Google Messages RCS works in India; promises next-gen messaging alternative to SMS, WhatsApp

Google-Messages-RCS-Messaging.jpg

Google has long been working on Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol that is meant to replace the aging SMS. SMS as a protocol has been around since the early days of the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM). For context, the first SMS message was sent back in 1992. This makes the protocol about 27 years old. Moving to RCS, it builds on SMS to offer advanced features such as typing indicators, file transfer, and more. This makes it somewhat closer to what we get on WhatsApp but without the need for a third-party Facebook-owned app. To understand Google Messages RCS, let’s focus on the development of RCS.

waited for pixel 4, and just ordered pixel 3 as pixel 4 is not coming to india. It may not have the high end hardware, but look and feel is entirely different with pixel devices. Its like Enfield/Safari. Ones you own it, it will be too difficult to get out of that hangover....

Google rolls out Dark Theme for Gmail on iOS and Android; Here’s how to activate

With the launch of Android 10 and iOS 13, both Google and Apple allowed its users to apply system-wide dark themes. The rollout is taking place in phases to avoid server congestion. The update is expected to fully rollout to all devices in the next few weeks.

To get Gmail’s dark theme on Android, you need to open the Gmail app, click on the hamburger menu at the top left corner and then navigate to Settings. In the Settings panel, you need to press General settings, then click on Theme and then select the Dark option. Pixel owners get an additional feature, which is that whenever their Battery Savel mode is enabled the Gmail app on its own will turn on the dark theme.

Google Photos now lets users manually tag people in photos

Several months after confirming that manually tagging people on Google Photos will become a reality, the company has finally rolled out the feature in which users will be able to manually add in many of the faces that its algorithm misses out on. Those hoping that the feature would allow you to point at any area in an image and add a tag to it, will be disappointed.

Face tagging feature still relies on the tech giant’s algorithm and its ability to detect a person or pet’s face to begin with, Android Police reported on Wednesday. To manually tag people, open Google Photos, look for any picture with people or pets in it, and swipe up or tap the overflow key on the top right. This brings up the updated EXIF panel with the People section, recognized persons’ avatars, and an edit icon or pen on the right.
