A quote from Mr. Vipin Sondhi, Managing Director & CEO, Ashok Leyland Limited, on support required for truckers.

“Logistics and transportation are the backbone of the economy, and in these challenging times, vehicles need to be running to transport essentials. The truckers ensure that the supply chain of these essential supplies are not disrupted, and the communities affected by the lockdown are cared for. We, in turn, need to care for these truckers and some measures which the Government could take to assist these drivers are - to provide minimum wages to the drivers and ensure their benefits are looked after; provide insurance for the drivers and ensure their health and safety is cared for; regulate and mandate the working conditions for these truck drivers – through cabin regulation. Also for the drivers who are transporting essentials across the country, assistance needs to be provided in the form of food, water, essentials, and service support at pit-stops along the highways. We at Ashok Leyland have already started initiatives on this front and look forward to partner with the Government for any new initiatives on these lines.”

A quote from Mr. Vipin Sondhi, Managing Director & CEO, Ashok Leyland Limited, on Scrappage Policy.

“Commercial Vehicle sector, which was already struggling prior to the pandemic has now come to a grinding halt. As is well known, commercial vehicles are a life line to any nation’s economy. They transport goods and they are an integral part of public transport. It is imperative that demand for commercial vehicles be triggered. An incentive based Scrappage scheme (for Commercial vehicles >15 years) with incentives in the form of a rebate in GST, road tax or registration charges would help give demand a boost.”

Quote from Mr. Vipin Sondhi, Managing Director & CEO, Ashok Leyland Limited, on Supply Chain and Production Commencement.

“Auto OEM’s are dependent on the ancillary sector. A smooth flow of the complete supply-chain is vital for production of vehicles. While the Government has given the auto sector the permission to resume operations in a phased manner in certain geographies, with certain norms and conditions, it still remains a challenge for the industry to resume operations. This because, while the OEM production unit might be in the green zone, even if one ancillary unit that supplies a small part happens to be in the red zone, will make a component of the vehicle unavailable, thereby making the production process impossible. The need of the hour is for the industry to collaborate together with the local agencies to ensure a smooth supply chain, for the OEMs to commence production and help boost the economic revival of the nation.”

A quote from Mr. Vipin Sondhi, CEO & MD, Ashok Leyland regarding the April sales numbers.

“These are truly unprecedented times, and both Government and Industry need to work even more closely, across the supply chain to bring the industry back on its feet. The recovery of the auto industry is vital for the revival of the overall economy. For the first time ever in the history of the Automotive industry in India, we have seen a ‘zero sale’ month, in April 2020.”

BharatBenz Launches 5228TT- Tractor Trailer In India

After showcasing the model earlier this year, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has introduced its next-generation BharatBenz 5228TT heavy-duty tractor-trailer in the country. The new 5228TT comes with the highest GCW available on a 4x2 tractor up to 54 tonnes. Daimler India says that the new model offers a lower cost of ownership compared to its predecessor, courtesy of the new axle configuration. The new set-up uses a hub reduction axle and sturdier frame that allows the tractor-trailer to offer a load-bearing capacity of a larger 6x4 tractor, while offering higher fuel efficiency. The 5228TT was one of the showstoppers for BharatBenz as part of its new BS6 compliant commercial vehicle range showcased earlier this year.

The BharatBenz 5228TT is offered in a variety of GCW options ranging from 51 tonne to 54 tonne, and gets an air suspension as optional that is used for long haul applications. The vehicle has four less tyres than its 55-tonne counterpart and the fuel efficiency is on par with a 6x4 tractor, according to the company. The 5228TT can carry five to eight tonnes more based on the trailer combination compared to a conventional 4x2 tractor.

New commercial vehicles in India likely to have increased length, height as international trucks: Here’s why

Tata-trucks-buses1-660.jpg

The Government of India, amid this pandemic situation, is equally concentrating on improving the economic situation of the country. For example, the dimensions of buses, trailers as well as good carriers will now be increased. This is based on the international dimensions of such vehicles, which were found to be much bigger than ours. Related to this, amendments are proposed for rule-93 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1989. The overall idea behind this amendment is to allow more passengers or goods to be carried in the same specified weight category. This in turn will improve logistics in a big fashion. According to the amendment proposed, a two-wheeler can have a max length of four metres while the height can be 2.5 metres. Three-wheelers, according to the proposed amendment, can have a max height of 2.5 metres. The length of a pneumatic trailer now will be at par with that of a modular hydraulic unit.

On select routes (most likely highways), road trains with the same length as in European countries (25.2 metres), will be introduced. To encourage container transport, the height of goods vehicles too will be modified in the N category. Two-axle buses will now likely have a length of 13.5 metres from the current 12 metres. As for truck-trailers that carry passenger cars or motorcycles, construction equipment or even livestock, the height of the vehicle shouldn’t go above 4.75 metre. Semi-trailers that carry refrigerated containers should not have a height more than 4.25 metre.
