Axles (also called as drive shafts) are the most important and vital component of any vehicle. It gets rotated by the differentials and in turn rotates the wheels. These drive shafts transfer the power from the differential to the wheel.
The most vital component in any axles are the two (inner and outer) CV joint bearings (Constant velocity joint). This CV joint helps the axle to rotate at the same speed irrespective of the jerks and turns afforded by the wheel. This CV joint is packed in a rubber boot with lots of grease in it. This grease acts as lubrication for the joint.
Whenever the grease in the boot leaks or gets drained out, the joint dosent gets enough lubrication and makes kat-kat sound and in worst case the bearing breaks resulting in failure of axle.
To maintain these shafts in top shape make sure to check these boots every 15 days. These rubber boots can get torned by stone hit or by age or dryness.
If the boots get torned it can easily be replaced at any Authorised service centres or any local garage. It is called repair kit in most service centres. It contains a rubber boot and a gaiter strap to hold it in place.
After opening the torned boots the bearing should be coverd with lots and lots of grease and should be coverd with new boot and the gaiter should be tightly placed in the boot to keep it in place.
Worn out CV joint can be repaired locally but it dosent lasts longer so the best solution is to change it.
The cost of one set of boot and repair kit is very less than the cost of new axles.
For ex- Cost of new MGP shaft is Rs2400 and cost of boot is Rs 177.
A well maintained axle can last at least upto 80000 Km.
