Starting today, parents in India will be able to download the app from the Apple App Store. The app will be available in the Google Play Store by the end of the week.

Messenger Kids is a video chat and messaging app that helps kids connect with friends and family in a fun, parent-controlled space. The company in a press release said that they continue to consult child safety advocates and educators to ensure a service that balances parental control with features that help kids learn how to connect responsibly online.

Messenger Kids is full of features for kids. Once their account is set up by a parent, kids can start a one-on-one or group video chat. The home screen shows them at a glance who they are connected with to, and when those contacts are online. In addition to video chat, kids can send photos, videos or text messages to their parent-approved friends and adult relatives, who will receive the messages via their regular Messenger app.

The concept of large group calls has become widespread with the coronavirus crisis keeping people at home. The popularity of video calling apps like Zoom seems to have triggered Facebook to join the race. And now Facebook has released it’s own answer called Facebook Messenger Rooms. This is just an expanded version of the video calling feature of the Facebook Messenger. But video calls on Facebook Messenger was limited in terms of people who can join and everyone needed a Facebook account.

But with Messenger Rooms, the upper limit of the people who can join in has been increased to 50. Besides this, those that don’t have a Facebook account can also join in. The person who creates a Messenger room will have a link generated which can be shared and used to join the room. Another big feature is that there will be no time limit to the video calls made from Messenger rooms. Users can join a Messenger Room using the Messenger app.

Facebook allows users to lock their profile in India

Facebook users in India are now getting a new privacy feature which helps them lock their profile. This will ensure that any random person trying to look for your photos or profile picture is not able to see them. The company has made this option thinking about safety of women on the platform but even male users on Facebook can lock their profile picture if they want to. The feature is rolling out to users in India in the coming week

So once the person enables the profile lock, the other person will only be able to see the profile picture. They will not be able to expand the size of the image or see anything else. Anyone will be able to access the feature from more option on their profile. Over there users will have to tap on the lock profile option. Once it’s enabled, you will see a blue badge in front of the profile which means it is locked.

Good news! Facebook Messenger will now warn you of potential scams

Facebook on Thursday announced that its Messenger is getting a new safety feature to prevent people from harmful interactions and possible scams. In a statement, the social media giant said that the feature would cause safety notices to pop up in chats, and they will give tips on how to spot suspicious activities and block or ignore a person who might potentially cause harm to the user. It added that the rolling out of the feature for Android-based platforms had commenced in March, and next week, this feature would also be rolled out for iOS users across the globe.

The company said that it is coming with tools to preserve the privacy of its users without accessing the messages as it moves towards end-to-end encryption of chats over Messenger. Facebook said that this feature has been developed through machine learning which looks for signals like an adult sending friend requests to a lot of minors. Through this, the feature would be available and effective once the end-to-end encryption on Messenger kicks in.

Facebook to verify if viral posts are coming from humans or not

Facebook is going to start verifying profiles that have a larger reach. The social networking platform wants to make sure high-reach posts are coming from humans and not via bots. Facebook said it will verify the identity of people whose posts start to rapidly go viral in the US. This will be done to make sure the genuity of the people behind these posts is known to everyone on the platform.

The platform has been used to share objectionable content, without taking action against it. Identifying these account will help Facebook to catch the perpetrators. And the company is going to limit reach of accounts that don’t get verified. “If someone chooses not to verify their identity or the ID provided does not match the linked Facebook account, the distribution of their viral post will remain reduced so fewer people will see it,” Facebook explained.

Facebook launches Collab app for making music videos

pic-collab.jpg

Facebook is using its internal R&D team called NPE to launch new-age mobile products. The latest one from the division is called Collab. This app lets users collaborate for making music videos. So unlike TikTok, Collab will let you create original music videos and share them with others.

The videos on Collab will not be longer than 15 seconds. And clearly this platform is not targeted at the professional musicians. Instead, the app will let anyone create visuals playing an instrument or any object. Interestingly, Collab allows you to share content through Instagram and Facebook. instead of competing with TikTok, it wants people to use their creations and post it on the video platform.

Facebook now allows transfer pictures to Google Photos with this tool

Facebook’s Google Photos transfer tool is now available globally to everyone. Part of a program involving Facebook, Microsoft, Google and Twitter established in 2018, the tool allows users to create copies of all of the photos or videos on Facebook account and transfer them to a linked Google Photos one. The idea is to let users easily transfer their data from one service to another.

“People can access this new tool in Facebook settings within Your Facebook Information, the same place where you can download your information. We have kept privacy and security as top priorities, so all data transferred will be encrypted and people will be asked to enter their password before a transfer is initiated,” the company said in a statement.

To begin transferring Facebook photos and videos to Google Photos, users will first need to go to “Your Facebook Information” in Facebook Settings. Select the ‘Transfer a Copy of Your Photos or Videos’ option and verify identity by entering Facebook password.

Facebook rolls out new notification screen to alert users for sharing old news

facebook-news-alter_425_735.jpg

Facebook has started rolling out a new feature on its platforms that will restrict users to share old news. The company revealed that it will show a notification screen that will let people know if they share an old news article.

The company says that it will alert users when they share news articles, which are older than 90 days. The notification screen will appear when people click the share button on articles older than 90 days but will allow people to continue sharing if they decide an article is still relevant.

“Over the past several months, our internal research found that the timeliness of an article is an important piece of context that helps people decide what to read, trust and share. News publishers, in particular, have expressed concerns about older stories being shared on social media as current news, which can misconstrue the state of current events,” the company said in a blog post.

Facebook Messenger on mobile gets screen sharing feature
