Short gear ratios and a very flat torque curve is what helps Innova get in and out of every situation. My older one had been to Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Jwala Ji, Vaishno Devi, Ladakh and many such hilly outstation trips facing some of the toughest hilly roads and some times with even 8 people on board but the steady steed never broke in the middle, it simply pulls and pulls, no matter what's written on the paper.
In fact I opted for a used Innova (found a good one actually, else Fortuner was the plan) for the same reason, here I am facing bad roads which aren't suitable for the Corolla and I frequently have to make long road trips of 500+ kilometers one way, so a properly steady steed was the requirement with proven mechanicals, reliability and capability to take on anything you throw at it. You think anything else comes close to Innova for such requirements at the price? Fortuner is in the list and I am searching for a good low mileage example.

Its only because of the short gearing that one finds the tacho needle at the wrong side of even 3000 or 4000 with the speed being no so high. Innova is good for highway drives of upto 120 kph, after that it's simply out of breath, still it manages to cross 150 kph though.

Sirji the torque curve of Innova is very flat, it starts pulling right from the beginning and pulls all the way to 3500 rpm. Now a 2.5l engine is coupled to a gearbox with short ratios and the weight of the vehicle is already on a lower side if compared to many others. Result: A very efficient use of every single Nm of torque available and the vehicle simply pulls in any situation.
