Skoda Auto India, a division of Volkswagen, aims to soon introduce a mini sports utility vehicle (SUV) for the domestic market, which will be priced below Rs. 10 lakh. The Skoda is the first premium brand to step in this category by bringing in a small SUV with such a small price tag.
This new product from Skoda is a straightaway challenge for the Indian auto companies that offer cheaper SUV’s in the market, like Mahindra & Mahindra’s Scorpio comes in a price range of Rs 7.43 lakh to Rs 12.39 lakh, while Tata Motors’ Safari Dicor costs between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 13 lakh.
Even the international auto brands will get a tough competition from the launch because companies such as Mitsubishi, Toyota, General Motors, Hyundai and Skoda sell SUVs in India which are priced above Rs 15 lakh. The introduction of all-new SUV from Skoda will craft tough time for luxury mid-sized sedan market as well, where Honda City, Volkswagen Vento and Hyundai Verna are among the top sellers.
The member of the board in charge of sales and marketing of Skoda Auto India Mr. Thomas Kuehl stated, “The SUV segment is not flourishing at that quick rate as it was expected. We must try and go down in the price level and thus we are looking forward to bring a product priced below Rs 10 lakh.”
Though the launch details are still not revealed but Mr. Kuehl further added, “We have over 25% share in the D segment with Superb and 16.5% share in the segment that has Laura. We are executing hard to increase our presence in the SUV category.”
