Renault-Nissan plans to boost sales in India over the coming months by introducing new models based on the same platform. The company doesn’t care about sales cannibalisation amongst its own brands as long as overall sales increase. This is the reason why we see a Renault badged Micra (Pulse) and Sunny (Scala). So the obvious question that arose was when would Nissan rebadge the Duster? The company had earlier considered the Juke for India, but being a 4-seater, it did not meet the requirements set forward by the company.

We had a brief talk with the top management of Nissan India who told us their next focus would be on the compact SUV segment. The company has looked at the alternatives and is already working on the Nissan branded Duster. The vehicle will have slightly different styling along with more features and will be priced higher than the Renault Duster. The Nissan branded Duster will be launched in 2013. Unlike the Renault Duster, Nissan is seriously working towards a 7-seater version of this crossover.

The Renault Duster is currently available in two diesel engine options and a petrol engine option. The diesel variants are powered by the renowned 1500cc K9K series of engines producing 85 and 110 PS respectively. The petrol is powered by a 1.6-litre K4M motor which produces 104 PS of peak power. The Duster range currently starts at Rs 7.19 Lakhs (Ex Delhi). The Duster has already roped in 10000 bookings, which shows the demand for such a kind of a vehicle, thus Nissan cannot ignore such a segment.

Sometimes I wonder if the carmakers are running out of originality. The initial trend was to make sedans out of hatchbacks. Now we simply have same car swapped with another logo. It might be beneficial from business point of view, but as a buyer, I care least about it. Two brands revolving around the same models for almost complete product range is something that I disapprove of.

Re: Nissan To Launch Rebranded Duster in 2013

i do not understand why nissan is trying to ruin its name by doing the brand sharing. they could have have brought a qashqai and priced it a bit expensive by the duster prices.

i feel nissan missed an opportunity.

Nissan may develop a new compact SUV on Renault Duster platform

The Japanese automobile major Nissan may develop a compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) based on alliance partner Renault’s Duster platform, a model which has already amassed over 10,000 bookings in just the first month of launch.
Accoridng to a report in The Business Line, Japanese carmaker is now looking to become a mass player in India with a complete car portfolio with midsize sedans and the SUV segment is expected to be a major focus area. The report quoted Takayuki Ishida, MD and CEO of Nissan Motor India as saying “We’re interested in the SUV market, and we need to have a good product. Globally, we have a lot of choice. But to arrive at a good price range, we would need to localise. Using the Duster platform is one of the options we are looking at.”

It was reported that Nissan currently sells the premium ‘X-Trail’ in the SUV segment, prices of which start at Rs 22.6 lakh. But, the interest in cheaper, compact SUVs is highlighted by the fact that UV sales have grown 54 per cent to 1.62 lakh units between April and July this year. To expand the UV range, the company will launch the ‘Evalia’ MPV by late September. After the Micra and Sunny, this will be the third to be manufactured at the Chennai alliance plant and the sixth model in its local portfolio.

According to the report, re-badging, or using same vehicle platforms across Group companies is not new for the Renault-Nissan alliance as it leads to considerable cost savings in product development. Common components and engine sharing creates a larger scale of manufacturing, leading to lower cost of production per vehicle and helping the company price products more competitively. In the domestic market, Renault has already re-badged Nissan’s Micra hatch with minor modifications under the Pulse brand. Soon, Renault will also launch the ‘Scala’ sedan, which is basically a Sunny with minor design changes, it was reported.

Re: Renault Duster Now Launched at Rs.7.19 Lakh (Coverage – Pg.20)

Was just wondering if there is any chance of a 'Nissan Duster' ?

The Renault Duster has proven to be a huge success in the Indian market, with about 10,000 bookings on the month of its launch. Re-badging across group companies is not new for the industry and Renault-Nissan alliance also has similar offerings in the market. The hatchback Nissan Micra was launched as the Renault Pulse and similarly the Nissan Sunny got minor design changes and was launched as the Renault Scala. So do u think this could be Nissan's next offering?

If Nissan can position the re badged Duster in a lower price point, it will make things tough for Mahindra Quanto.

Front end looks way better than Renault Duster. Nissan Duster can sell much more than Renault if it is sold for a price tag of 6.5 Lacs [:)]

Heard a news on TV that Renault will not provide the Duster to Nissan.
Hate to say this but a manufaturer proves itself to be lame and handicapped to rebadge and sell same car in same locality. It will create a distress among owners.
Something like a premium and a grey market stuff. I believe in long run it would prove detrimental to overall Image.
