The draft proposal says the national authority on vehicle regulation and road safety can order mandatory recall of vehicles if it receives 100 or more complaints about a particular defect in any vehicle model which could cause harm to occupants or road users.
It also specifies that manufacturers whose vehicles are subject to a recall order would have to compensate buyers for the full value of the vehicle or replace or repair the defective vehicle with another vehicle of similar or better specifications
Government sources said the automobile lobby wants this proposal to be dropped and continuation of the present mechanism of "voluntary recall".
