This should be probably the biggest topic of year. We all know that only 132 days are left before the common wealth games commence in India, which will go from October 3rd to October 14, 2010. Delhi’tes and others: Let’s post about the improvements happening in the city and other information in this thread. To start off, I’m posting excerpts from Wikipedia:

The 2010 Commonwealth Games are the nineteenth Commonwealth Games, and the ninth to be held under that name. The Games are scheduled to be held in Delhi, India between 3 October and 14 October 2010. The games will be the largest multi-sport event conducted to date in Delhi and India generally, which has previously hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi. It will also be the first time the Commonwealth Games will be held in India and the second time the event has been held in Asia (after 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).
The two principal bids for the 2010 Commonwealth Games were from Delhi, India and Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. A ballot of members was held in November 2003 at the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Delhi bid won by a margin of 46 votes to 22, confirming India's first successful bid for the Games, while marking Canada's to host its fifth games.
India shifted the balance in its favour in the second round of voting with a promise that it would provide US$ 100,000 to each participating country, along with air tickets, boarding, lodging and transport. The successful 2003 Afro-Asian Games held in Hyderabad was also seen as having showed India has the resources, infrastructure and technical know-how to stage a big sporting event. India also thanked Latif Butt, former vice president of the Olympic Council of Asia, for his support in the winning bid, by saying, "You played a vital role in the Commonwealth Games 2010 being allotted to India. Such actions are worthy of emulation by all concerned in Pakistan and India. I have no doubt that if both sides continue to live by such ideals, one day, sooner than later our generations to come will reap the benefits of and be grateful to those making such contributions. You would certainly be such person."

Since majority of members is not from Delhi, May be that’s why this thread didn’t promoted much, but everyday, we can definitely notice the improvements going on. Some of the worst areas of city have begun to appear like a paradise. I shall click some images to share with you all this weekend.

Actually this was one of most important event, where India should have shown its engineering and planning execution. But just to make some quick bucks by some politician, it has shamed us.

It seems that the inmates are running the asylum. How else can you explain the chaos in the Capital?

Our roads lie decimated by the occasional shower, and we’re told to believe that, in fact, a certain imminent sports event is to blame! Unfortunately, the state of unpreparedness that we find ourselves in for the Commonwealth Games is symptomatic of a much larger problem – one that’s so deep rooted in the system that it’s actually hard to locate. And it manifests itself in many ways, not least of which is in plain sight – on our roads.

You’ve got the MCD, the NDMC, the PWD, the DJB, and a couple of other acronyms that I can’t presently think of, and they each seem to work independently of one another as rulers of their very own cosmos. You’ve also got the DMRC constructing the metro, and two dozen other contractors working in different parts of the city – on anything ranging from different stretches of road to various Games sites. And not one is accountable to the other.

The end result is complete apathy, carnage and anarchy on our roads – it’s so extreme that it appears almost orchestrated. What we need is a single entity to authorise, oversee, and be held accountable for the work of these individual agencies. Oh wait, isn’t that supposed to be the (ineffectual) Delhi Government?

As a country, we may have a socialist past, but you’d be hard pressed to find any traces of that in the attitude of our public servants. After all, it couldn’t be more capitalistic than this – each one is out to see how deeply they can fill their own pockets. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating socialism – perhaps a mild conscience and a meek sense of accountability at best.

Quite ridiculous I should say. Hardly a couple of days to go for Common Wealth games and all authorities are just rushing to complete their jobs, last time I saw, the construction was still going on at India Gate. And today? Alas! The sight is like this: Hectic traffic jams (Special thanks to CWG lane); MCD is filling those huge potholes in midst of roads, fake flowers on the round-abouts etc. But what makes me happy is that due to this, at least, there’s a huge improvement in infrastructure of our city, and cops have finally wake up too!

I believe everything will go well. In news updates, they say everything is satisfactory. At last, air force will monitor the entire play.
