“The Executive Decision”

New-Mercedes-Benz-E250_51.jpg

The ubiquitous three pointed star, Mercedes Benz, made an early move into India back in 1994. Since then, the brand has emerged as one of the former German luxury car manufacturers to understand Indian market. In fact, its Indian association dates back to 50’s when it had a tie-up with Tata Motors, who were responsible to import Daimler commercial vehicles in the nation. The relationship of two went a long way. Mercedes later went to establish the Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India Pvt. Ltd. (MBRDI). A 100% captive unit of Daimler AG, as a research institute with eight employees in 1996 and currently has strength of 580 employees.

In 1998 they decided to go solo in India. In Mercedes own words "MBRDI is the largest Research and Development center of Daimler AG outside Germany and contributes in the areas of Computer Simulation (CAE), Design (CAD), Electrical/Electronics and IT-Services. Research and development engineers at MBRDI assess the performance and reliability of various sub-systems and contribute to product development in all the stages of the life-cycle."

Previously, we tested the A-Class (Mercedes Benz A-Class Review & Pictures: A Class Apart) and now the second in series is the much awaited New E-Class. Mercedes Benz E-Class is perhaps is the most well known Mercedes in India ever. It was the one which made a grand entry in India back in 1994 and represented wealthy influential emerging Indian business class and executives back then. Truly, this car laid the foundation for the brand called Mercedes Benz in India.

Following video shares some interesting insights on the legendary W124. It was built to last and purists even till dates swear by this.

So good is the build quality that it still does the role which typically SUVs should do in the African outback.
Today, Mercedes sells a variety of classes/offerings in India as below, but its the E Class which bean the personal vehicles journey for MB in India :-

Assembled/ Manufactured Locally
  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class
  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  • Mercedes-Benz M-Class

The E Class has a glorious history with models like W120,W110, W114/W115, W123, W124, W210, W211, W212. Originally, E stood for Einspritzmotor (German for fuel injection engine). The W124 was the first E class in India and still popular with enthusiasts. Back then it was priced near the the current A Class prices - food for thought for economists ! The purists still scout the seconds market for the original W124's!

Mercedes Benz E-Class (E250 CDi): Looks and Design

The E-Class abandons twin separated front lamps design which was a standard in the last few generations and kind of goes to the W124 types rectangular in nature but high in technology. However, the new E class is designed for an executive, its subtly sporty not the in your face sportiness as is evident with the A Class rather. Aerodynamics is executive in nature in the E Class and it oozes class in itself. Of course, the target market being the executives! The car is all about showing classiness and a sense of I have arrived as a "Corporate Executive". Mercedes say "Harmony" is the recurring theme in the new E Class.

This 2013 E class is a face-lifted version of the original W212 which was launched in the Geneva Motor Show in 2009. The front especially gets a radically new treatment with a new trademark platypus like front grill which extends out of the bonnet area (when looked from the side profile especially). The bumpers flows aesthetically and merges with the bonnet, a very wide radiator grill with twin slats and large Mercedes logo upfront, which is now a trademark in all classes.

The large Bi Xenon lights with DRLs and big front 3 pointed star gives it a classier look, its all about muted sportiness and classy lines. The LED design especially seems to be pointed attention towards the big 3 pointed star (which is also LED lighted by the way). Note there are no separate fog lamps provided, although the front lamp is Bi Xenon and when you click on the fog lamps this moves in a motorized manner to adapt. The LED intelligent lighting system is adaptive in nature to various lighting conditions and sports a DRL as well. No special grille treatment as how the A-Class got, this is simpler plastic grill integrated with the front, however still aesthetic. Front bumper has integrated front sensors for safety which are also placed all the way to the sides of the bumpers.

