The Datsun nameplate may soon be revived by Nissan Motor Co. as a low-cost sub-brand for emerging markets such as Russia and India. The Japanese carmaker plans to relaunch Datsun in 2014 and initially start selling the cars in Russia, India and Indonesia, Japan's Nikkei business daily reported. The vehicles will be priced around 500,000 yen ($6,100), it said.

Nissan declined to comment on the report. A focus on expanding sales in emerging markets is a key pillar of Nissan's mid-term business plan. It aims to make countries such as India, Brazil, China and Russia account for 60 percent of its global sales by 2016, from 40 percent in 2007. It also has ambitious goals for expanding market share in emerging markets. Many of the upcoming Datsuns are expected to ride on Nissan's global V-platform for low-cost small cars and source most of their parts locally, the Nikkei said in its report on Thursday. But in Russia, Nissan will use platforms supplied by its local partner AvtoVaz.

Nissan targets global volume of 300,000 units a year for Datsun, the Nikkei said. While announcing its mid-year business pan in June 2011, Nissan said that by 2016, it will increase the number of models using its V-platform to three from two now. It also aims to boost global V-platform sales to 1 million units, from 130,000 in 2010. In the United States, the Datsun name was dumped in favor of Nissan in 1983. The move was meant to strengthen Nissan's global corporate image. Dealers initially rebelled against the idea of dropping Datsun. But three decades later, a whole generation of Americans has grown up never knowing the brand. (Source)

Re: Nissan Considering Bringing Datsun Brand To India

Nissan is doing fairly well with its small car Micra in India. Personally I feel that even though they have a premium image in the country but sometimes having it works out better in the smaller car segments. It will be interesting to see how Nissan would re-establish and challenge other manufacturers with now unknown, Datsun brand that was made defunct almost three decades ago in light to provide focus to “Nissan” brand as a whole.

Re: Nissan Considering Bringing Datsun Brand To India

Hi, nissan may also bring nano rival under datsun brand.

“We’re talking about a range of cars that would provide a value-for-money opportunity in several segments. I won’t use the word cheap, as the customers won’t want a cheap car, but they will want value for money, which means quality and good design that they can afford. If you look at the number of people on bikes who want to move to move up to a car, the possibilities are enormous. But at the moment there is very little on offer,” Andy Palmer, executive VP, Renault-Nissan, said.

Datsun brand to boost Nissan sales in India, Indonesia and Russia by 2016

By 2016, one-third to half of Nissan Motor Company’s sales in India, Indonesia and Russia will be under the Datsun badge, its program director confirmed. Speaking exclusively to Autocar Professional, Ashwani Gupta, program director, Control Corporate Plan Group, Datsun Business Unit (pictured), said that the brand will enter India with two products in each market in 2014 and will introduce another product “within three years.” Emphasising that Datsun’s representation in India will be that of “Global brand, local product,” Gupta established that the company is working on “unique platforms.”

Asked if the company is looking to make India a sourcing hub for its global markets, Gupta said, “Initially, we will look to cater to the domestic market. But if the requirements and aspirations of customers in India, Africa and the Middle-East are the same, we will definitely look at exporting from Chennai.”

Datsun will share manufacturing space with Renault-Nissan at the alliance’s manufacturing facility in Oragadam, near Chennai. The plant, at present, has a capacity to produce 400,000 cars per year. Marc Nassif, MD, Renault India, had hinted in July this year that the company will definitely ramp up capacity, based on demand. The plant currently exports the Nissan Micra hatchback, Nissan Sunny saloon and the Renault Duster SUV.

Re: Nissan Considering to Bring Datsun Brand To India

Renault-Nissan working on three Datsun models in Chennai

Car 1 – Datsun I2

The talks of this ‘A Entry’ car started in early 2012 when Renault expressed its interest in developing a sub-Pulse (a re-badged Nissan Micra for our international audience). This car is expected to be priced around 2.5-3.5 lakhs.

Our sources close to the proceedings say that the benchmarking process for the I2 has been completed and the project graduated to the second stage of development. The I2 will carry the Datsun badge and is reportedly benchmarked against cars like Maruti Alto, Tata Indica eV2 and Tata Nano leading us to believe that the I2 will be positioned to take on these products, that said the car won’t start a price war with the Nano.

Car 2 – Datsun K2

The second model codenamed as K2 and is a compact and stylish hatchback based on the V-Platform. The K2 is likely to come out before the I2 and real world testing is likely to start in mid-2013. It will use the same 1.2-liter petrol engine featured in the Micra. The company can downsize the 1.5-liter K9K diesel engine to fit smaller cars. However we aren’t sure what the company has in store. As diesel is going to be a big part of any segment in the coming years, a compact engine has to be on the to-do list of Renault-Nissan’s foundry.

