Nissan Makes NV200 (Evalia) Van with Ashok Leyland

Nissan’s foray into the minivan market in India will start with a passenger derivative of the compact NV200. This will be the first product to be made through Nissan’s joint venture with Ashok Leyland.

Almost as long as a Toyota Innova, and much taller, the NV200 or X11M as it is internally known, will be powered by a version of the Renault Logan’s 1.5 DCI diesel (or K9K as Nissan calls it). The motor makes an increased 85bhp and this vehicle will use the greater efficiency of its car-like platform to position itself as the most efficient vehicle in its class.

The NV200 is based on a stretched version of the same Renault-Nissan Alliance B platform as the Renault Logan and promises to be more efficient than the Innova, which has a heavier body-on-frame construction.

In addition, Nissan has included fuel-saving measures like electric power steering, a shift light indicator set for maximum efficiency and low-rolling resistance tyres. This car also features very impressive packaging. Nissan claims vertical space has been very effectively used as the seats are upright and no space has been lost to a dedicated ladder chassis. So you have plenty of legroom as well as space for two full-sized suitcases, even when three rows of seats are being used.

The interiors of the car will be built to passenger car or SUV specification and ABS will be part of the package as well. The rear suspension, however, will carry cheaper leaf springs, which may mean that ride quality might be at a premium. The sliding-type rear doors may not appeal to all either.

What will appeal to prospective buyers is the price. Aggressive localisation could see a price of Rs 7-8 lakh being achieved when it goes on sale in 2011.

Nissan's quality will be top notch. And i don't think people will mind those sliding doors, if the car is an overall good package. But rear leaf springs worries me a bit.

India needs such an elegant looking van and seems like it would be placed as well as priced above Suzuki's APV, As Maruti Suzuki is much popular for the Value For Money products.

Sliding doors are not something to worry about, In fact they are much practical option for vans like this, As it becomes much easier to get in and out with help of them in congested area, Parking Lots for Instance.

NV200 to Debut Soon!

Nissan’s NV200 van will be launched in India soon. The 2010 Van of the year award winner is powered by a 1.5 liter oil burner which delivers 17kmpl. It will cost Rs. 9.25 lakh for the base model and Rs. 9.63 lakh for the top model (all prices ex-showroom, Mumbai). The van will mostly be used by tourist fleets as an alternative to the Toyota Innova.

I expected this price tag though it was earliersaid that this van would be tagged at 7-8lacs. Anyways i think it will be a introduce new quality standards to this MUV van segment in the same way as Innova did few years back. To me this van looks stunning.

The Nissan NV200 has very well finished looks and it's segment has quite a good scope in India. Nissan should try to price it much more competitively, Only then we can expect NV200 giving sleepless nights to Toyota Innova which has become a very common sight on Indian Roads now.

This van will be powered with the 1.5DCI Diesl where as the Innova has 2.5L under its hood. So this Nissan must be priced well below Innova to give it a tough time.

Re: Nissan to make NV200 van with Ashok Leyland

According to reports, Ashok Leyland has halted their project of bringing compact car to Indian markets. The company, along with its joint-partner Nissan, had earlier decided to explore the possibility of bringing out a car that would target the compact market.

Here's what ACI reports.

A senior Hinduja Group executive attributed this to the intense competition in the compact car segment. Ashok Leyland’s decision to stay away from the car business may be a wise move, as it has just entered into an increasingly competitive segment of light commercial vehicles with its LCV, the Dost. It would rather utilise its resources to get a foothold in a business which is an extension of its core M&HCV business, rather than venture into a new territory altogether.

Whether the move will impact the Nissan NV200, that's still a question!
