Hi,

I was just searching for SOHC (single overhead camshaft) and DOHC (double overhead camshaft head) details and wanted to understand how effective DOHC is over SOHC.

I am also interested to know would there be any effect on mileage Eg: More mileage under DOHC rather SOHC. Because Figo gives around 16 to 18 KMPL (Diesel) and Swift around 20 to 22 KMPL (Diesel) but at the same time turbo lag is minimal in Figo than Swift. Is that mean SOHC = low mileage but better pick up and DOHC = high mileage and low pick up ?

So what is this all about ? [confused]

Re: DOHC over SOHC and difference / benefits

The only benefit is having two camshafts, one for intake and the other for exhaust valves. The two camshafts help you have more valves.Although 4 seems to be the best compromise. Also the DOHC won't have the rocker arms.
The real world mileage figures would be way different. The performance is more tunable on a DOHC due to the two cams.So you have a higher level of tune. The turbo lag can be solved by better tuning.
That being said a SOHC is not bad.It can be tuned, albeit not to the same level as a DOHC.The number of valves(intake and exhaust) are also limited to 2 instead of 4.But a lot of manufacturers are using them.Like Honda it uses an SOHC with the ivtec.Although the benefit of having it on a SOHC is limited. This is a technology originally developed on a DOHC.The system helps both kinds of engines in a different way.