The side profile is also very dynamic giving an impression of a curve as a crease rises above as you move from front to rear, looks classy but very long. Also, huge wheelbase gives it a limousine like feel; this is indeed a long car at nearly 4.9 meters. The panoramic sunroof accentuated in black adds to the stealthy look - It’s fully electronic with a sun-blind and has front and rear split sections. The B pillars are blackened further adding to the aerodynamic profile. The large glass area, very reflective black roof and white body especially looked very attractive. Large doors with pull type handles lead you to plush interiors. The dual 5 spoke alloys in grey and brushed alloy finish and sport 245/45 R17 sizes shoes.
The rear is probably the best angle when it comes to looks (as well as the front, though side looks very long), it looks very broad with the LED lights adding to the suaveness.

The rear lights make the car standout at night. The reverse camera is very neatly hidden above the number plate and provides a very wide view of the rear. Additionally, rear bumper features six reverse sensors covering the side of the bumpers as well. The rectangular twin exhausts make the rear of the car absolutely standout along with the broad low profile tires. Fit and finish, paint quality are top notch. The build quality is undoubtedly premium and the doors shut with a soothing German thump. There’s nothing to explain except the usual puny small Mercedes ORVMs. The shark fin antenna on the top adds to the blackened roof characteristic. Mercedes has given the rear a very nice chrome treatment keeping the classy nature of the vehicle in mind.

Re: Mercedes Benz E-Class (E250 CDi): Looks and Design

The interiors are typical Mercedes Benz E class, sportiness is purposely mellowed and the classy quotient has to be there - Why else is an analog clock required? The brushed aluminum finish is premium and classy; the feature list is virtually endless. Step inside and you will be cocooned in a class of its own, everything is thoughtfully placed and functional. However, it will take some time to get used to the complexities. The steering is large and leather treated and provides immense grip, neither too light nor too heavy, precise. There are two sets of controls, you can use the left set to navigate through the MID, the MID virtually has a host of indicators and controls and nearly duplicates the COMAND (display interface) for a variety of functions. Pretty easy to use once you get a hang of it. The right hand set of controls helps you use the phone / volume / mute and voice control features.

The E-Class COMAND unit can be controlled by a variety of voice commands and once the voice command button is activated, the display shows you the most relevant voice command for that screen. The horn needs unusually high pressure to activate but sounds really good and different – You might not use them much in Germany but out here in India it’s not exactly bad manners using the horn - it’s more a question of survival. There are 4 stalks besides the steering apart from the paddle shifts, one to control the automatic gear, one for cruise control and speed limit setup and another to control the wipers / washers, high / low beams and side indicators. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you are familiar it all comes easy. The cruise control stalk will probably take the most time getting accustomed. IRVMs are auto-dimming with lights incorporated within. The 4th stalk is to electronically adjust the telescopic steering wheel position.

The instrument cluster features a trio of dials with the central large one for the speedometer/MID integrated functionality, sporty black and white and well backlit, making it very easy to read – in fact it looks so much better at night. The Speedo dial especially is not centrally pivoted but works along the arc from the outside - nice touch and hence Mercedes are able to host the MID within this.

The other dials show the standard stuff like RPM, Engine temperature and fuel gauge. The central dial digital MID displays covering a host of functions and also setup information. You can configure a lot of items here like DRLs, Automatic Door Locks, Ambient Light levels, Attention assist, ESP. The mid features an innovative Eco Display which shows the level of Acceleration, Smooth Driving and Braking. It has a host of other features like displaying FE, trip meter readings, Driving range, Tire pressures, Run Flat Indicators, Service Information, and Audio etc. The right side of the steering has a conventional European style button to operate and switch on the headlamps or put them in an auto mode along with a fog light switch.

The central console looks beautiful with COMAND system. The 14.7 cm TFT display takes prime space however thanks to its in depth positioning it feels a little smaller than what it actually is. It’s a fully integrated Audio / Video / Reverse Cam / Navigation / Communication comprehensive Multimedia system. However, the catch is its not touch screen and in this time and age you will end up trying to press the buttons on the screen expecting it to work – a joystick type turning knob is provided where you usually reach out for your handbrake – this can fully navigate and control the complex COMAND interface (Mercedes nomenclature for the Display). The music system (Mercedes calls it Audio 20 CD) comes with a 6 speaker system - one of the best you will hear in the segment, excellent sound quality with USB, iPod, SD Card and DVD/CD console. Surprisingly even the radio quality is phenomenal, no wonder considering that Mercedes claims in its manual that it uses either a Harman Kardon or Bang and Olufsen.

