Maruti Suzuki, the country's top carmaker, sacked 12 more workers and resumed production at its Manesar plant on Tuesday afternoon, a day after work was halted due to a labour strife over signing of a 'good conduct bond'. "There has been some production activity and we should be able to scale up in next few days. We are not going to succumb to any pressure and would prefer to roll out cars on our own at the earliest ," chairman RC Bhargava said. All the sacked workers were trainee technicians while another 16 were suspended.

So far, 49 workers have been dismissed. Production had come to a halt on Monday morning after Maruti dismissed 21 employees on charges of sabotaging production and causing quality issues in vehicles being manufactured at the Manesar plant that can roll out 1,200 units a day. Workers were protesting after they were forced to sign a 'good conduct bond'. "Worker should try to look for solutions and come to us for negotiations and should not indulge in protest and hamper the manufacturing processes," Bhargava said. Company sources said operations had started in departments such as the welding and paint shops and press moving about 300 supervisors and workers onto the production lines. Assembling of cars would start in the next few days.

"We are on protest and there is no scope for full production at the plant. We are protesting and some solution can be reached only after Maruti Suzuki's management stops its illegal undertaking under the garb of new bond," said Shiv Kumar, the leader of the protesting workers. Meanwhile, other workers' unions in the Gurgaon-Manesar belt, dubbed as the country's largest automotive hub, held a late evening meeting to chalk out a strategy. "We are soliciting support of all workers in the area and have secured the support of representatives of over a dozen workers' unions. We are chalking out a strategy to broaden the stir and extend support to our fellow workers," said Suresh Gaur, president, Gurgaon union of All-India Trade Union Congress.

"The company has posted half a dozen senior executives teams in the factory which spent a lot of time streamlining processes and strengthening the quality production systems. This was in preparation for a ramp-up in the next few days. The company has been scouting for experienced and ITI-trained manpower in the Manesar belt. By late Tuesday , the seniors had identified over 200 people wanting to join on contract," a Maruti spokesperson said.

Re: New Swift Now Introduced at Rs.4.22 Lacs

The main reason for halting the production was due to the QC issues, where half finished product was passed QC.
So this made the Maruti to halt the process.
Its been said that the workers were behaving rudely inside the plant.
So all of them were asked to sign an agreement, which caused all these.

All this translates into just one thing: Even more waiting period for the new Swift and a suitable excuse for the delay![frustration]

This is really shocking. Not only the waiting will increase, but I will think twice before buying any product if the company is going through this turbulence.

Re: New Swift Now Introduced at Rs.4.22 Lacs

It seems there is no end in sight for MSIL. The backlog of Swift has reached to 80000 and Maruti has asked dealers to not to take any new orders for New Swift.

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Tuesday said it will not resume full-scale production at its Manesar plant till workers sign a 'good conduct bond', as demanded by the company to ensure there is no repeat of quality issues that have surfaced at the plant.
"We can't start full production till the workers are ready. They have to sign the bond," MSI Chairman R C Bhargava said on the sidelines of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association's (ACMA) annual convention.
He said the management has been speaking to the workers, but "outside elements continue to influence them".
"We would like to resolve this at the earliest, but the workers need to understand that good conduct is a must," he added.
Bhargava also said the company is willing to incur the current production loss, as "indisciplined workers inside the plant can cause a greater loss".
He said due to the problems at its plant in Manesar, Haryana, the company has stopped taking bookings for its Swift hatchback and the backlog of orders is well above 80,000 units now.

Yes. Booking count has reached more than 80000 now and MSIL has asked dealers to stop taking new orders.

Do you think it is as simple as that? what about Hundreds of people who earn bread and butter from MSIL?
We heard only what management said ,do we know grievance of workers?

Forcing for "good conduct" is next to slavery, like people train dogs to be vegetarian .

Exactly, but for long term its not good for any business. That's why Tata moved to sanand.I am not blaming people from Manesar. But these kind of news always came from manesar only most of the times. I had never heard any kind of strike news from other places. Whomsoever is guilty managers or workers after-all it is affecting 'their company' only. And its logical that they are going to suffer along with customers.

Faulty vehicle makers face action

Transport Ministry Plans To Slap 1 Lakh Fine On Each Defective Product

Dipak Kumar Dash TNN

New Delhi: The road transport and highways ministry is planning to formulate a stringent policy that will hold manufacturers accountable for making faulty vehicles. An expert committee appointed by the ministry has recommended slapping Rs 1 lakh fine on manufacturers for each faulty vehicle or a three-month jail term or both.

The ministry is working on amendments to Motor Vehicle Act. The ministry is under pressure amid a growing demand to formulate a policy on mandatory product recall like other developed nations.

Sources said new recommendations stipulate that in case a consumer finds manufacturing faults with engine or any other parts, s/he would be able to lodge a complaint with the state transport authority (STA). Consequently, experts would investigate the case and suggest action. Increasing complaints from consumers and rise in instances of recalls by manufacturers have called for new rules. The ministry will hold a meeting with stakeholders to discuss these issues next week. Last year, the government had proposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh on the manufacturers for each faulty vehicle and introduced a bill to set up National Road Safety and Traffic Management Board. However, the standing committee sent the bill back.

In India, companies like Maruti and Honda, have recalled particular batches of cars after detecting faults in some of their parts.

“The defective vehicles having defects are usually recalled under the product recall mechanism in other countries by the national road safety authority in case the manufacturers failed to voluntarily recall the defective vehicles. This mechanism has been created by the authorities to protect consumer interest,” said S P Singh of Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training.
