Re: Difference between carburetor and fuel injector???

Carbs are the old technology and fuel injection is the new one.

They both do the same function of mixing air and fuel.

The cars that use carbs also have a mechanical fuel pump where as the cars with fuel injection have an electrical fuel pump.

Carbs are mechanical and require manual settings.Fuel injection is controlled by an ECU/ECM atleast this is how it works in cars.

The computer can control a lot of things on the fly and does not require user inputs. It makes thousands of calculations every second.

In a carb all settings need to be done by hand. There is a possibility that the fuel+air mixture will be rich in some instances or lean in some.Tuning a carb is a lost art these days.

A carb is more complex. It has a lot of screws that need fiddling.

All the following points are made by my experience with carbs and fuel injected cars.

Fuel injection in bikes is fairly recent atleast in India.Cars switched to fuel injection in the late 90's in India.

The cost difference between the two bikes should explain the difference in the cost of a carb and a fuel injection system.

The only difference I have noticed in fuel injection and carbs in on a climb. You have to accelerate more in a carb, where as in the case of fuel injection the loss of power on a climb is very less and you don't have to depress the accelerator much to keep the speed constant.

Thanks jarpickle. That explained a lot !
So, next question could be Pros & Cons !

The new Thunderbird 500cc is coming with FI and 350 with the Carburetors . So, which one should one prefer ?
Question asked because : Thunderbird /RE bikes are for long travel also. So, if you get stuck in some place & with Fuel Injection, will that be a problem as many of the mechanics would not be able to fix problems related to FI ? When I had avenger, i had to take to Pro biking service center to get the service done as it was FI.

Thanks for the explanation

When its comes to bikes FI is a new technology. But that doesn't mean it will need constant care.

A lot of carb and FI cars have been competing in the Raids. So both are rugged, if something has to go wrong it can happen to either one.As far as I know FI is used to keep up with the new Emission norms and to increase fuel efficiency.

When selecting a Thunderbird the cost difference between the 350 and 500 will also play a role.

Yesterday when I was comparing the Thunderbird 350 and 500 models, I encountered this doubt and TAI has already provided the answer to my doubt. Kudos. [clap]

Thanks very much friends. :)

Both are equally good.Duke has brought with it the latest technology. The Pulsar is using old technology.

When it comes to localization, you can get the Pulsar fixed anywhere. You might have to take the Duke or as appus pointed out the Thunderbird500 to a specialist place to get it fixed in the event something goes wrong.Pretty sure the manufacturer would think of these things.

Also the cost is a deciding factor. The specs of the bikes are closely matched, based on that I think they are equally good.If you money is no object go with the Duke else go with the Pulsar.