Below the display system, there are quick navigation buttons to access GPS, Dial the mobile connected or use the multimedia function like audio/video. Below this lies the console hosting Eco button to activate a start stop system, hazard light switch, Rear Seat Head rest and Sun Blind controller and the front bumper sensor disarming button. The bottom most panel is for controlling the front dual zone AC, temperature can be set individually and all the usual functions exist, the front AC vents look a million bucks, crafted to perfection with subtleties in design and aesthetic finish.

There are two functional cubby holes for holding the drinks neatly hidden under a sliding mechanism, also with a 12v charger and removable ash tray to store handy kick-knacks. The open-able central arm rest has a NASA spacecraft like design and opens from the centre with USB and iPod ports hidden neatly inside. Since there is no gear lever or handbrake, space is well utilized for storing handy items. Also the sport and eco mode button is placed here a bit strangely.

The parking brake is rather located below the right switch towards the right of the steering and it’s electric which could be disengaged by just a press of button - this for some reason is not the same as the A Class push pull type, for engaging the parking brake there is a separate lever in the foot well which needs engaging by your left feet. I found this mechanism a bit odd to start with, but adjusted to it in no time. There’s a lot of intelligence put in to release it automatically, it is also automatically engaged when the Hill Hold function brings the vehicle to a halt, the engine is switched off if the driver leaves the vehicle, bonnet is unlocked or the vehicle is still for a longer period of time. All in all it indeed does a lot of thinking for you.

The front seats are extremely plush and comforting, the driver's seat and backrest are electrically controlled using the controls in the door panel. Seat settings can be stored in 3 memory programs and we can have a choice of our position immediately reset, handy especially if there are multiple drivers in the family and you don't have to search for the best position every time, it also stores the ORVM position and steering position for every seat map. There are a plethora of settings available to make sure you find the royal and most comfortable position. Four way lumbar support is an optional accessory provided in the front seats to inflate and deflate the air cushions, worked like a breeze. The front-passenger mirror moves automatically downwards when reverse is engaged for an easy side view rearwards. There is 3 zone Thermotronic climate control system each for the driver, front passenger and rear passengers, each with individual climate control and various modes like Diffuse, Focus and Medium, worked perfectly well.

The rear seats are very comfortable as well and can easily seat 2 adults - thanks to a rather large central transmission hump the middle passenger in the rear will never be as comfortable. Though for the segment this happening is highly unlikely. Thigh support is decent and average and leg room is more than adequate even with a tall driver up front. Separate AC vents at the rear make sure chilling in the rear is more than sufficient. Ingress and egress is fairly standard and things are ergonomically laid out. There is a fold down centre arm rest in the rear seat with 2 integrated cup holders. Both rear side windows come with a manually retractable sun blind and also the rear glass has an electronically operated sun blind. There is a dual section panoramic sunroof with sun blinds as well. There are 4 AC vents apart from the under seat ones, 2 hosted on the door pillars and 2 on the centre with settings available to control rear temperature independently. There is also a 12v charging point available within.

The E Class has a whopping boot space of 540 liters; it’s deep and largely flat. A space saver tyre is neatly placed underneath the booth space.

