheap price.

Beat - same with the beat. maybe since its not selling well, god knows for what reason.

Rajeev, no offence, but you seems to have some bad image set-up in your mind. And you don't want to come out of it.
Mahindra is as bad as Tata (almost) how can Scorpio has good resale?

You are just giving verdict just based on what you heard of your friends.
I am not defending Punto, for resale value. It will have poor resale compared to Marutis, but its very early to give the trend. It is going to take sometime for newer cars to set resale values. Fiat's older cars like Palio, UNO etc have poor resale.

no offence taken buddy. I do not agree that mahindra is as bad as tata, not even almost. yes, the A.S.S is as bad. boleros & scorpios enjoy better resale than sumos & safaris, as owners face lesser issues with mahindras & mahindra vehicles are known to last longer, so they have a good reputation in the second hand market.

Get a quote from a second hand dealer for a scorpio & safari & you would know the difference. For your comparison, you can even check carwale.

I just added punto based on my recent experience buddy. by the way, my relative ended up buying a second hand i20. both cars had approx 20k on the odo, the punto was top end while the i20 was base variant, still the punto was cheaper. he bought the i20 fearing the resale value of the punto after 5-6 years when he plans to upgrade to a sedan.

that said, i still say the car is not at fault, its a superb car. given a choice, i would opt for the punto petrol over the i20 petrol as i dont care about A.S.S or resale.

well basically any maruti product would sell in good numbers even though being in used market same case lies with tata with brand image working on both the markets.
Mahindra has mixed reactions at new cars and in used market.
Also add hyundai accent in bad resale value list.
Ford's fiesta also carried bad resale value.

From what I have observed,

Maruti and Hyundai enjoy a better resale value while Ford and Chevy lag behind. Tata is another one that does poorly in comparison to Mahindra. Honda and Toyota rule the roost while Skoda sinks like a tank. The game in the segments higher up is slightly different as most luxury cars tend to drop significantly in their resale values.

But then again, it is the re-sale values that reveal such interesting gems in the used car market [;)]

For me, wheels are meant to be enjoyed. So long as I don't sink in my money with my eyes wide shut, I should have no reason to complain about[glasses].

i20 is anyway costly (When I bought Punto D, my friend payed more to buy i20 P with less features). The only difference is I have driven 15K+ KM, he has just ~3K. His maintainance cost is more than mine.
And also, I don't know whats your friends mindset was to buy a car looking just at re-sale, that too he plans to keep for 5-6 years.
Financial, Knowing Hyundai cars will be costly (comparative to Punto) to maintain, its not going to much difference. Not a wise decision, in my book (again I appreciate his decision, but can't agree).

Anyway, let us not go again with i20 vs Punto (its so interesting to discuss though[:)]).
My point was, Puntos (or even Polo or Figo) resale can't be judged at this point. Very few cars are available for resale and no definite trend how it will go. I am sure though, Fiat cars will not match the resale value of Marutis/Hyundais.
