2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible spies.jpg

BMW’s forthcoming 4 Series Convertible has been spied again, this time during handling assessment at the Nurburgring. The German brand’s latest rival for the Mercedes C-Class Cabriolet and Audi A5 Cabriolet will make its debut early next year, sporting a controversial new front grille design and a choice of BMW’s most potent powertrains.

Like the recently launched BMW Z4, the new 4 Series Convertible will ditch its folding metal hardtop in favour of a fabric roof, in an effort to lower the car’s kerb weight. The decision will also help lower emissions and improve fuel economy, while reducing the amount of space the roof occupies when it’s folded into the boot.

From behind the disguise the latest spy shots show us that, like the 4 Series Coupe, the Convertible will use BMW’s latest interpretation of its kidney grille design; oversized twin elements will extend all the way from the leading edge of the bonnet to the base of the bumper. The fabric roof is shorter than the more gently sloping roof on its coupe counterpart, which means that the drop top has a longer, flatter rear deck.

The interior will be carried over from the 3 Series saloon, albeit with a few changes to accomodate the car’s lack of a solid B-pillar. The seats will have their inertia reel units built into the back rests, while the rear middle seat will be replaced with a storage bin. However, BMW’s latest 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster will be transferred wholesale, alongside a 10.2-inch iDrive infotainment system with sat-nav, real-time traffic info and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

New 2020 BMW 4 Series arrives with bold new look and a huge grille

BMW 4 Series 2020.jpg

Few big car makers have as much history and presence in the coupé market as BMW. And here is the brand’s latest offering: the new 4 Series, which aims to finish a job started by its predecessor.

BMW 4 Series 2020-2.jpg

That’s because, while the BMW 4 Series is still a rival for cars such as the Mercedes C-Class Coupé and Audi A5, BMW has started to dramatically change the way the car looks.

BMW 4 Series 2020-3.jpg

The last 4 Series saw BMW separate the coupé and the 3 Series it was based on. What was once the 3 Series Coupé became the 4 Series, although outsiders saw it as little more than a new name. The latest two-door, with a very different image to the saloon, has clearly been designed as its own model.

BMW 4 Series 2020-4.jpg

It shares its platform with the 3 Series, but there are several revisions intended to make the 4 Series feel sportier, such as a wider rear track and standard M Sport suspension. Yet the big talking point is the styling, which Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design, says is a nod to the firm’s heritage.

At launch, every version of the 4 Series comes in M Sport trim, with lots of high-gloss black trim pieces and lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels. Various customisation packages are offered, from a carbon-fibre detailing pack, to M Performance parts and the availability of an M Sport Pro Edition trim. This adds 19-inch wheels as standard, plus more gloss black detailing and some unique interior trim choices, as well as three exclusive paint finishes on the options list.

New 2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible unveiled

New BMW 4 Series Convertible 2020.jpg

The wraps have finally come off the second-generation BMW 4 Series Convertible. It’s available to order now, priced from £45,785 – and, when the first examples hit the UK next March, it’ll offer fresh competition for the Mercedes C-Class Cabriolet and Audi A5 Cabriolet.

The 4 Series Convertible’s styling is pretty much identical to the Coupe’s – save for a new chrome mesh radiator grille and the missing roof. However, for this second-generation model, BMW has tried something different, ditching the old car’s folding metal hardtop for a new fabric roof.

BMW says the new roof is 40 per cent lighter than the outgoing model’s tin-top – and that there’s little appreciable difference in the amount of acoustic or thermal insulation. The roof can also be operated at speeds of up to 31mph, taking 18 seconds to open or close.

The company’s engineers have also tried to retain as much of the coupe’s structural rigidity as possible, adding a bracing shear panel for the front end and stronger side skirts. BMW says that its efforts have made the new 4 Series Convertible around four per cent more rigid than the old model.

New BMW 4 Series Convertible: specs and engines
Unlike the 4 Series Coupe, the Convertible comes as standard in BMW’s M Sport specification, which includes 18-inch alloy wheels, uprated suspension, LED headlights and a more aggressive M-Sport bodykit. The same theme continues inside with an M-Sport steering wheel and a pair of leather-trimmed, M-badged sport seats.

There’s a decent amount of standard technology, too – buyers get three-zone automatic climate control, a reversing camera, electrically adjustable seats, an ambient interior lighting system, 12.3-inch a digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment system. The latter system also now offers support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Above this sits the M Sport Pro Edition. It’s priced from £49,795 and adds a few performance upgrades such as 19-inch alloy wheels and adaptive M-Sport suspension. There’s a couple of cosmetic tweaks as well, including darkened headlamp lenses, tweaked tail lights, M-badged seatbelts and a system that pumps a synthetic engine note into the cabin.

At the top of the 4 Series Convertible line-up sits the M440i. It has a starting price of £58,865 – and it’s powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine, which develops 369bhp and 500Nm of torque. The powertrain is supported by a 48-volt starter-generator, which feeds the car’s electrical system and delivers an extra 11bhp when overtaking.

The engine sends drive to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox – and BMW says the M440i will cover the 0–62mph sprint in 4.9 seconds before running into its limiter at a top speed of 155mph. There’s a suite of chassis tweaks to control the extra power, too, such as a locking rear differential, M Sport brakes and adaptive dampers.

The rest of the 4 Series Convertible engine range consists of two petrols and three diesel units. Entry-level 420i models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which develops 182bhp and 300Nm of torque. The 430i uses the same powertrain, albeit with a remap which increases its output to 254bhp and 400Nm of torque.
