Hi,
I am planning to buy my first diesel car. I'm looking for a car with good performance, looks, quality and low maintenance. I'm willing to spend up to 6.5ls and have Polo and Swift in mind. I love Polo, but i heard that its under-powered. Swift is powerful but it has poor quality interiors. Are there any new upcoming cars? I'm willing to wait.

I cannot agree to saying poor quality interiors in new swift. hope you did not mean Toyota Liva..

In long run Swift is overall better package than polo.

Major concern with Volkswagen polo would be:

high to very high maintenance costs

thin and questionable service network

not so refined diesel engine as that of swift comparatively

lesser fuel economy comparatively to swift.

No or lack of aftermarket spare parts

low resale value.

and definitely polo is not so rev friendly as swift.

Buddy, The swift is far better than polo.
The swift has-
A decent VFM package.
Wide Dealership network.
Powerful engine.
Fuel Efficiend.
Maruti!
Low maintenance.
So, SWIFT IS THE BEST FOR YOU. Have you seen new swift from inside. I feel it very better and interior quality is improved than the old swift also.

Maybe you can consider the i20 Magna. What say?

I suggest, go and have a test drive all the vehicles you can buy in your budget and see which one is ringing the bell for you. On paper you may or may not like some of the cars but are they practical in flesh or not ! Once you test drive, share your experience here. I am sure then you and others will be able to help you out in this.

Please be informed that there is no car as "perfect car". So you have to decide your level of compromise.

All the best.

Agree with all the points above, if you are very much concerned about the Brand image and need the car without waiting for months together(Read swift) Then Polo holds good.

If you are comparing swift with polo in interiors then polo wins but the engine refinement is in the swift not in the polo. Moreover the interior quality of swift is not that poor, it's better than the older generation.

Do consider Punto, figo and all they have also emerged as a strong opponents in the premium diesel hatch markets.

And i think you are aware of the new i20 which is going to be released soon:

I already own a petrol I20. So not planning to pick up another one. I'm not into Figo that much. Punto is a very nice car. But,since Fiat services are not that great in our country(thats what i heard), i'm dropped it.
When is Hyundai planning to launch the new I20? By the way, i also heard that VW is planning to launch Polo 1.5 TDi? When are they planning to do that?

It's coming soon maybe this month or by next, it was scheduled to launch by Feb '12. Think they might release after the budget stuff gets over.

You can find the discussion going on here:

Did you consider the Micra or the pulse? Strong diesel engine, quite good features & unique looks...

+99 to Nithin. Yes buddy, Fiat ass is better than VWs, I believe.
Go for Punto. It is in between Swift and Polo. In ASS, its better than Polo. In looks and Power, Handling, It is better than Swift.

I agree that A.S.S. of FIAT is better than Punto, provided you contact FIAT.

Anyways, you mind a Petrol? Why not a Polo 1.6? costs 7.5 Lacs though.

Else in 6.5 Lacs, Swift is a better bet than Polo.

In diesels, there are no cars which will suit your performance needs, within 6.5 Lacs.

If I was in your place, I would save some more & buy a Linea T-Jet, if I can afford petrol.

@Raj, I think it is a typo. It should be VW instead of Punto.

And, He has given a budget of 6.5 L. So, In this budget, I think punto will be the best bet as swift lacks rear seat space and boot space.

Not buying petrol car as i already have one and ofc, filling the tank is more expensive.
If i install a tuning box, will i have to remove it every time i give the car for service?
