Google confirms shutting down Allo as it struggles to get messaging strategy right

In response to report detailing Google’s plan to kill Allo, the company published a blog post that aims to set the record straight. In the blog, Google reiterates its strategy to focus only on Android Messages and Duo for consumers while Hangouts Chat and Meet will be aimed at businesses. It adds that as part of that strategy Allo is going away and the Mountain View-based company plans to shutdown the app at the end of March 2019.

Google Maps adds auto-rickshaws as mode of public transport

Google Maps on Android now supports auto-rickshaws as a mode of public transport. Using the new feature, commuters will be able to see suggested routes and check estimated auto-rickshaw fares directly from within the app. The feature will be rolling out for commuters in New Delhi, starting today.

According to Android Police, Google has now begun rolling out the new spam protection feature to the Messages app. Since it’s a server-side update and Messages is used by billions of Android users across the world, it may take a while for the new functionality to be enabled for everyone.

Google Chrome’s built-in adblocking functionality to be rolled out globally in July

Through a post on the official blog of the Chromium project, Google has announced that starting July 9, its Chrome browser will stop showing ads on websites (regardless of the region they are hosted out of) that repeatedly serve disruptive ads. It’s worth mentioning that Google Chrome follows Better Ads Standards, a set of specifications developed by the Coalition for Better Ads, an industry consortium dedicated to improving the browser experience for customers.

Google to remove Play Store apps that require Call Logs and SMS permissions

In a bid to ensure the privacy and transparency of users data, Google has announced that it will begin eliminating apps from the Google Play Store that demands access to users Call Log or SMS permission. In simpler terms, the apps that are violating the Call Log or SMS permission rules will soon be removed, which will further prevent data leaks to some extent.

Google Chrome browser for macOS, Windows 10 to soon get native Dark Mode

Dark mode enables a black color-themed default page for new tabs, menus, interaction bars, and even background. It is possible that Google will enable its dark theme with the launch of Chrome 74, scheduled for April, The Verge reports. The reasons for implementing this mode is to improve visibility in low light conditions, and also enhance the autonomy of devices.
