  • This will be the first fully electric vehicle from GM's high-end automobile brand.
  • The vehicle will be the first to launch with GM’s Ultium battery architecture.
In a teaser video, Cadillac has revealed that it will unveil the upcoming Lyric electric luxury SUV on August 6 at 7 p.m. ET. The vehicle will be the first from parent company GM to use the automaker’s new Ultium battery technology.

Cadillac states that in addition to seeing the show vehicle, the automaker will also share "the next chapter for the brand." It will likely be about the move to electric vehicles and possibly include information about upcoming versions of the company’s hands-free driver assistance feature, Super Cruise.

Currently, details about the vehicle are sparse, but we do know that the Lyriq will use GM's Ultium battery architecture. The scalable system will ofter capacities from 50.0 kWh to an enormous 200.0 kWh. It's likely that the Lyriq's battery pack will fall somewhere near 100.0 kWh.

Cadillac reveals massive digital display in its upcoming electric SUV

mkufryjayhah9ibmrypj.jpg

General Motors has shared the first photo from inside the upcoming Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV, revealing a whopping 33-inch, or 83cm, digital dashboard display.

The display consists of a single piece of curved glass which is five inches (12.7cm) tall and divided into three key zones – although it can be transformed into one single, uninterrupted display when the vehicle is stopped.

GM has described the display as "industry-leading" due to its sheer size, plus the fact it's made from a single pane of glass, rather than several distinct panels.

Comparatively, the Tesla Model 3 features a 15-inch (38cm) digital display, while the recently unveiled Nissan Ariya features a 12.3-inch central screen and a 12.3-inch digital instruments cluster, or a combined 24.6 inches (62.5cm) of digital display.

"The size of the Cadillac Lyriq display is a huge differentiator for us," Bill Thompson, senior design manager for UI at General Motors, told Electrek, which exclusively published the first-look image.

"The form factor is going to be very industry-leading. The huge 33-inch display is a very big differentiator for us, even among the other brands in our portfolio. All this information and all this intelligence will get passed down to the rest of the company. It’s the platform itself that is all new."

The 83cm display is actually an upgrade on the one previewed in the 2021 Cadillac Escalade.

While the new Escalade's digital display was said to measure 38 inches (96.5cm), that's a total figure taking into account two separate screen panels with three distinct OLED displays, whereas the Lyriq's is a single, continuous piece of glass.

Cadillac Shares Teaser Images of Lyriq EV Ahead of August 6 Debut

cadillac-lyriq-chargeport-1596132243.jpg

  • Cadillac shared images of the 2022 Lyriq ahead of its debut on August 6.
  • The images show off a light-up logo and a rather large charging port panel.
  • The Lyriq will be the first GM electric vehicle to use the company's new Ultium battery packs.
Cadillac’s first EV is a week away from being unveiled and the automaker dropped a few images of the upcoming vehicle that show off the vehicle's charging port. We can also see the large panel that opens for access to the port, and a light-up Cadillac logo. The crossover will be the first from GM to use the company's Ultium battery packs that will permeate the company’s lineup of electric vehicles.

In the photos and very short video teaser, we get a glimpse of the 2022 Lyriq’s driver’s-side fender and door and the rather large charging port panel. It seems that Cadillac has come up with a system that moves the rear portion of the front fender to reveal the port and a Tron-esque lighting graphic that presumably shows the power being directed to the battery pack at the base of the vehicle.

Cadillac also showed off how the brand’s crest badge is part of the vehicle’s startup sequence. Turn on the Lyriq and those outside the car get a little Cadillac rave. Finally, the images show what appear to be large multi-spoke wheels. The design is striking, while the aerodynamic design could potentially help to boost the EVs range estimate.

The Cadillac Lyric will be unveiled on August 6 starting at 7 p.m. Eastern time.

2023 Cadillac Lyriq Unveiled as 'Show Car,' to Have 300+-Mile Range

2023-cadillac-lyriq-101-1596744486.jpg?crop=1.00xw:0.754xh;0,0.jpg

  • Cadillac unveiled the 2023 Lyriq "show car" today, saying the production electric SUV will go into production in late 2022.
  • The Lyriq is the first GM vehicle to use the automaker's Ultium battery technology.
  • The vehicle we're seeing today is 80 to 85 percent design complete, meaning there will be some changes before it goes into production.
Cadillac wants you to know that the Lyriq may just be a "show car" at this stage, but it is the beginning of something big—not just for Cadillac but for the entire GM family. It'll be the first all-electric Caddy and also the first vehicle to be built on GM's new modular EV platform and use its Ultium battery technology. It also won't go into production until late 2022. As GM has made clear, the company plans on introducing 20 EVs by 2023.

The Lyriq might not be on the road as soon as we hoped, but its dynamic styling and vertical headlamps do give us something to look forward to in the next chapter for Cadillac and GM as a whole. “It's a cornerstone [that] we're going to build our future on, that we're going to build the brand on,” said Steve Carlisle, president of GM North America.

The Lyriq's styling lines up with the renders we've seen from Cadillac. "The Lyriq represents the next iteration of the iconic brand's styling, enabled by electrification, as only Cadillac can express," said Andrew Smith, head of Cadillac global design. The front end, while distinct with its vertical LED headlamps, bold grille lines, and illuminated logo, still conveys the Cadillac design language that's been cultivated over the past few generations of vehicles.

A low, sloping roofline gives the crossover a sporty exterior while serving to reduce the drag that can be murder on EV range. The rear lights are more dynamic than what we've seen from the automaker, with sharp angles on lights that follow and wrap around the lines of the vehicle.

Inside, besides the gigantic 33-inch LCD display (which Cadillac says can display more than a billion colors) that the automaker showed off in July, the Lyriq's interior is more minimalistic than those seen in Cadillac's gasoline-powered vehicles. Smith wanted to convey a sense of sophistication that's clean and simple. The automaker even updated the rotary controller in the center console so that it appeared to be something built by a watchmaker.

While driving, the latest version of Super Cruise (GM's hands-free driver-assistance system) will be available when the vehicle launches, as will a head-up display with augmented-reality enhancements for navigation and alerts.

The All-Important Range Number
But for many, an EV is only as good as how many miles it can cover before its battery is depleted. Cadillac says it's targeting a range of more than 300 miles for the electric crossover from a battery pack with an approximate capacity of 100.0 kWh. The current electric-SUV champ is the Tesla Model X Long Range Plus version, which has an EPA range of 351 miles.

To keep the Lyriq charged, Cadillac says, the vehicle will support DC fast charging higher than 150 kW but didn't elaborate on its maximum DC charge rate. For those with the capability at home, the vehicle supports Level 2 charging up to 19 kW.

The Lyriq will be available in both a rear-wheel-drive version and as what Cadillac calls a "performance oriented" all-wheel-drive variant. Cadillac states that the AWD Lyriq will have a nearly 50/50 weight distribution and a center of gravity approximately four inches lower than the XT4. The automaker is promising an EV that is "sporty, responsive, and allows for spirited driving."

As with most show cars, the Lyriq's design will change between today's unveiling and when it goes into production sometime in late 2022. As for why its production date is two years away still, "It's about a lot more than the product—it begins there, of course, which is where we are beginning," Carlisle said. "We anticipate a range of conditions necessary to promote the adoption of EVs, including preparing our dealer network, expanding the charging infrastructure, and growing customer acceptance. We're not going for a sugar high."
