Hyundai has released details on its forthcoming B-segment SUV, called the Bayon. It’s due to reach the European market in the first half of 2021, with sales expected to start in the latter half of the year.
Some may note that Hyundai already has a B-segment SUV in its range called the Kona. But, from what we understand, the Bayon - named after the city of Bayonne in southwest France - is designed to sit below this model, acting as a cheaper alternative to the Nissan Juke and SEAT Arona.

For now, the only image we have of the Bayon is this shadowy teaser, which previews the SUV’s tailgate and rear light design. Given its size, we expect the Bayon will share its platform and powertrain range with the latest i20. The hatchback’s petrol-only line-up consists of an 83bhp 1.2-litre four-cylinder unit and a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder mild-hybrid unit, with either 99bhp or 118bhp.
Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Hyundai’s Vice President of Marketing, said: “Hyundai is strongly established in the European SUV market already, in terms of our model range as well as our sales success.
“By launching a new, additional B-segment model as the entry point into our SUV line-up, we see a great opportunity to cover European customers’ demand even better and to increase our offering in a highly popular segment.”

Hyundai Bayon unveiled: Hyundai’s new cross-over contender

Hyundai has just showcased their new crossover the Bayon that will go on sale in International markets. The Bayon marks Hyundai’s full-scale entry into the increasingly lucrative crossover space, replacing the i20 Active, and taking on the likes of the Volkswagen T-Cross and the Ford Puma. Previously, this was a spot where Hyundai chose to sell the i20 when the segment was still in nascent stages. The Bayon which seems like a more well rounded cross-over with more space and tech on offer will be better equipped to make a splash in the space. Incidentally the name is pronounced “Bye-on” after Bayonne in the south of France, playing to the target audience.

In terms of design, the Hyundai Bayon is a sort of confluence between the Kona and the new generation of the i20. From the rear it does seem a lot like a taller version of the present generation of the i20 but from the front the arrow-shaped LED headlamps and the slim DRLs are similar to the newest generation of the Kona. The curved roofline seems to indicate more space on the inside, but tapers off towards the back of the car to give that authentic cross-over presence to the Bayon. To add to the butch factor, the Bayon sports faux skid-plate and beefy cladding all around.

The Bayon is based on the i20 and shares its wheelbase with it, but has been designed with intention of creating more space for the passenger, allowing more leg-room both in front and at the back, more leg room and more boot space.

The Bayon will be offered with two engine trims with a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated motor with 84bhp and 1.0 litre turbo-petrol that will be sold in 100bhp and 120bhp states of tune. It is likely that the 1.0litre turbo will be offered mainly in markets like the UK, which will not get the 1.2 litre motor. The turbo-motors will be offered with the 6-speed iMT while a 5-speed manual will be offered with the NA 1.2.
