Till now we have only witnessed cars from BMW in India. But it wont be long now before you get a chance to lay your hands on a BMW motorcycle.
The company has some solid plans to explore the Indian two wheeler market and the bikes will be targeted at the premium segment. This would not be the first attempt of the company to enter the Indian market. Their first attempt happened about 13 years ago in collaboration with the Hero group.

This time the company will be all alone which I think would be good for the motorcycle industry. BMW has been expanding its presence across many cities in India and it might use the dealership network selling cars to sell bikes too.The company is studying the Indian market right now and is expected to make an official announcement soon. I hope that the BMW bikes are assembled locally so that they com. BMW’s Motorrad range consists of around 15 motorcycles classified under High Performance, Enduro, Tour, Urban and Sport. It isn’t clear what BMW plans to sell in India, but all we want to say is bring it on!

No its not going to be the first time that they are launching a bike. They did have a bike in the Indian market before, it was the BMW F-650 and this was even before they officially started selling cars in India.

These are some of the images of the BMW F650 which was available in India. The first image is somewhere from the South of India and that bike has Hero Honda mirrors. I remember seeing one in Cochin long back. I loved that bike, but the price was way too much for me to even dream of it. Even the price differences were so much. Mumbai on road price was 5,35,000/- and in Delhi it was 4,65,000. It was a very good machine. For instance the first service was at 10,000kms. Talk about quality of craftsmanship.

Looking good but those steel spokes are spoiling the looks IMO. Now the stylish alloys and the wider tyres are making the bike look attractive!

Service at 10k kms is amazing![clap]

Think of it . It was 1996. And an enduro bike seldom wears alloys. Spokes are much more flexible and Wont break off-road.

Ditto that. Off road bikes never use alloys. Alloys can crack when you do a hard landing after getting airborne.
I myself manged to crack the rear hub of my Shogun in the 96 Popular Rally. Just imagine the torture that the wheels undergo, Its extreme and spoke wheels can take a lot of beating before giving in. Spoke wheels absorb a lot of the impact and might bend but it wont make the bike totally immobilized.

And Dhaya, both the bikes are very different, As Racerdabba has already said the first one is a Supersport and the F 650 is an Enduro or on-off road bike.
The F 650 is a very good bike for long hauls, you can ride all day and you wont feel tired. They are the kind of bikes that do round the world expeditions.

Wow. BMW bikes are definitely coming in this december..confirmed [clap]

BMW Motorrad starts its sales activities on the Indian motorcycle market with two official importers as of December 2010. With “Deutsche Motoren” in Delhi in the north of India and “Navnit Motors” in Mumbai on the west coast and Bangalore in the southern part of the country, BMW Motorrad is relying on two experienced BMW Group partners. With these three sales outlets the German motorcycle manufacturer is represented in the strategically important regions. Hendrik von Kuenheim, General Director BMW Motorrad: “The BMW Group has already established itself very successfully in India with a local BMW automobile production and a sales network for BMW Group automobiles. Now the market for premium motorcycles is beginning to develop, too. The sales activities now commencing with our two experienced BMW Group partners are of long-term significance to BMW Motorrad. We are confident our motorcycles will swiftly become established in timely preparation for the growing market.” As the most innovative manufacturer of large-volume premium motorcycles in the segments enduro, touring, sports touring and sports, BMW Motorrad is opening a new chapter in its successful market strategy by starting sales activities in India. The motorcycles will be produced at the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin and supplied to India as CBU (completely built up) units. BMW Motorrad will initially offer the current models of the R and K series as well as the superbike S 1000 RR, i.e. premium vehicles in each of the relevant categories. The BMW motorcycles of the R series such as the legendary enduro bike BMW R 1200 GS enthuse customers with their unique and distinctive boxer engine in particular. The BMW K models are regarded as the benchmark in the segment of large-volume 4-cylinder motorcycles due to their technological innovations and superior engine output. Both series also offer the very finest quality in chassis technology and an exemplary standard of safety with the BMW Motorrad ABS. The S 1000 RR, BMWs first superbike, became the most admired sports bike of its class in the motorcycle season 2010.

BMW should come in India with 300-500cc category as India have no wider roads to ride. The indian market is stuck with 150cc as the company is satisfied and they are in no need of greater technology.

Husqvarna Coming to India

BMW Motorrad will bring their Husqvarna brand to India through its current two-dealer, three-outlet setup. BMW Motorrad officials spoke to OVERDRIVE about their Indian plans and explained that BMW Motorrad is relying on two experienced BMW Group partners. With this dealer structure they say they are well prepared to run the operational business as well as develop continuously the market for their products.

BMW sells motorcycles in India through three dealers - in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. For the moment, the company does not plan to expand their network. They say this is because the premium motorcycle market is still quite small and is only beginning to develop. It has been, says BMW Motorrad, a strategic decision to enter the market and now be prepared for the expected future growth. BMW, so far, appears to have no plans to either expand their distribution network in India or indeed, as speculated, setup an Indian assembly plant for Husqvarna to bring in more affordable CKD or SKD products.

BMW to Partner with TVS

BMW Motorrad have adopted a slow but steady approach to the Indian two-wheeler market, gradually making inroads with consistent sales of their high-end, large capacity motorcycles through a set of trustworthy Indian importers. This German giant remains amongst the last of the ‘big-ticket’ manufacturers to dive into the high volumes Indian market with an earnest game plan, with KTM, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Triumph, MV Agusta and every major Japanese bike maker having all played their cards in our key market, most with grand success stories already sewn-up, or in the making.

It’s an alliance with all the ingredients for grand success, there being no better partner for BMW Motorrad in India than the Hosur based TVS Motor Co., so in what signals exciting times ahead, Indian two-wheeler industry veteran, Cecil Dewars, senior vice president, corporate communications for TVS has confirmed that discussions are currently underway between his company and BMW Motorrad.

It’s still early days, but the sky’s the limit for what can come from this solid a joint venture. On one hand, BMW’s motorcycles—including Husqvarna off-road bikes—are renowned world over for their high quality, built to last a generation reliability and ample performance, while closer to home, anyone who has followed TVS will vouch for their meticulous production practices, rock solid in-house R&D capability, keen understanding of the Indian small capacity two-wheeler market and unparalleled on-and-off road racing expertise within India. TVS know what it takes to tap into the 100-200cc small capacity two-wheeler arena in India, with successful brands like the Scooty, Star and Apache to their credit, while BMW are masters of technology for every perceivable top-end motorcycle including their rugged GS, famous K and supersports S series superbikes. Such a tie-up will fill in the blanks for both manufacturers, while unlocking new market horizons at the same time.

TVS has come in for considerable flack, being seen as overly cautious in recent times, and such a bold move would serve to silence the critics, making it worth the wait before we get to see something spectacular.
