Team,

The question may be too good to be true, but, for a moment think about how much good these breathalyzers shall do in ensuring that the driver does not sit behind the wheels in a drunk condition at all.

Just like the other safety devices in our cars today, why can't we have a breathalyzer too? It will not only prevent drunk driving but it also will save many lives for good.

Just like we get various readings on our MID screens, an option for breathalyzer reading can also be included in it so that both the driver and passengers are safe.

We do read about drunk driving related mishaps often and I am sure the car makers are not aloof on this matter. Just like the government enforced a compulsory seat belt rule for all cars, similarly this can also be done in the interest of safety of all the people who drive on road.

Here are a few statistics about how this drunk driving has been dealt with and fatalities due to it.

Most high-end cars now feature anti-drowsiness function which monitors the driving pattern as well as the driver using cameras and motion sensors. Volvo was first to introduce in-built breathalyzers on production vehicles. It's called 'Alcoguard'. This is a project on which other manufacturers like Nissan are working to incorporate on their cars too. Making it a standard feature on all cars will be a noble initiative but the matter boils down to cost-effectiveness in India and similar markets. In a nation where cars with Zero NCAP ratings manage to regularly score top ten figures on sales chart, making such features standard seems like a far-fetched dream.

Absolutely Vibhor, It is sad but your observation is correct. I read a few months back that hatchbacks like Nano, Alto et al failed NCAP test yet they are hot favorites among the buyers. But, at a point of time even seat belts were not placed in cars and eventually their importance is realized by us. So, it is really important that this concept is initiated and standardized and it feels good to know that some brands have started working on it already.

No! We should have self discipline.
Self Discipline is most important and there are disciplined drivers driving cars with loads of safety features. So, this should be seen as a necessity and not solely based on subjectivity.

It is a way of deterring drivers from entering in the vehicle in drunk state. Even disciplined people at times sway from rationality. Those moments of lapse can be overcome by having this device.

Not the need of the hour.

[*]Why should you need a breath analyser for yourself ?
[*]Why should you employ drunkards to chauffeur you and your loved ones around ?
If its not required as of now then why does traffic police carry out random checks for drunk driving and penalizes the offenders?

If its not needed then why are accidents happening due to driving under influence? Why are such accidents even reported?

Not only chauffeurs, owners of the car, educated people don't think twice before falling prey to alcohol.

As @Boss said above, self discipline is required and I see this device as support to it. Majority of Indian drivers are weak willed people, circumstances make them jump the line an indulge into drinks and then drive too which is very dangerous.

None of us are saints, mistakes do happen and this device is to make sure that we learn to respect our lives and that of others with us and on the roads.

Wondering how does the system sense a drunken monkey in co-driver / rear seat, or a open alcohol bottle inside the vehicle.
Sharing a video of the demo. Anyhow safety still lies in the hands of driver to a considerable extent.

As someone rightly said, it takes 8,460 bolts to assemble a car, but only one nut to scatter it all over the road.

I am totally against.
We never drink.

And this stuff will downplay our honor every time we need to start our car. Atleast a new step to be followed before starting the car. Also what about any contagious diseases due to repeated use of analyzers or what about the device sterilization everyday.

See, What I feel is this step should be taken in benefit of all and I agree we educated people do follow safe driving and adhere to rules but there are others who are less-careful so in the name of their safety this type of device in the car shall make a change surely.

Self discipline is like god, it is required at every place, but is seen at no place. (even in western countries, self discipline is because of effective rules & laws. In India, we have rules & laws, but no effective system to implement them).

I think in-built BA made not only for cars, but first in trucks & buses, as mortality is sure when large vehicles are involved in accidents. Also they should be correlated with engine immobilizer & no shortcut to circumvent it.

@ DHOOM9 a very valid point.Mortality rate is definitely higher in large vehicles. that being said implementing such a rule is very important mere gadgets wont help. Also as Vibhorji said what about cost of vehicle which would come high.not everyone can afford such car with gadgets
