MY ALBUS: GOT THE BEST HUD APP
Hope, many of our friends would have read and even tried a HUD display after reading my earlier article. My New Honda City in White - The Albus
I am sure; some of you may not be pleased as you would have missed the following steps.
Got the best APP
Selected the Phone
Located the ideal Dash place
Made reflection perfect
Improved the GPS reception
Happy, & enjoying.
GOT THE BEST APP
There are so many so called HUD APPs for Android phones.
My analysis categorized them based on their reflection as: A.
Reflects real-time data as connected to car’s OBDII port via Bluetooth (but No Navigation/MAP) B.
Reflects Simple (OR) Multiple data via GPS
1. Only speedo meter
2. Speedo Meter + Distance + Time + others like Battery/GPS signal etc.,
3. Navigation Arrow (Running on background map) + Data as in serial 2
4. Navigation Arrow (Running on background map) + Data as in serial 2+ communication like phone/ FB/ SMS
My choice was a free (without annoying ADs) or least expensive APP, reflecting bold minimal data like speed, distance, time and navigation.
I have downloaded and tried many (More than 20) applications but most of them failed to satisfy me. I wanted a simple design which does not distract our driving. The digits should be editable for color and background, preferably with bigger, pleasing fonts. Most importantly the navigation arrow should work seamlessly on real time background with Google Map.
I rejected without prejudice some of the best rated APPs, as they are cluttered, loaded very slowly, Google Map not properly integrated. Example –HUDWAY, DigiHUD Pro Speedometer, Ulysse Speedometer, Navier HUD Navigation, GPS HUD Speedometer, Z-NAV Z-HUD Navigation, Custom HUD Speedometer, Vision HUD (good but with Ads), Simple HUD (HubInSoft Inc.) and GPS Navigation & Maps Sygic. The 3 APPs satisfied me:
1. Head-Up Nav HUD Navigation – simple, uncluttered data, so smooth to integrate Google Map for Navi Arrow. (@Rs.75/- for paid version)
2. Simple HUD (Matjaž Lenič) – I loved the simple, beautiful / powerful reflection of Speed / Distance & Time, (but no NAVI -Free APP)
3. Torque Pro HUD (OBD 2 & Car)(Plus Two Themes) – undisputable APP for OBD II Real-time reflection, but without navigation. Works on BT @ ELM327 Bluetooth Gadget.
Since NAVI guidance is my priority, I purchased, downloaded - Head-Up Nav HUD Navigation from Play Store. It’s awesome, the only HUD APP out there that integrates so nicely with Google maps @ voice, clean and accurate.
SELECTED THE PHONE
The color of the phone, display and reflection are important for a pleasant experience. Check your Android software version for APP compatibility.
A Black color phone is the best choice and others will leave unnecessary shades/reflections.
The majority of phones use back-lighting panels. TFT and IPS panels don't have perfect black & it may at night reflect a grey reflection of the light when driving at night. This means it will be better in an AMOLED screen.
LOCATED THE IDEAL DASH PLACE
Placement should be such a way that it is tilted towards windshield so that we, driver won’t be seeing the original phone display. Otherwise, two reflections will irritate us. Fortunately ANHC (3RD GEN) has a horizontal shallow depth on the dash board, easy to keep as we like. For other dashboards if flat, may require a slanting holder so that the phone goes inside and reflects on the windshield.
Without reflective screen / film, we may find ghost image reflection as windshield is made out laminated glass. (Windshields have three layers- A glass inside and another glass in the outside, both of these glass sandwich a strong vinyl called Polyvinyl butyral to avoid shattering).
If we want a better reflection, mark outside of the glass area where the reflection falls with a neatly cut 6x8 inch paper and then paste the reflective film inside, correctly/firmly without bubbles by using credit card & then remove the marker paper outside.
I preferred placing the phone on windshield in the left side of the steering wheel and not straightly in front of my face.
HUD on windshield glass is excellent for early morning, evening & dark situations only.
During the full daylight, stand reflection is better for viewing; I am yet to get it from AE and shall share my experience. (I am also afraid whether it will create three reflections – Phone, Stand and again on Windshield.)
IMPROVED THE GPS RECEPTION
Learned the GPS antenna location in my SAM GALAXY NOTE2 and methods to improve GPS reception. Added an APP (GPS Test) and a strip of aluminum foil as understood online. (We can do only when we know the location of phone GPS antenna receiver inside and by this way, should nowhere connect two electrical points on the phone)
HAPPY & ENJOYING.
Yes, you will love it.
Just try, download the free version, and keep the phone as suggested in front of windshield @ no cost. If you really like, proceed to improve further.
We may link the Google Map Navigation Voice with our Bluetooth receiver / HU for better sound if needed.
Always concentrate on the road and just have a glance when comfortable. CAUTION:
Prepare everything leisurely (Like Map Destination) before driving and never ever fiddle the phone / APP while driving.