Re: Mercedes Benz E-Class (E250 CDi): Performance and Handling

IMG_1953.jpg

The new E Class, comes with three engine options:
  • A 1991cc 4 cylinder in line petrol delivering 184BHP with torque rated at 300Nm @ 1200 - 4000
  • A 2143cc 4 cylinder turbocharged diesel delivering a 204BHP with torque rated at a whopping 500Nm @ 1600 - 1800
  • And a hold your pants version (An E63AMG version 5461cc V8 Petrol delivering err 557BHP with torque rated at 720Nm @ 1750 - 5250)
We tested the E250CDI with the 2.143 litre diesel. This engine came out as an absolute revelation in the review, probably for me the most impressive aspect or USP of the car. Its immensely refined and powerful, with the power delivery very seamless and linear. As usual Mercedes uses piezo injectors for precise millisecond accuracy in fuel injection leading to more efficient, less polluting silent engines. It also employs 2 Lancaster Balancer shafts to specifically iron out those secondary engine vibrations giving it an impeccable NVH. Sitting inside you cannot tell its a diesel unless you rev it hard and then it shows its meaty/grunty nature and not to mention abundance of torque.

It’s coupled with an 80 liter fuel tank hence offering a very long range. Coupled with a 7 speed 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission as standard the transmission is controlled using the DIRECT SELECT lever, while the driver can manually inflict gear changes using the steering-wheel shift paddles as well. The gearing and power delivery is phenomenal, no lag whatsoever.

There are two options E and Sport. The Economy options works well for all practical purposes, the Sport option is to wake up the devil and mind you this S mode is a true S mode and not the one which simply revs to red line, this actually makes you go the fastest, the acceleration push is phenomenal and it could do a 0-100 Kmph in 7.5 seconds. The engine grunt and torque in the Sport mode is astonishing. Push hard and you will hear the muted roar of the lion under the hood. The ear modes are clever you can use the paddle shift in any mode really (E as well as S) and it temporarily goes in to manual mode and then reverts back to the original mode. There is hence no explicit M mode given. The gearbox is very smooth and responsive.

New-Mercedes-Benz-E250_7.jpg

Noise, Vibration and Harshness levels are very impressive for a diesel and at idle you can’t hear the engine from inside. It’s totally refined and only when you are using the sport mode aggressively, you can hear a roaring lion under the hood. The engine comes with a start stop system which can be activated from the front console or switched off as needed. What it does basically is switches off the engine at the signals for you as soon as you stop at a signal with your foot on the brake pedal or when HOLD is activated. The moment you release the foot or in case of HOLD the moment you touch the accelerator pedal the engine fires up. This feature astounded us with its speed in the A class but the speed is equally matched with a diesel as well - it’s quite simply lighting fast showing how well the diesel engine is tuned.

The direct steering is precise and taut. It’s plush to feel and joy to operate, big in size as well and moderately balanced. I found it under-steering slightly though, it required a tad bit more turn than what you would usually expect. The adaptive brakes are immense though not much as the A class I would admit which to me is a benchmark in braking physics. This one thanks to its proportions and tune up feels more adaptive in nature, it works in tandem with the pressure applied on the pedal - this could catch you out if you expect it to work linearly, its not linear. The usual Mercedes BAS (Brake Assist) works well and is integrated with ESP; Sensors continuously monitor the pressure on the brake pedal and control the brake boosting functions.

The brake liners start thinking and priming the moment you start leaving the accelerator pedal saving you costly milliseconds. This is not all even the brake lights are adaptive depending on the speed the vehicle is travelling and the pressure/velocity on the brake pedal. A HOLD function can also be optionally manually activated by simply tapping the brake pedal twice. If the vehicle detects emergency situation pattern it starts flashing the rear red led flash lights automatically and even puts the hazard lights on once the vehicle comes to a stop - of-course all of this when certain critical conditions are met. All in all a very well thought out comprehensive system.

Ride quality is really good for a Mercedes Benz, while suspension travel is limited and it is surely tuned for Indian conditions. Mercedes calls this "The DIRECT CONTROL" suspension with selective damping combines both agility and ride comfort. The suspensions adjust automatically to the driving situation and damping in bad roads is very impressive. We took the E class to roads it’s not meant to be driven on, but surprisingly ground clearance issues apart, this fared really well - so it scores high on comfort.

