Before I start here is the reason why is this?
Basically Iíve an allergy, scratch allergy. Up to the time I love my bike and car I really cant consider any scratches, big scratches: no way! Small unnoticeable scratched should be fixed immediately. I always want the paint surface clean and smooth like a mirror and zero scratches. I donít want my car to be very shiny so people say wao, but I want to keep it neat and clean and always like just bring out from showroom. And the most lovable, what I most care about in automotive is its paint, mostly body paints, why? any damaged parts could be replace any time but you cant change the body paint anyway. You can fix it by professionals and you will get the area same as a new one but still it will not be like the factory one. Because in factory these cars are painted by robots what material they use, what process they follows no ASS
ever cant do that. When a robot paints the all over carís paint thickness remains almost same to everywhere, but when hands do that it cant be same.
Well I think like that. Its of course a big hurt for me as it was a 1st scratch but I quickly recover as it was on the bumper which I could replace anytime. But still I had to fix it ASAP
so my friends wont say ďhey itís a scratch in your new car?Ē
ok, then how to do it? as you know its India and there have very less products for touchup paints etc, in US you will get a vast kind of these products, even OEM
Hyundai sales factory paints for touchup just you need the color code. Ultimately they have lots of options and we have less. 5 years back when I brought my 1st bike, the situation was same and I was looking for a touchup paints. Then after lots of research I found the Com-Paint product, but then no one knows about it and it wasnít that effective. So somehow I leave that. But now when I require something like this again I see it improves a lot and quickly take it. Also Value Pack provides vast range of color shade with the car model and it had all require tools you will need. Now how to repair a paint damage:
According to my experience I must say if itís a small scratch the easiest and cost effective way is get a Nailpolish same matching color and use it as a touchup paint (in India though). And if big damage then go for paintings. However for spray touchup paint you will need skills otherwise you can messed up.
So here the DIY starts with the product Com-Paint value pack (pic 1). If you go to their site (Aeroaids Corporation - Com-Paint Touchup Spray Paint, Aerosol Spray Paint Manufacturers
) you can choose by the car model and paint name and you will know what tools they provides in their pack, so Iím not explaining them to make the writing short. Also they provide a demonstration video which will help you.
But Iíve my own way. As its not a OEM
product so I want sure this paint will be 100% match, as its really difficult to make a metallic paint match with no n OEM
product. Ok so here is my damage (pic 2), its on the plastic area and its quire deep and at the round edge which is really hard to get a perfect finishing.
So 1st well clean all the damaged area and I applied masking tape like this, its not a automotive masking tape, just a cello tape and no issue with me. What that? because I only wanted to repair the damaged area, I donít want the paint on the other areas. Then use the filler compound by the applier tool, actually its very easy to do in flat surface, but as mine was on the edge and itís a round area so it was hard to give it the exact shape. After apply as the manual says give it 30mins to dry properly and then sand. (Pic 3) But wait here is a myth:
if your damage area is not very deep or in edges like mine where more filler compound require then you can let it dry for 30mins to 1hour but if its like mine then leave it at least 5-7 days to dry out properly. Because in my 1st attempt the work was perfectly done and I was very happy, but after few days I see the repaired area dry up more, squeezed and looses its finishing. You know what I mean? So if any damages like mine, let the filler dry for a week and then paint. (Pic 3)
Ok now after the filler dry up, do sanding and smooth the filled area. This product provides 2 sand paper EP-400 great and EP-2500 great. You can feel free play with the EP-2500, its works similar like 2x rubbing compound) but very careful will the EP-400 great, it can damage your existing paint, as it does mine. Just use these as much as require. Ok so here how it looks after the sand paper apply and it takes its shape. (pic 4 and pic 5)
After this done again clean the area with water and clean rag. Now painting: before painting cover other areas with papers. What I did I fully cover the car with its cover and leave the painted area then use papers on the painted areas and other open areas as masking. Its better to cover the full car as while painting these paints flies in the air and it will seat on the other areas, if its sits on the plastic mat finishing area then it will looks bad. Then its better to do a practice on some other thing to understand the paint flow and speed. When its done do the spray painting from at least 8inch away. Give it 2-3 quote, 15mins gap between each and after done remove the masking tape carefully. (Pic 6 after the painting, and Pic 7 masking removed)
If you use masking taping like me then it will create hard edges for the new painting areas. (Pic 7 and 8 see the painted area edges, that is hard edge). But during polishing this could remove. Now after the paint done give it 2 days to dry up, according to the manual. And then do good polish the area to remove the hard edges and match with the surface.
(Pic 8 after the paint dried properly)
Now again use masking tape for polishing, just leave a little gap from the painted area (pic 9). Why masking for polishing? Because this will require hard polishing and multiple time and polishing actually removes paints from the surface, so only polish the effected area.
Pic 10, 11, 12 after the polishing done and how it looks from a distance. My reviews about the whole thing is:
# This product works good for minor scratches.
# The filler material is not works good in deep scratches or the filler quality is not great.
# The most important thing is the paint: unfortunately the paint is not 100% match. Itís a myth, like I said its hard to match metallic paint also more without clear quote. So I get a big can of clear quote as small can wasnít available and the whole thing cost me Rs 900. The paint is a perfect match from 90 degree angle but not from any other angle. Also as itís a aerosol paint so its not like a true quality automotive paint. Its not that hard when fully dry, by keep polishing its will remove.
So for the total product review I will give 7 out of 10. And if you need a really perfect finishing then better to get it done from ASC even if it cost more.
