Thread for information & queries on Indian Customs Rules & Regulation, import duties, anything & everything related to that.
Customs Manual 2011

Let me post my query first.
My understanding is that, duty free allowance for an Indian resident returning homeland after 3 months is 25k INR and for used items the value is amounted after depreciation. I have purchased 2 cameras, 1 camcorder, 1 external HDD & few electronic toys, whose bill value is around 600 pounds (43k INR approx)

My questions are
1) Do they consider cameras (at least one) as 'used personal effects'?
2) What is the depreciation rate they account?
3) What will be the duty I should pay for the value excess of 25k?

I will be back to India by 2nd week of October.

Import of foreign exchange/currency:
9.1 Any person can bring into India foreign exchange without any limit. However,
declaration of foreign exchange/currency is required to be made in the prescribed
Currency Declaration Form in the following cases:
(a) Where the value of foreign currency notes exceeds US$ 5000/- or
equivalent; and
(b) Where the aggregate value of foreign exchange (in the form of
currency notes, bank notes, traveler cheques etc.) exceeds
US$10,000/- or its equivalent.

3.4 The bonafide baggage items that are in excess of the duty free allowance can be cleared on payment of a uniform rate of Customs duty that is currently @35%+ Cess, as applicable, except for items like liquor, cigarette etc. that are charged to a higher rate of duty as applicable to imports other than as baggage.

This is however if you declare.
Normally if have 1 or 2 baggage they don't bother, unless you returning via Dubai.

All I was asked by policeman was "Kiti bottle analas" meaning How many bottle of liquor did you bring.[cheers]. He was disappointed when I said "NONE".

I was returning from Heathrow via Dubai. On other instance when it was direct flight form Heathrow, passengers were directly asked to move out without baggages being scanned at exit

Buying from Amazon ( query on custom duty )

My birthday is near and i wanted to buy a watch. my friend suggested a brand and i checked their official site. but unfortunately they don't ship any products to india.

so i checked amazon.com

i found the watch , checked the shipping charges and total came to be this.

i was happy that i saved a lot since the same brand cost 3 times here in india.

then it hit me that i have to pay custom duty as well

so here are the problems

1. how much duty will be levied on a wrist watch. i googled and some site says 10% and others 28.85%. [confused]

2. i read somewhere that amazon itself charges the duty and add the duty amount at the checkout. is this true ?

3. i'm guessing i have to pay the custom duty on the delivery , so what will be the total amount of the duty i have to pay ?
