For half engine replacement there is no such formalities IMO. We got the half engine replaced in our Wagon-R (around 7-8 years back) and no such formalities were done.

Half engine comes with no engine number stamped, you need to stamp your engine number and need to update pencil embossed diagram with RTO.

I am really surprised with the above responses. Members who are thinking that they need no formalities for engine number change, please go and check your RC book, and see if it has a place for ENGINE NUMBER or not. It is there for a purpose, and it does serve one.
Dear aditya, as stated in Shashi's reply, the engine number is stamped on the engine block just above the oil pan, to be precise, on the back side of the block (below the rear engine mounting).
And when you will change the half engine, you will get a block with new engine number which needs to be changed in your old RC.
For that, you have to give an application to the relevant RTO with the original bill of the new engine and he will endorse the engine number into your RC.
Driving a car with different engine number on paper and different inside is illegal and denotes theft. So choose your options carefully.
All the best.!

Hi all,
I own a Maruti 800 1998 STD. Have posted a review here:http://http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/forums/ownership-reviews/27830-my-life-1998-maruti-800-std-new-post.html
I was thinking about a half engine change of my car. Somebody told me that there are some RTO formalities that have to be completed after the change. I tried to search but could not get a suitable explanation.

Could someone explain this?

Regards,
Aditya
