Engine Bay and Engine Performance & Power and Torque Figures

20150624_121103.jpg

The new Safari Storme face-lift comes with a tweaked engine this time but the cubic capacity remains same as 2.2L. To begin, the idling sound of the engine is really refined and no distortion in sound while acceleration. The clutch adds to the comfort and is really well meshed. There is almost no hardness in the clutch and this adds to the driving pleasure. Talking about engine noise, the cabin is really well insulated and if you give a peek inside the wheel well the insulation done there improves the in-cabin experience by reducing the engine noise to a great extent.

20150624_120840.jpg

The engine while driving I felt was not sluggish and performed well to my expectation. The hood of the new Safari Storme face-lift is hydraulic and well carpeted from inside that further reduces the noise from the engine. If I talk about the 2.2 L Varicor's power and torque output then you can expect a power of 150 PS at 4000 rpm and Torque of 320 nm at 1700-2700 rpm.

Steering

20150624_121243.jpg

The Face-Lift Safari Storme comes with a new steering wheel which is just like the Bolt. 2-tone steering wheel with steering mounted controls and airbag. About the steering if I talk then this new steering does feel light and being power assisted it does help a lot in turning this SUV with much ease at tight spaces. Another thing which I loved while driving it was the cornering ability. I drove this SUV in narrow lanes and I was really pleasantly surprised with the ease it can turn on corner of street. However, If I compare its looks with earlier one, then for sure the the earlier one looked much better. It provided much grace to this gigantic SUV.

Brakes and Ride Quality of Face-Lift Safari Storme

20150624_121256.jpg

Well buddies, the top trim VX driven by me comes equipped with ABS (8.1) and the EBD and all 4 wheels have disc brakes. Now to test the braking capabilities of this SUV, I braked hard at times and even braked normally. Under both circumstances, this SUV did not disappoint me. The brakes are responsive and the provision of disc brakes does add to the precision. The halting time of this SUV with such good brakes is pretty less as I observed today. For Highways, I must say this type of braking with accuracy is much needed.

Transmission

20150624_121507.jpg

This SUV is not equipped with Automatic Transmission at present. It comes with 5 Speed manual transmission. I am slightly disappointed with the gear shifts. Reason being, I felt the gear shifts are bit stiff but definitely not jerky. The transition between the gears is smooth but lever felt bit stiff to me. Talking about gear knob, this looked just like BOLT but yes I must say here, the knob looked better than the one in face-lift XUV-500.

Seating

20150624_120653.jpg

20150624_120714.jpg

20150624_120921.jpg

I am impressed and really very happy with the seating comfort and space this SUV has to offer. Being a sub-20 lac SUV, the amount of seating comfort and space is really worth and an added advantage. The front captain seats with superb lumbar and thigh support added to the comfort with armrest for driver and front co-passenger. The arm-too rest in front adds to the driving comfort.

Talking of the rear seats, they come with 60:40 split which adds to the boot space when needed. The head-room and legroom is brilliant in my view. Superb comfort provided. One thing that could be better was the seat fabric, though it does look decent but certainly can be improved upon.

20150624_120810.jpg

Talking of the 3rd row seats, they are serving no purpose in my opinion. They cannot seat a healthy kid or a adult even though the SA told me it can seat adult but looking at the width, I doubt his opinion. At best, 1 kid can be seated if at all really needed. The 3rd row seats are foldable and provide good boot space.

Egress and Ingress

20150624_121118.jpg

The egress and ingress are not an issue since the foot boards are provided on both sides for passenger's comfort.

Tyre, Alloys and Ground Clearance

The Face-Lift Safari Storme comes with 235/70 R 16 Spec Tubeless Tyre(s) with 4 Alloys* (only in VX). The spare wheel mounted beneath tail gate is non alloy. My test car had Bridestone rubber and these Tyre(s) felt really comfortable while driving. On potholes the jerk wasn't harsh thanks to the good GC of 200mm. The suspension in front and rear felt easy and smooth while on drive to me. The breakers did not feel bumpy when it went over them. Over all, a comfortable and peaceful riding machine.

Re: TATA Safari Storme Face-Lift 4x2 Manual Driven

Nice Review Akash. However i feel the interior could have been done better. features is what one expects when there is a facelift and sad to know its still far behind its indian competitor. I had expected more out of it this time. But have heard the engine is awesome, i believe its the same engine as in ARIA.

Nitin, as far as the engine is concerned, I am really impressed with it. Refinement as mentioned is Superb. As of interiors and some features, yes it lacks a bit on that part. However, we should hope that the AT Safari Storme which is being tested now, in that, TATA will surely fix up many of these things which are offered by competitors.

Re: TATA Safari Storme Face-Lift 4x2 Manual Driven

That's a nice and crisp review Akash but I have a different opinion about the car. Recently I too TDed the new Storme, XUV, Duster and of course Scorpio S10 (my partner owns one and it is partially my daily drive).

All in all I am disappointed with the facelift of Storme. Compared to the older vehicle, I am yet to find any remarkable change. XUV is already a modern vehicle and a minor facelift is fine but Safari is a bit dated now. Of course the underpinnings are changed, but Storme still feels like a Safari at the end of the day. Does it really drive like a 148 bhp hulk does? I mean where is the feeling that one expects from such an engine?
Interior is better now but still doesn't feel that special.

After the new Scorpio launch, I expected that Tata will also give some surprises but it surprised me by proving me wrong. Drive the super responsive Scorpio and Safari side by side and one can easily tell how the 120 BHP wild cat can have this 148 BHP elephant in its breakfast plate.

I request you to go and TD the new Scorpio and then check if the performance, FE and new driveability of Storme is up to the mark or not.

Re: TATA Safari Storme Face-Lift 4x2 Manual Driven

Please don't include the push-button start as a big issue or necessity. It's basically a stupid feature which adds no significant value to the car or convenience.
The new Safari was already a huge disappointment in looks, but now the package has been made a bit better. It's still 3lacs cheaper than the W10 Xuv I suppose and offers decent equipment although the ACC, touch screen system and reverse camera are huge misses. Hope the ride/handling is improved from the original Storme.

Buddy, we as enthusiasts understand the actual use of any feature for a car but when the car is bought by common man who has simple knowledge and compares the fact that a 7.5 lac hatch/sedan can give a push button then why not an SUV.

As of looks, certainly views can be subjective. The brand safari though is quite old enough now and in the pipeline, you can see an AT Storme too but in same design. As Vipul said above, XUV is modern and in terms of modernity quotient the Storme is bit lacking. I also mentioned a point that from earlier version of Safari, the positioning of the spare wheel in Storme has ruined the look from the rear. The ICE given by Harman is an LCD and rightly not a touch-screen. The VX trim does have rear parking sensors. However, still this model Safari Storme has immense potential to improvise itself further.

About the ride and handling, Though I did not drive the earlier version, but the ride of this version was subtle and balanced. I did not feel any uncalled or harsh jerks while driving. Technically, I found to be refined to my tastes.

Akash