Ground clearance however is a cause of concern, any large speed breaker and you will end up scratching the underbelly of your prized possession. We tested the E Class at high speeds as well and the suspension tune up for Indian conditions has had a slight effect on high speed dynamics, we could feel it bobbing sideways like a boat at high speed slightly undulated roads - this is off-course at very high speeds and not really a cause for concern.

To summarize look at the image below, at 100kmph, the engine is barely doing 1500 RPM. That tells you a lot about the levels of engine refinement.

Re: Mercedes Benz E-Class (E250 CDi): Safety, Fuel Efficiency and Verdict

New-Mercedes-Benz-E250_159.jpg

As is expected the E Class comes with 5 star Euro NCAP Rating, a cocoon of 8 air bags system as standard, in this article we will try and explain the way Mercedes sees safety.

Safety in Mercedes lingo is defined in 4 phases:

Phase 1: Safe Driving
  • Adaptive High Beam Assist
  • Active Parking assist including Parktronic
  • ABS
  • ASR(Acceleration skid control)
  • Attention assist
  • Brake Assist (BAS)
  • Adaptive braking with HOLD system
  • ESP
  • Intelligent Light System
Phase 2: In Critical Situations
  • PRESAFE Occupant protection system:- This collects a lot of sensor data and automatically works with seat belt tensioners, front seat positions, sunroof and windows etc.

New-Mercedes-Benz-E250_137.jpg

Phase 3: In an accident
  • 8 Airbags as standard including a staged airbag deployment depending upon the impact intensity.
  • An active Bonnet system
  • NECKPRO Head restraint system
Phase 4 : After an accident

Typical Safety systems like door unlocking, automatic flashing lights, Engine fuel cut off, Automatic emergency calling.

All of the above apart the Mercedes also has Hill start assist, Attention Assist, Front and Rear Sensors + Rear Camera, Tyre Pressure Loss warning system, ISOFIX child seat anchorage system etc. Despite our intense test schedule we found this Mercedes immensely fuel efficient with the worst FE around 9kmpl and anything hovering up to even 13-14 Kmpl. For the size and category this is impressive.

The E Class comes loaded with the frills, is safe and forms a great executive option. At 40.73 Lakhs for petrol and 43.65 Lakhs starting for Diesel, it isn't exactly cheap. It could be a few lakhs lower is our view (though this segment buyers would be brand conscious than worry for a couple of lakhs). The new look is refreshing and dynamic but retains the classy "E Class" DNA. The appeal factor to the urban corporate executive is high; the performance for the diesel is phenomenal. However, competition is at its highest with the likes of 5 series from BMW, A6 from Audi and the Volvo S80. As usual it will be interesting to see how this market performs. The traditional Audi, BMW, Mercedes juggernaut will continue. Mercedes is on a high in 2013 with a slew of models launched and looking to regain the numero uno position.

Re: Mercedes Benz E-Class (E250 CDi): Likes, Dislikes and Star Ratings

New-Mercedes-Benz-E250_57.jpg

You'll Love: [thumbsup]
  • A premium long wheel base sedan that oozes style in every inch.
  • Good suspension setup. Tuned to suit Indian conditions well if compared to rivals.
  • Loaded with long list of safety features (5 star EuroNCAP rating) and immensely spacious / cavernous interiors.
  • Exceptional quality levels. Typical E Class Mercedes Benz - High on features and plush interiors with a 3 zone ACC.
  • Extremely refined and Efficient Diesel engine equipped with a brilliant 7 speed auto-box - Great performance and impressive torque as well.

You'll Loathe: [thumbsdown]
  • Price tag is on a relatively higher side for what it offers.
  • The car under-steers at fast corners, not a very big deal but could have a slightly better steering setup.
  • Ground clearance is poor for Indian road conditions(no surprises here, its part of the standard package and the long wheelbase adds to the woes).
  • Lack of touch screen facility would make the COMAND interface cumbersome to operate for a few.
  • The rear seat can comfortably accommodate only two adults thanks to the big transmission hump.

