Real praise for the humanity to save so many lives
But real concern is locking of steering, which I am not able to digest. Even if it is true, was it because of lack of servicing? Not quite sure, but haven't heard anything like this before...

How does the steering lock itself ? I know its one of those rear cases but could be fatal. What say maruti suzuki ?
Stalling issue? The engine could have died off. Hence, all powered units like Steering, Brakes won't work.

I have been noticing that whenever an accident occurs the first thing that the person involved does is to shift blame to anybody or anything else.

Thinking bit over it, could it be because of electric motor assisting the power steering failed, and at high speed or curve, it felt like a steering failure rather than a hard steering?

Yeah. Whateva. Engine stalled or ignition went off & the steering, brakes nothing works. But then comon... why did this happen in the first place ? The owners can't be so careless (or were they?). Spark plug issue may be ?
The driver must have felt ghosts calling him in the car. Scary !! Phew..

1. Had the engine died brakes and steering wouldn't stop working 2. A malfunctioning spark plug wouldn't cause the engine to stall. If I were to hazard a guess as to what happened I would say either the driver fell asleep at the wheel, was distracted or misjudged what his or his car limitations were. Most people who drive on highways here are not even qualified to drive in much less difficult scenarios which is one of therreasons why so many fatalities take place. A person in most cases tries to learn how to drive after getting the driving license not before a direct result of the corruption that exists, and is a hazard not only to himself but the people who sit in his car and pedestrians etc.

when the ignition is off the brakes and steering wheel don't respond. Power assist goes down.Thats why people are not encouraged to do so on decline slopes. else there are many who would have done that to save fuel.
May be driver was asleep. That can also be the case as you pointed out. But then he is not a responsible driver.

The reports say that the Swift had just overtaken the minister's convoy. Now people generally fall asleep on empty roads driving in straight line. The section of SH 148 near Beguvalli Lake is by no means straight line. It is unlikely that the driver just overtook an entire convoy - requires some concentration to even overtake 2 vehicles - and then just dozed off in a matter of 15 minutes.

But can't rule out that he misjudged a corner - as there is an almost 90deg left turn when the road approaches the lake. Misjudge that, and you are likely to overshoot the road into the lake.

May be the tutn was misjudged by the driver, Also he might be at a high speed as he overtook the convoys. When the car entered the lake due to short circuit or so the electricals have stop responded or the car got shut down and that resulted in steering lock.

But I must say great job done by minister and his team. Now that we only here bad news about politicians. This is some good work which can be praised.

Well done by Driver and Minister. But, minister got more publicity than the Driver who saw it & stopped.

The latest story is like this in NDTV.
Swift over took Minister's vehicle and Convoy. After few km, Driver saw something sinking in lake in his rear view mirror. He stopped. Later Minister asked the Driver whether he knows swimming. When he said yes, minister told them to save them. Later with the help of locals, other vehicle passengers , they rescued it.

Really happy that Minister told the driver to stop and asked them to rescue rather asking driver to proceed. That itself is a great thing these days.

Kudos to the Unknown DRIVER who saw it and helped them !

Yeah kudos to the team. These days helping strangers on the roads has become an act of the past. Nice to read this article in a way and felt bad for the guy who locked his steering. the reason for the lock, still unknown.[sleep]

some people like to drive vehicles on neutral with engine turned off when it is at high speed/inertia especially on downhill slopes since it saves fuel. this was very popular in days of the bajaj scooter, I have seen many "uncles" in the 80s turning off the key of the scooters in the last 100 metres of their destination & putting it in neutral & trying to maximize fuel efficiency!

No in this case the steering could have locked due to a similar reason but brakes stopping to work is a mystery! Maybe was at high speed & just did not get time.
