Sometimes we may see the term "engine lathe work done" when checking the history of the used cars in the authorized service centers (past records of the car to get the details of service and maintenance undertaken). What all can be the possible work involved in "engine lathe work" ?

thanks for the link. I posted this question to know more about what category work has been undertaken on the engine and how A.S.S usuallly categorizes the lathe work on engines.

Trying to know the requirement for why major integeral part (piston, rings, reboring) of the engine requires a lathe work and symptoms after effects of the same.

example : when a piston needs to be changed and when (and why) reboring should be done

Re-boring wouldn't be done on a lathe. This would be done on a milling machine. Trying to re-bore on a lathe is a bodge job.

When pistons are changed sometimes a re-bore is necessary especially when the bores are oval or scratched. In all other cases the cylinders will be honed.

After a long term of operation the engine side wall wears ,obviously there is no other option but to re machine the wall to smooth out irregularities as mentioned above by drifter and use bigger Diameter pistons.

yes, engine block on lathe for reboring, does sound nightmarish. alignment for the machining would be next to impossible for such a complex part .
it would better be done on milling machine.
