Skoda could not just resist playing with their Fabia. And this sure seems to be a clever way for an indirect price hike.

Absolutely Vibhor. This strategy would increase there sales but at the same time they have removed airbags from Ambiente model. That shows that in India people are less concerned about safety over features. Sad but true.

Hi, skoda has changed variants of laura also.

Skoda has quietly changed the variant nomenclature of the Laura. The company has now four variants on offer for the Laura, which start with the base Active, followed by the Ambition, Elegance and the top of the line L&K. The reason for the change in the variant name system could have been triggered at Volkswagen’s end who did not want buyers to get confused between the new Jetta and the Laura. The Classic and Ambiente variants have been discontinued. Skoda has also done some changes to the features of the car and removed certain equipment from the base model (like Airbag) to decrease the price marginally. The Elegance variant now gets more equipment such as 16-inch wheels and rear defogger but the price has not changed of the Elegance variant. source motorbeam.com

I think the govt should come out with some strict guidelines for variants. A set of 4 variants should be defined with the equipment levels clearly specified. Then the manufacturers can name them whatever they want but specify which variant it is as per the govt. nomenclature. Now the manufacturers try to confuse buyers.

Absolutely right and to add to that they (Govt.) should also ensure that basic safety features are part of an end product be it a basic one or top of the line. I liked Skoda earlier for giving airbags as default from base to top model. Though, they have changed the strategy because we Indian do not think that way.

How stupid we can be [;)].

Indeed we are stupid as we are obsessed with "kitna deti hai" (How much mileage). We the people of India are less concerned about safety and hence auto makers take us for a ride. Also the lack of Political will to make stringent laws is favoring these automakers.

15" were required for fabia, since 14" looked very small for huge fabia. At this price of elegance they should have added sunroof, projector headlights and parking sensors too.

True Amit. But earlier these features were there in Fabia and stripped down to minimize cost for the end customer. Moreover, not every customer would like the sunroof, projector headlights and parking sensors. For Skoda, Fabia is a car for the masses and not for enthusiast only.

Moreover, these can be installed later on as well.
