The decision to abandon the traditional C-segment hatchback bodystyle and go for something bolder is Citroen’s way of trying to carve out a niche in a highly competitive market. The previous C4, a conservative hatch, was removed from sale back in 2017 as the brand began to reinvent itself.

The all-new C4, due to be revealed in June, has been spotted testing, and our exclusive images preview how it could look. The crossover will also kickstart a new design language for the French firm.

“Customers want a design renewal and it’s a great way for us to show our creativity,” Laurence Hansen, Citroen Product and strategy director, added. “We have a strong legacy in this segment and we know what we need to do and to avoid. The car we have designed is the best of different worlds. It will have a strong personality and the new lighting signature from the 19_19 concept.”

The basic architecture can be found on the latest Peugeot 2008, which uses a 50kWh battery to deliver a real-world range of around 190 miles. The platform also supports a 1.5-litre diesel engine plus a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo. Both are expected to be offered in the new C4.

New 2020 Citroen C4 to be revealed later this month

Citroen has confirmed the reinvented C4 will make its official debut 30th June. The bold new crossover is expected to reach the UK market between late 2020 and early 2021 and, when it goes on sale, it’ll act as a taller riding alternative to the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus.

Citroen announced the new C4’s launch date on Twitter – and it was accompanied by a short video which teased the car’s badging. The vehicle in the clip wears an “ë-C4” moniker, which will be the nameplate used on the all-electric variant. Petrol and diesel-powered cars are expected to retain the previous model’s C4 badge.

The decision to abandon the traditional C-segment bodystyle in favour of something bolder and more SUV inspired is Citroen’s way of trying to carve out a niche in a highly competitive market. The previous C4, which was a fairly conservative hatchback, was removed from sale in 2017 as the brand began to reinvent its image.

As shown by our exclusive images, the next-generation C4 will be a staunch departure from the previous model, ushering in a new design language for the French firm. Laurence Hansen, Citroen Product and Strategy director, said: “Customers want a design renewal and it’s a great way for us to show our creativity.

2021 Citroen C4 revealed, electric e-C4 included

yqvlar5w1o1zwcgqguqb.jpg

The new 2021 Citroen C4 has now properly stepped over into SUV territory, leaving behind two generations of the badge's history as a conventional hatch offering.

In its new third-generation form, the C4 takes the place of the high-riding DS4 that no longer exists as a direct member of the Citroen brand line, along with the C4 Cactus – which is not expected to be resurrected.

Interestingly, Citroen officially calls the new C4 a hatchback, but its taller-than-usual suspension setup and black cladding would see it described as a crossover or small SUV in any other line-up. (We'll have to see how it's classified in VFACTS when, or if, it comes to Australia.)

Full details on the new model will come later this month, but for now Citroen has released a handful of images for the new petrol and diesel C4, and its electric e-C4 sibling.

Citroen says the new C4 "plays with several design codes", marking the beginning of a new era in the brand's styling direction.

Inside, the C4 keeps things simple with a fairly conventional dash design, topped by a large and heavily angled display.

2021 Citroen C4 launched with petrol, diesel, and electric options

The new generation 2021 Citroen C4 has been launched globally, with an electric powertrain at the forefront of the car maker’s expansion plans – however its Australian plans are yet to be confirmed.

The fully-electric version, called the Citroen e-C4, uses a 50kWh battery powering a 100kW/260Nm electric motor, and has a claimed range of 350 kilometres on the new real-world (WLTP) test cycle.

According to Citroen, the e-C4 can be recharged to 80 per cent capacity within 30 minutes using a 100kW fast charger.

Petrol options come from a turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, offering outputs of 74kW, 96kW, and 114kW.

Two diesel options are also available from a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder, producing 82kW and 96kW.

All engines are Euro 6 compliant, and a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission will be available.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available via the 10-inch infotainment screen, but heating and air conditioning controls are still accessed using traditional knobs and buttons. A high-definition camera is built into the rear-view camera and can take photos onto a memory card.
