17,500 cars worth Rs 1,000 crores drown in Kerala floods – Could be auctioned
In what has been a tragic loss of life, livelihood and trade, it’s now that estimates of loss are trickling in. About 17,500 cars across Kerala are estimated to have been impacted across 350 dealerships. These are old car dealerships as well as new car dealerships.
And that’s just cars in showrooms and dealers stockyards. Insurance claims have now started pouring in for private vehicles that were submerged in flood water which rose 6-8 feet in certain parts.
Current estimates point to a washout of a possible inventory of a whopping Rs 1,000 crore in stock as most dealerships shut shop for a period of 1 week or more. In the heaviest downpour in a century, the coastal state has been left ravaged and maximising relief efforts. In its aftermath, the raging waters have left at least 445 dead, and thousands at rescue centres.
For the South of India region, Kerala is the largest of 6 markets, and accounts for about 27 percent in sales at a sales volume of 245,000 in a quarter. As in the case of recent Chennai floods in 2015, the episode demonstrated a course of progression for affected cars. There’s rather little scope of doing much with cars that are submerged in flood water for long periods of time. Some are salvaged in part through lot auctions, and most reduced to scrap to be auctioned.
Burden of loss impacts dealers greatly as inventory in stockyards is fully paid for to manufacturers. Given the gravity of the situation, manufacturers may work out plans to help dealers get by, restock, and start business gain having borne huge losses through a compensation plan.
Across vehicles segments – Trucks, buses, motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, tractors, and others, losses are compounded and enormous. Kerala is home to about 700 dealers representing auto brands.
In fact with Onam being a great festival period for dealers to do brisk business, dealerships had stocked well to meet anticipated demand. It is in fact, one of the highest selling periods n Kerala. Onam was celebrated on 26th August this year.

Dealers gear up to handle cars damaged in flood
Automobile dealerships and workshops are gearing up to handle the barrage of cars that were partially or fully submerged in the unprecedented floods that ravaged Aluva, Paravur, Muvattupuzha and other suburban towns of Kochi.
Most of them are facing shortage of space to accommodate the cars, while some are in the process of readying skilled technicians to evaluate the damage, coordinate with insurance surveyors and undo the damage caused by floodwaters and slush.
The manager of a Hyundai dealership in the city said over 50 cars and SUVs had reported damage caused by floodwaters. “We have categorised them into three categories — those which faced water level up to the running board, to below the dashboard level and above the dashboard level. The first two categories are repairable, while those in the third category are treated as those that incurred ‘total loss’.”
Their insurance documents are being processed. Owners who opted for bumper-to-bumper cover stand to get almost the full amount needed for repairs. Those who opted for basic comprehensive coverage would have to pay a little more, he said.
An official at a Maruti Suzuki dealership said there was shortage of skilled technicians to tend to the whopping number of cars affected by flooding. “Many owners are still in relief camps, since their houses have not been cleaned up. The damage to cars brought to our workshop is being assessed.”
A official of a luxury car dealership said it expected to get up to 20 cars that suffered damage. “We are finding it tough to get vehicles to tow them to our workshop. Many owners want to be doubly sure that their cars stuck in low-lying waters are safe and have brought them here. We have devised an action plan with the help of our India head office to repair them at the earliest,” she said.
Consequential damage
“A total of 62 cars have been reported at our workshop following the floods and more owners are calling,” said Rajwanth Ben, director of a dealership for Tata cars. “The insurance assessment based on the floodwater mark is being done. Owners are unlikely to get claim for engine damage if they started or operated the car through high floodwaters since this would damage the engine, through ‘consequential damage’. But those who have included engine protection in the insurance cover can get compensation even if there is consequential damage to the engine,” he said.
Modern cars rely heavily on electrical and electronic components which have to be replaced in case of water incursion. Similarly, components such as antilock-braking system (ABS), air bags, etc., have sensors which suffer damage in case they are submerged for long duration. The engine oil and filters of cars caught in floodwaters must be changed, said Mr. Ben.

Flooded cars come cheap, and you can try your luck
A few hundred brand new cars and SUVs that were partially or fully submerged in the low-lying stock yards of automobile dealerships across Kerala in the recent floods will shortly be up for sale at heavy discounts, or sold as scrap.
This brings back memories of 2013 when 250 SUVs of an automobile brand parked in its stockyard in the immediate suburbs of Ernakulam were inundated, many of them up to the roof.
“Most of these vehicles were sold at 50% discount after they were cleaned and repaired, to a dealer outside Kerala. The ones that suffered minor damage were sold with warranty cover, while vehicles that incurred more damage were sold sans warranty,” sources in the dealership said.

New Mahindra Marazzo gifted to fisherman for helping people during Kerala floods
The state of Kerala battled with the worst ever flood situation the state has seen in over 100 years. Lakhs of people were displaced, thousands of crores were damaged in property and many lost their lives.
But in spite of such tough situations, there were individuals who made it a point to go out there and help people who were stuck in flood. One such individual is a local fisherman, Mr Jaisal. For his heroic efforts during the Kerala floods, Mahindra and its dealer in Calicut, Eram Motors has gifted Mr Jaisal a brand new Marazzo MPV.
The new Mahindra Marazzo was handed over to Mr Jaisal at the Eram Motors dealership in Calicut by Kerala Minister for labour T P Ramakrishnan in the presence of Eram Group Chairman and MD Siddeek Ahmed.
Mr Jaisal is no less than a celebrity now because of a video which went viral last month. This video showed Mr Jaisal lie down in flooded water, with face down. He did this so as to help old women, and children to get on rescue boats by letting them climb on his back and walk over to the boats. This became a big news, not only in Kerala, but all over the globe. You can watch the his heroic video below.

Local media reports that Mr Jaisal is an extremely poor guy who is living in a tiny hut. He is part of a group of individuals that has been helping people for years, wherever there is an accident on road or some kind of rescue help is needed.
When asked how does he feel after being felicitated and gifted a brand new Mahindra Marazzo, Mr Jaisal said that he is very happy with the gift and he plans on using this car to continue rescuing people. Despite being extremely poor he has always spent on helping people in crisis like accident or calamities.
