Absolutely not. Will buy an Aria over XUV or Innova any day. Please note, I am not making a comparison here, haven't owned either a XUV or an Innova, this is purely based on my Aria (15,000 + km) experience.
As far as the reviews are concerned perhaps they refer to the earlier versions pre 2013 models which had issues. I was worried as well when I bought it in late 2013. The other thing is Tata's never had a good pr machine, this is true for most of their businesses. They are soft targets.
The only grouse I have is with their service. They pamper you alright, but some how that is one area that needs to improve.

Yes the lower end Pure LX does have OVRMs that heat when the demister is on. This was a pleasant surprise. Thanks Shail for asking!
Just returned from another Bangalore - Kottayam trip. This time took the Dindigul, Theni Cumbum Kumily route. Mileage 13km/ltr. Speed mostly in the - 120-130 range. No issues to report.
The steering feels it a bit tough after a long highway drive when you enter the city. Is this just that... a feeling? Any thoughts?
Have got the 15,000 km (3rd)service done. Went to Concorde motors in Koramangala. No issues in particular, one of the power window controls had come off. Fixed. Total expense came to Rs 211 ( for wheel balancing weights).
Next service at 30,000km. Somehow feels too long especially after many years of 5000 km service intervals that Maruti has.
Service experience - average. The service executive was in hurry to get rid of me. So I went down to the workshop to talk to the service guys. They did not call me to let me know when the car would be ready. I received a message saying that the car is ready, when I called the service executive, he was clueless. Later he called back and asked to collect it in 2 hours (the message said it was ready).
Seemed very uncoordinated.
Overall the same feedback.
The car is great, the service needs to improve.
