Android will soon support 'Smart Forwarding' to allow call forwarding between SIMs

With Smart Forwarding, the future version of Android will redirect all your calls from an unreachable number to the working one on your device. This feature will really come handy when one of your SIM cards goes out of service because of bad reception or lack of coverage. XDA notes that the feature will only work if you have two SIM cards in your device and only one of them is receiving signal to allow for calls.

Latest Android flaw can access your camera to click images and more: Here is what it is

“Strandhogg” Android Vulnerability
The latest Android flaw, dubbed “Strandhogg” has been discovered by security researchers at Promon. The flaw can access smartphones with any Android version (even the latest Android 10).

The unathorised access can allow hackers to click images from the device’s camera, access the microphone to listen to the users, send and read SMSs, get login credentials of the user, make phone calls and even record them. Additionally, it can access a user's location, contact list, call logs, and even private files.

The flaw can easily impact the 500 most popular apps, meaning the apps are at “high risk.” So far, around 36 malicious apps with the vulnerability have been found.

Opera has today announced that it is releasing a new version of its Android Browser that comes loaded with new features. The company has revealed that version 56 of the Opera browser now comes with improved reader mode.

The new reader mode utilizes fonts such as Roboto for the text body and Roboto Slab for headlines. The company has revealed that the font sizes were selected based on the feedback from Opera users. Roboto Slab also includes serifs, which makes article headlines look more like newspaper headlines and differentiates the text from the system font used in the rest of the browser’s UI.

Using this image as wallpaper will crash your Android smartphone: Know why

buggy-wallpaper-1590988286.jpg

According to a popular tipster Ice Universe, the picture, if used as a wallpaper on an Android smartphone will cause the device to crash and unable to reboot. This is currently happening for Android smartphones such as Google, Samsung, OnePlus, Nokia, Xiaomi, with Samsung being one of the most vulnerable smartphones.

A Reddit user has suggested that the reason the image crashes an Android device is due to the colour profile issue. The picture has an embedded colour profile that is allegedly embedded to brick the system.

However, there is one solution to this issue; if you come across the image and want to set it as wallpaper, just remove its colour profile. This can be done by either taking a screenshot of the image or editing it to hinder its colour profile so that it doesn't crash the smartphone.

Remove China Apps crosses 1 million downloads on Google Play Store

Remove China Apps, an Android app that claims to recognize and remove Chinese applications from Android phones is becoming quite popular in India. The app currently tops Google Play Store’s list of top free apps. Launched on May 17, the app has downloaded more than 1 million users so far.

This came in the limelight when anti-China sentiment reached its peak in the country. Since China is accused of spreading coronavirus on one side and tensions of the India-China border on the other. However, the creators of the Remove China apps claim that the app is “developed for educational purposes.”

New Android vulnerability warning issued by CERT-In

Android mobile users in India, you have a new security warning. This has been issued by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) few days back. The agency warns about security issues with phones running Android version below 10.

“An Elevation of Privilege vulnerability named “StrandHogg 2.0” had been reported in the Google’s Android. Due to confused deputy flaw in the “start activities()” in the “ActivityStartController.java” which allow the attacker to hijack any app on an infected device,” CERT-In highlighted in its statement.

The biggest problem with the vulnerability is apps can be infected with malware and installed on your device. The apps will ring no alarm bells because users won’t be able to detect any issues. And if you start using the app, attackers can gain access to data on your phone. Which allows them to read messages, access photos, and all the apps on the phone.

Opera updates Mini web browser app after long time

The mobile web browser is now offering new set of features based on the design. The moment you in open the app, users will be able to pick theme and colour for their profile. These changes will reflect on the homepage of the browser. But you’ll notice the header part of the browser now gets a subtle shade of gradient. The company has also added new set of button above the search bar. Even categories like news get new colour and their placement has been changed.

These are the only noticeable changes in the Opera Mini browser. The last time we heard from Opera, it had launched offline file sharing feature.

Android 13 may allow single eSIM to connect to two carriers at the same time

Google is expected to reveal some information about the next-generation Android 13 operating system at the upcoming annual developer conference next month. While some of the features of Android 13 have leaked online, the company could officially reveal these features at the conference.

According to Esper's Mishaal Rahman (via Android Police), Google is working on a way to allow users to have dual-SIM capabilities on handsets running on Android 13 with a single eSIM chip. For those unfamiliar with eSIM or embedded SIM, this is a digital replacement for the SIM card that you are probably familiar with and the chip is usually mounted on the phone's motherboard inside the handset.

Google-eSIM-MEP-Patent.jpg

Currently, eSIM allows only one subscriber line to be active at a time. So Google has been working on a way to offer dual-SIM support using a single eSIM chip. For this, the company has developed multiple enabled profiles (MEP), allowing one eSIM element to actively connect to two carriers simultaneously.

Google was granted a patent for this technology back in 2020 and is reportedly planning to include it with the final release of Android 13 during the third quarter of this year.

Apart from Android 13, the support for MEP could be available for other devices, including those running iOS, macOS, and Windows, as mentioned in the patent application. The Pixel series smartphones are reportedly being tested for this new feature and there’s a possibility that Google could license the technology to other companies.

There are a couple of features of the Android 13 that have already leaked online, including support for controlling the brightness level of the flashlight and allowing notifications to be dragged on the display in split-screen mode, among others.
