After having introduced the innovative concept In Germany and other global markets, the leading international automotive supplier Continental today unveiled its concept ‘Simplify your Drive (SyD)’, customized specially for the Indian market. At the push of a button, Simplify your Drive provides access to a range of vehicle characteristics thus enabling car owners to change the settings of their vehicle by switching between different preconfigured driving profiles. Most modern vehicles in India are equipped with electronics that are capable of delivering much more functionality than the average driver uses today. The more features modern cars have, the larger the number of individual configuration options. With its deep understanding about the Indian automotive market and consumer behavior, Continental now provides vehicle manufacturers with a powerful tool to harness this opportunity.
SyD allows the end user to experience multiple cars at the price of one. For the prototype demonstration vehicle, three configurations have been developed - ‘Work’, ‘Play’ and ‘Home’. Users can switch between modes at the touch of a button. The look and feel of the interior including the display; engine and transmission settings, infotainment and comfort systems will adapt to suit the selected driving profile. The free programmable instrument cluster will let the driver view information that is most relevant according to the driving profile. For example, in ‘work mode’ the primary focal point is the rear of the car, assuming the car is chauffeur driven, with the owner seated in the back. The ‘play mode’ can be selected when the car is owner driven and the focus shifts to the driver’s seat. Based on key-identification, the ‘home mode‘ is customized based on whether the car is owner or chauffer driven. The zones of the car change from a right-left conditioning of the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), to a front-rear focus, based on where the owner is seated. Audio focus and output are also adjusted accordingly.

When the concept is ready for volume production, vehicle manufacturers will be able to store their own special settings in the vehicle according to the driving profiles. Tejas Desai, Head of Interior Electronics Solutions (IES), Continental Automotive India said, “SyD India will help vehicle manufacturers in the country to adapt their vehicles to their target groups even better and reduce the number of compromises required during the course of vehicle development. After all, every car owner has distinct preferences. To cater to varying needs, manufacturers today are compelled to produce multiple models and variants per model. SyD India has the potential to simplify this business model and be a game changer in the industry.”

Speaking about the launch Claude d’Gamarose, Managing Director of Continental India, said, “Our localisation strategy is the key to our growth and success in emerging markets. Continental has been working closely with Indian OEMs for many decades and has deep understanding of market requirements. While most of our localisation has been targeted at the mass market, SyD India will address a different segment altogether, offering localisation that facilitates the introduction of advanced technologies in the Indian luxury car segment.”