  • There exists an automatic brake drying function when wipers are used continuously, the driver doesn't even detect it.
Suggestions To Mercedes Benz For E-Class:
  • Improve the ground clearance slightly for Indian conditions.
  • COMAND Interface should be touch screen. This is a 40 Lakh plus car.
  • High Speed Handling and Steering could be marginally better.
  • Base equipment can be further improved or instead pricing could be even more competitive.
  • Larger ORVMs are absolutely essential in Indian Road conditions

Similar adjustments for the front passenger seats as well

Both front seats have a small open able handy space underneath

Notice the extra pedal just over the dead pedal location, that's for engaging the parking brake. Its not very ergonomic to operate.

Quality of leather used in the interior is top notch

Re: Mercedes Benz E-Class (E250 CDi): Pictorial Review

Settings in the MID and MID views - plethora of options and every possible data shown

Horn pad did feel a bit stiff - typical Mercedes trait we noted in the A class as well

Left side buttons on the steering to largely navigate the MID

Left side controls for the connected phone, muting the audio system and initiating voice commands, notice the paddle shift controls just behind the steering

Slide able compartment in the center console to hold 2 large bottles, ashtray and a 12v socket. Push Slide feels premium.

Audio, Phone Controls and Navigation , the last row is to operate the rear sunblind, rear headrest, Start Stop and Parking sensors electronically

Premium looking and finished AC vents

Open able center arm rest - opens from the middle and looks like a NASA space craft inspired design

USB and IPhone connectivity neatly tucked within the front central arm rest

Passenger side IRVM - I found them puny for the size of this vehicle, width of the vision is limited

Cruise Control and Speed Limit setting stalk, notice the small stalk beyond which is to electronically adjust the steering settings

Wiper stalk with the turn indicators and low-hi beam controls

Rear Row Reading lamps , reminds me of the E.T. face

Front sensor display shows how you are doing corresponding to neighborhood traffic, in the E class we found the response times for the LEDs slightly more than the A class

It changes to red when the distance is next to nothing and also gives an audible alert

Rear sensors likewise, can be neatly and clearly seen from the IRVM

Both passenger and driver visors are lighted with big mirrors

A executive analog clock upfront, notice the bezel finish on the AC duct controller - immaculate

The trademark Mercedes COMAND Interface which we explained in detail with the A Class review - this one is exactly the same. The below image displaying a fuel consumption graph.

IRVM and front reading lamps along with the panoramic roof controllers

As plush as plush can be, notice the sun roof has kind of two sections

Plush Rear lounge as well with center arm rest and cup holders.

Central AC Vents with independent ACC zone for the rear passengers

Roof Handles for the rear seat passengers along with a coat hook

Leg room more than adequate in the rear, central transmission hump though is quite big inconveniencing middle passenger if any

Notice the electronic sunblind at the rear glass, its fully retracts

Door Pillars have AC vents as well, plenty of AC vents for rear occupants and it cools in a flash

Manually retractable sun blinds for the rear side windows as well

Sun Blinds for the panoramic roof as well

Sunroof however fully opens however only on the front side of the car

Airbags in the C Pillar (part of overall 8 airbags)

Rear Doors have the elementary child locks

540 liters of Boot space

Side panels in the boot with access to the rear LED panel

Space saver spare tire neatly located under the boot floor alongside the battery

Internal Ambient Lightening views , its gorgeous and there are some configurable options like polar and solar to choose the theme per your mood

Polar theme can be selected for ambient lighting and it gives an ice blue tinge across the doors

MID view at Night

Some night shots for viewing pleasure

Illuminated rear number plate with the camera hidden neatly, there is also a manual boot unlock option tucked neatly underneath

Low and High Beam Views

Lights at night

Rear LED show

The illuminated 3 pointed star

Typical Mercedes Benz Keys, it hosts a manual key inside it just in case batteries go kaput

To get a perspective of Size, the Swift Dzire feels half the size of the E class

This is another interior shade in a walnut brown kind of texture. This is for people who are fond of wooden finish.

The test car had to struggle on some bad roads. It performed surprisingly well considering its purpose of build.
