SOON, AUDI WILL BEGIN ASSEMBLING THE Q3 CROSSOVER IN INDIA

Barely weeks after the commencement of CKD assembly of the top-of-the-line Q7 crossover, German luxury car giant Audi is all set to commence the assembly of the entry level Q3 crossover in India. Audi India operates an assembly unit at Aurangabad, Maharashtra, where four of its car models, the A4, the A6, the Q5 and the Q7 models are assembled from completely knocked down(CKD) kits. CKD assembly has allowed Audi to price these car models competitively as the import duty on CKD cars is much lesser than that on cars brought into the country through the completely built unit(CBU) route.

Audi ups sales target to 8,600 cars

Audi, the German Car maker has revised its target to sell 8,600 cars, up from 8,000 this year and aims to be the no 1 luxury car brand in India by 2015.

Audi has sold 8072 units in India for the 11 months till November, up from 5,117 units it achieved during the same period last year, a report said.

From January, Audi cars will be priced higher by 5% in the country. The company is already making luxury cars in India at its Aurangabad plant.

"In the January-November period we have sold 8,072 units, which is more than our initial target of selling 8,000 cars by the end of this year. We have achieved this a month before the year ends and hence have revised our sales target to minimum 8,600 cars," Audi India Head Michael Perschke was quoted as saying.

By 2015, we aim to be the Number 1 luxury car brand in India, and based on our current performance we are well on track to achieve that objective," Perschke said.

Has Audi India clinched the luxury market crown for 2012?

The sales figures of Audi and BMW have been running neck and neck every month with the Bavarians barely managing to outsell the Ingolstadtians. The competition was hotting up with every passing month.

In the period between January to October 2012, BMW India sold 7,389 cars while Audi India has put 7,267 cars on road, which is just 122 units away from dominance. Mercedes Benz India sold 7,138 cars throughout 2012 which is much lesser than its compatriots.

While Audi India and BMW India are yet to release their total sales figure for the full year, Audi India’s Facebook page has thanked its fans in it its new year greetings for making the brand No.1 in 2012. The greeting reads: “2012 really was the year when we seized the day, 366 times; and raced towards the position of the No. 1 Luxury Car Brand in India.”

Audi India is planning to start off the new year with the launch of the facelifted Q5 sometime in the first quarter. If Audi India has managed to get its hands on the luxury market crown for the year 2012 then the year 2013 would see BMW doing all it can in its capacity to regain the supremacy and Mercedes will also step up its game by launching the A Class and diesel B Class.

Luxury car maker Audi India beats target, posts 63% growth in sales in 2012

German luxury car maker Audi today reported a massive 63 per cent jump in total sales at 9,003 units in 2012 compared to year-ago period on the back of new product roll outs and enhanced dealership network.

The car-maker had sold 5,511 vehicles in 2011, a press release said.

"With an impressive 63 per cent growth in India in 2012, the company has exceeded its annual sales target," Audi India head Michael Perschke said in a release here.

The company has set a target of 8,000 cars for the year 2012, but managed to achieve that target by November itself and revised it further to 8,600 cars, he said.

"We have managed to exceed this target as well with a total sale of 9,003 cars. Our strong performance is a result of our diverse product portfolio, network expansion, unique marketing activities and after-sales service," he said.

Audi introduced five new models and variants last calendar year, starting with the launch of Audi TT, new Audi A4, Audi Q3, Audi S4 and Audi A8L 4.2 TDI.

"Our offering of compact luxury SUV - Audi Q3 and business luxury limousine, Audi A6 as well as the new Audi A4 have contributed greatly to this record sales performance," Perschke said.

In 2012, Audi also strengthened its dealership network not only in metros, but also in tier II & tier III cities, the release said, adding the company now has a footprint in 21 cities with 24 showrooms across the country.

