I'm new to this forum and would like to let you all know my experience so far:
Deciding for a new car:
The fist question; WHY ?
I am a hard-core Maruthi Suzuki fan and I've been owning & driving their cars all along. My current car which is a Swift Vxi (2007 Model) is bigger & better than any of the current version of Indian hatch-backs. The power, pick-up and performance has always been unbeatable. Such was the power of 1.3L, 90 BHP models
If so good, then why think of a new car. I never had the intent too. But, when it came to family / extended family trips and driving down to areas where there are no proper roads, it used to get beaten up but never went down.
So, the thoughts of switching to a new car began creeping my mind from October 2013; for a car that can be a man's best friend, a family car & at times an off-roader as well.
Second Question, Which Car ?
I had only 2 in mind, firstly Renault Duster and finally Mahindra Xylo. No Maruthi here
. Why, becoz the Ertiga has the same or lesser capacity engine that what I have in my Swift, so my mind din't divert to it at all.
Beginning of Test Drives:
Firstly the Renault Duster - Too good on performance, road presence, ground clearance, cabin & luggage space and mileage. I loved it at first sight and love it now too. But, when further explored, the price is too high for base models, the interiors are badly designed and quality of materials is not good, also network of service centers & time-frames for repairs were very bad and super expensive as every unit had to be shipped to India. And when it came down to people capacity, the SA said, its a 5 seater + 1 baby seat behind which is not comfortable for kids at all. So, a BIG NO from my family.
Finally Mahindra Xylo - Wonderful car, spacious, enormous road presence, superb handling & manuverability, too good seating & legroom, nice interiors and good amount of road clearance for a 10lakh car. When it came to city drives which is 80% of the time, its not a fuel efficient car and 2.2L engine struggles in bumper to bumper traffice in bangalore.
Deciding & Finlization of our new car:
During November 2013, we decided and finalized with Mahindra Xylo as it met most of our requirements. We waited patiently for the SA to share their price list and discounts to us. During this time we got to know that Maruthi Suzuki is expecting to launch a cross over of Swift naming X-Cross & I even got a sneak peak of the models pictures and it wowed me
. So, we waited in patience for the next few weeks to see if the X-cross would be launched in Dec'13 or Jan'14.
Selling my Swift Vxi:
When I was scouting for buyers for my Swift, the MS showroom called me in, to see if I would like to sell it back to them under their 'True Value' brand and go for another vehicle of their own.
Now comes in the Ertiga:
When we were called in for having our old car assessed for their purchase, rather than waiting in the lounge area, we thought of having a look into Ertiga. So, we walked towards one of the brand new vehcles in their lot & started to look around. Though back of my mind I knew the engine is same as my swift from an overall perspective, I started to dig deep into the car.
Change of Mind & Change of Car:
The moment we started to explore more of Ertiga, the more I started to like it. The comfort, the features, the ground clearance, the interiors, the handling, seating capacity, leg-room, the twin-AC with controls, the performance, the mileage, the design.... just wow.
Then came the Test Drive, intially as I've been saying the power is similar to my old Swift, I knew it would be too under powered for such a big car. But, when I started to push the RPM, the moment it hit 1800+ there came the WOW factor. With a full load capacity it just took me off my feet & brakes/ clutch/ gears fealt so light to drive & handle. Amazing TD it was.
But then there has to be negatives too right, so, fully loaded and AC on, on a steep road / bumper-bumper traffic it was struggling in 2nd gear to pull. This may also be becoz the TD vehicles are badly managed. Then, the luggage space, though enough for small trips with all seats up, a big more boot space would have helped. No reverse parking sensors / camera.. are you kidding me for a 10L high end car ??? The interiors, floor carpets & door trims are beige, how do you suggest we keep it clean ? by covering it ? then what use is it off ? The 2DIN player should have been better & most of all.. no leather upholstery ? Damn it.. they are also beige to add it up to the others. But, hey.. we are all OK with this coz at the end of the day everybody asks "Kitna Deti Hai" and with smiles I can say better than yours :-D
So then, we came back to the showroom & called few of my friends / family to know their opinion and everybody seemed OK. So, we took the estimates for a ZDi model which was approx 11L after discounts & we informed them we'd call back.
When scouting for owners review / reviews by professionals on the net, this is when I read the TAI
tread for Ertiga ZDi owners reviews. Majority of the reviews / comments were good and helped me believe that I'm nearer to my goal of finalizing my new big bad car. Finally came the comparison of two cars again :
The Mahindra Xylo & Maurthi Suzuki Ertiga. Though in certain areas the Xylo did favour a lot, Ertiga swept across all areas when it came to handling in city limits. After a lot of comparisons, I mean too many, Ertiga emerged as the Winner.
Booking our new Ertiga ZDi :
Now that we finalized that this was best for us, we went to the show room and got a full in-sight from our known SA and were advised to wait for another month so we can go with the 2014 model. The very first day of 2014, we made a payment to block our new car and the selection was for - "Maruthi Suzuki - Ertiga ZDi - Dusky Brown with Allow Wheels
And ever since this date, we've been patiently awaiting to hear about our new car and today we got a call from the SA stating its arrived in Bangalore & will be allotted to us in the next 10 days.
This has been the story so far & I shall keep you all posted & share pics of my new beauty on its arrival.
Meanwhile, do let me the things that I can accessorize my beauty with & pointer on maintaining her too.
See you all soon !
