Bentley Bentayga Facelift (2020) Spied Ahead Of Summer Debut

Bentley has been spied testing a new Bentayga SUV, with the brand’s best selling model set to receive a facelift later this year.

The updates are expected to bring the SUV’s styling up to date with the latest Continental GT and Flying Spur, and it’s likely to go on sale in the UK this autumn, with prices starting from around £140,000.

As this prototype and previous mules have hinted at, changes will include a new front bumper with a reworked skid plate, a new, larger mesh radiator grille and new tailgate with new tail lights too.

Bentley will also fit new LED headlamp units and larger daytime running lights, which are similar in design to those found on the facelifted Flying Spur. The revised lights will be mounted in a pair of reprofiled front wings, slightly broader than before to give the Bentayga a flatter face.

Inside, we expect the updated Bentayga will adopt the same three-sided rotating dashboard panel as the Continental GT and Flying Spur, which gives the driver the option of displaying a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a simple veneer panel or a collection of three analogue gauges which show the outside temperature, a chronograph and compass.

2021 Bentley Bentayga Gets Big Style and Content Upgrade

• Since the Bentley Bentayga is faced with an ever growing list of competitors including the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and the Aston Martin DBX, the 2021 model is more than a midterm refresh.
• There are notable changes to rear-seat space and infotainment user-friendliness, along with the more obvious visual improvements.
• At launch later in 2020, only the V-8-powered model will be available, but a plug-in hybrid and a W-12 Speed model are coming later.

The biggest challenge for those on top of the pile is always staying there. Having pioneered what could be termed the ultra-luxury SUV with the launch of the Bentayga in 2015, Bentley has confirmed the popularity of the genre by selling 20,000 around the world since then (these are big numbers in the Bentley universe), with the Bentayga making up nearly half the company's total production last year. But now others are following Bentley's lead, and the Bentayga is suffering tougher competition from the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Lamborghini Urus, and soon-to-launch Aston Martin DBX. Which is why what would normally be a trim-tucking midterm facelift has been turned into a comprehensive visual makeover.

The cabin has also received a subtle makeover, with most of this prioritized around improving usability. The obvious change is the arrival of a larger, higher resolution 10.9-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard, with this working with smarter hardware that now supports wireless Apple CarPlay integration. Other connectivity changes include a new optional touchscreen remote control tablet for rear seat passengers, similar to the one introduced with the Flying Spur, a wireless charging pad, USB-C data ports and an always-on data connection for the car’s various connected applications. Beyond the new screen the only obvious difference is a slight redesign of the central air vent.

Facelifted Bentley Bentayga Speed teased ahead of launch

Bentley has teased the facelifted version of the Bentayga Speed. It’ll be officially unveiled on 12 August, sporting the same range of cosmetic and technology upgrades fitted to the recently revised standard SUV.

Like the standard model, the updated Bentayga Speed will feature an entirely redesigned front end which will bring the SUV’s styling in line with the latest Continental GT and Flying Spur. That means the same broad radiator grille, reshaped LED headlamps, reprofiled front wings and upturned nose as its V8-powered sibling.

However, as this is the flagship Speed model, Bentley will also fit a few extra styling tweaks, such as an aggressive front splitter, deeper side skirts, a high-level tailgate spoiler and a new rear diffuser, which houses a quad-exit exhaust system.

Inside, buyers will likely get some fresh door trims and a pair of updated sport seats, along with a wireless smartphone charging pad, a new 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument binnacle and a remote tablet which allows rear-seat passengers to control the SUV’s various functions.

It’ll be powered by the same twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine as the outgoing model, which should have an identical output of 626bhp and 900Nm of torque. The V8-engined version’s output also remained unchanged, so we don’t expect Bentley will go through the hassle of screwing more power from the W12 model.

As such, the Bentayga Speed’s performance figures should be identical, with a 0–62mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 190mph – meaning it’ll retain its position as the world’s fastest SUV, being 0.5mph faster at the top end than the Lamborghini Urus.