Audi plans more investments in India

The German luxury car maker Audi from the Volkswagen stable was the last eneter the Indian luxury car market after its peers BMW and Mercedes-Benz but it has been the fastest in sales growth and also in terms of brand image in the country. Last year it ended just behind the market leader BMW in terms of sales both of which accounted formore than 18,000 units where overall nearly 28,000 luxury cars were sold. Audi sold 9,003 cars in India last year, expects to sell about 10,800 cars this year.

Now it has been reported in The Business Line that Audi is reportedly looking to enhance its presence in India through a fresh round of investments. The report quoted Audi India-Head Michael Perschke as saying “Right now, we are looking at another 5-10 year investment plan. For this, we would consider Aurangabad and Pune.”

Audi has manufacturing plants in Aurangabad and Pune. Though a final decision is yet to be taken, the additional investments may go towards sprucing up capacity and launch of new models. Audi had committed to invest €30 million in India when it set up operations in 2007. It has to “a large extent exhausted” that amount, according to Perschke. Audi considers India to be one of its top 10 markets in the world, expects to sell more cars in the country than in Japan by 2020. Audi, which assembles four of its total 12 vehicles sold in India from Aurangabad, intends to start assembling its sports utility vehicle Q3 at the plant by the second half of this year.

Audi zooms past BMW as number one player in Indian luxury car space

Volkswagen Group-owned, Ingolstadt based Audi has overtaken its rival BMW as the number one player in the Indian luxury car space for the first time in the first quarter of 2013. And that's not all the bad news for BMW: ET learns that Mercedes Benz has regained its number two position, relegating Munich-based BMW to third place.

According people familiar with the sales data, BMW India sold 1465 units in the January to March of 2013 of which 1410 units were BMW-branded vehicles and 55 were Mini-branded cars, a year-on-year decline of 40%. Audi in the same period sold 2,616 units posting a growth of 15% and Mercedes Benz India sold 2009 units growing by over 5%. Rushlane, an autoblog was the first to highlight the change in the pecking order.

When contacted, BMW India said that the company is not in a month on month race in individual markets. "The BMW Group is a very successful global company and continues to strive for a worldwide balance in sales. We will continue to our success story in India in 2013 due to the availability of new models such as the BMW 1 Series in the third quarter and a full year availability of the BMW 3 Series this year," the BMW spokesperson added.

Michael Perschke, Head, Audi India told ET, if the numbers are true, then Audi is not only number one in the first quarter of 2013, but for the whole of FY-13. "I think 2013 will be a very competitive year. It will be like an F1 competition, neck-and-neck racing and not like football league in Germany. At least we would end 2013 as a strong number two or we would be defending our number 1 position if things fall in place, as we have planned," he added. Perschke is confident, however, that Audi will be number one in 2014.

Just a few days back, Philip Von Sahr, president, BMW Group India told ET that for him the number one position does not matter. "The lead of one month here or there does not matter. What is important for us is to grow sustainably with profits, and our endeavour will be to build a strong brand and rank number one in sales and customer satisfaction," he added.

BMW overtook Mercedes Benz as the number one player in the luxury car space in 2009, and as Audi gained, Mercedes fell to the No 3 position in the first half of 2012. In 2012, BMW did not see growth, selling 9,375 units, while Audi grew at 63% to sell just over 9,000 units. JLR and Volvo also posted growth of 32% and 150% respectively albeit on a low base. The overall luxury car market in 2012 grew by over 15%-17% to around 28,500 units to 29,000 units.

But even with double-digit growth, the fight for market share was intense, with discounts in 2012 reaching 10% to 25% in some cases.

Experts say the Indian luxury car market is still at a nascent stage and the real battle for the number one position will begin once the entire range of products, from entry level cars like Mercedes' A Class or BMW's 1 series right up to super sports cars are available in India. "The real battle lines will be drawn in 2015-16, when the portfolio for all these companies will be complete," said Deepesh Rathore, MD India, IHS Automotive.
