What's the Meaning Of Variant's Names (Lx,Vx etc)?

Ever wondered what is the meaning of variant names. For example: LXi, VXi, SXi, GLX and the list is long. I have throroughly researched on this but finally came to the conclusion that they do not have a particular meaning at all. Just that, they are used by auto-manufacturers simply to distinguish their one model from another. What's your take on this?

The answer is there in your post - it depends up on the manufacturer to distinguish products based on the features. The most confusing list I ever saw was for Hyundai. They have lot of versions for Santro !

I know do know that they are there to distinguish the trims of a single model but the thing is, do they have a full form? Sorry. Perhaps I was not clear in the opening post.

i dont think there are any such full forms of the variants..they are just named to distinguish their features.

hey vibs, i guess our older forum, we did had this thread as well as discussion regarding this where nothing else then to distinguish all variants of a particular car, these names are added, without having a meaning in that name.I dont think we need to continue this thread anymore.

You were clear Vibhor. My best guess - you know guess - some one might have used Lx to indicate Luxury. Vx to indicate Very Luxury and Sx to indicate Super Luxury!!! and that convention is just followed. He he, other than that, no idea dude

i think the era of short forms have gone.

- fiat has started using 'active', 'dynamic', 'emotion' etc for the GP & linea;
- honda uses 'elegance' & 'inspire' for the accord, 'mode' & 'active' for the jazz;
- hyundai uses 'magna', 'asta' & 'sportz' for the i10 & i20;
- benz uses 'classic', 'elegance' & 'avantgarde';
- mitsuibishi uses 'spirit' & 'sports' for the cedia;
- nissan uses 'comfort' & 'elegance' for the X-Trail;
- skoda uses 'ambiente', 'elegance' & 'L&K';
- tata uses 'terra', 'aqua' & 'aura' for the vista, 'classic' & 'grand' for the indigo XL;
- volkswagen uses 'trendline' & 'comfortline' for the jetta

so i think a new trend has started now!

You are right! the era of Lxi & Zxi is over.

We will not here all those codewords anymore.

Even TATA has changed it in Manza also like Aura, Aura(ABS) & Aura+

Come on Maruti, you are the one who uses the code words now!

Maruti's models are now more familiar, so i think they won't change it.

Fiat, Tata and Hyundai's new cars' variants name is also now getting familiar. Skoda's variants can also be distinguished easily.

Ford, old Tata cars(safari, grande), Mahindra, Renault, etc.. are pretty confusing.

Regarding the Maruti coding, The vehicle grade increases in the direction : L < V < Z.
A is used for the AT version if any.
X was, and is used for the petrol variants ... D is used for the diesel.
The "i" at the end denotes power steering, so ZDi would indicate the top end diesel variant, with power steering.
I agree, now with the Ambientes and the Astas and all, things are confusing.
But then, to each his own!!

Rightly said. These days we can see modern names to denote the variants in each car and car maker has made identity of their models through these. What we conclude till now is Variants name don't have any specific full form but are just used trim-wise per model.

and ZX would be Zuper Luxury ?

i knew about "i", it stands for power steering and the ones with "d" are diesels.