Car 3 – Datsun K2 7 seater

A few industry sources tell us that the company will work full time on the third model shortly after the first two cars are in the final development stage. The K2 will be extended with seating capacity for four adults and two children. The thinking is similar to the Indica series of cars that come in a host of body styles and wheelbases.
Taking a leaf out of Tata’s book, Datsun could slip in child two seats behind the second row or have benches facing each other like in passenger van. The running gear will be the same. This is a sort of family van in the footprint of a B Segment hatchback.
Renault wants to offset the slump of the European markets by working extensively in the emerging markets. Renault expects half its sales for this year to be outside Europe and this trend to continue in the coming years.

Re: Nissan Considering to Bring Datsun Brand To India

Datsun to be priced less than Rs 4 lakh

Japanese car maker Nissan will launch its Datsun brand in the sub- Rs 4 lakh range in India, the segment that has the maximum number of customers in a price conscious nation, the Economic Times reported.

“This segment has very aspirational customers whose expectations could be even higher than those buying Rs 20-lakh cars, ranging from styling, space and performance, to quality,” said Vincent Cobee, the corporate vice-president, Datsun Business unit, Nissan Motor in the report.

Datsun is to be launched by 2014.

India has emerged as a global small car hub as automakers focus on introducing cars targeting price-conscious consumers in the country. This segment has also the highest competition of cars such as Tata Motors Nano, Hyundai’s Eon, General Motors Spark and Maruti Alto 800 from Maruti Suzuki. In fact, Maruti that has majority share in the Indian car market due to its small car has forced its parent Suzuki to focus on India at the cost of the market in the United States. French car maker Renault is working with Nissan to build a small car for emerging markets and expects it to be launched next year.

“We are trying to find a right recipe for a low-cost product with right dose of modernity to build vehicles and bring customers at the right level of satisfaction. Datsun is a marquee automobile brand and it should roll out by 2013-14,” said Cobee in the interview.

Nissan’s Datsuns Will Share Lada Platform

Nissan’s executive vice president Colin Dodge announced that the low-cost Datsun vehicles will be based on the Lada platform.
“Datsuns will be built off the new Lada Kalina platform,” Dodge, who is Nissan’s top executive for Europe, told Automotive News Europe.
Dodge added that the Datsun cars will use the same steering mechanicals, braking and fuel systems as the Lada vehicles, but that there will be a difference in the cars’ design. Nissan plans to sell the Datsun brand in Russia, Indonesia and India beginning with 2014, and it considers the brand a central piece in its plan to expand in emerging markets.
“The upper body and interior will be completely different, You won’t notice it as a Lada,” said Dodge.
Head of Datsun Vincent Cobee said that the automaker will introduce two models during in 2014 and a third one in 2015. The models will be unveiled at the end of 2013. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced earlier this month that the starting price for the Datsun vehicles will be $3,000 (2,300 euro), competing with the low-cost Chinese cars.

Re: Nissan Considering to Bring Datsun Brand To India

Nissan to spend Rs. 1,700 crore for manufacturing Datsun cars in India

Back in March 2012, Nissan announced plans to revive the Datsun brand for emerging markets such as India, Indonesia and Russia. The idea was to make cheap and cheerful cars for first time car buyers and used car buyers.

Nissan plans to invest over 1,500 crores in the existing Chennai plant to ramp up the capacity for manufacturing Datsun models expected here in 2014, according to a new media report.

Once the investment is accomplished, the Chennai plant’s capacity will increase from 400,000 units to 600,000 units a year. The new Datsun models that will come on the back of this investment will be priced in the range of 3 to 5 lakh rupees.
The Chennai plant started its operations in the March of 2010 with an initial investment of Rs 4,500 crore. Currently, the plant employs a sum total of 7,500 people directly and indirectly combined.

The report adds that Nissan plans to sell at least 16,000 units of the Datsun brand every month. With the fresh capacity in place, Nissan-Renault-Datsun plans to increase their market share in an auto market dominated by Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors. The strategy is that Datsun will sell locally designed cars, Nissan will retail its global portfolio, such as the Micra, Sunny, Slyphy, Evalia, while Renault models will be positioned at a slight premium to Nissan offerings.

The plant will also manufacture Nissan’s version of the Duster SUV expected by Diwali. The Chennai plant also exports various Nissan and Renault models to Europe from here.
