Mercedes-Benz is planning to launch its compact cars A-Class and B-Class in India by 2013. At around Rs. 15 lakh – Rs. 20 lakh, the Mercs would compete against the Volkswagen Beetle and Fiat 500 models.
Peter Alexander Trettin, president and CEO of Daimler’s Central/Eastern Europe, Africa & Asia regions, is reported to have said, “The new range of A and B-Class cars are currently under development and would be launched globally in 2013 along with India in the same year with Mercedes looking at developing right-hand-drive versions from the beginning.” Trettin added that these cars will have front-wheel architecture and will cost less than the C-Class, currently the cheapest model in Mercedes’ India lineup. Re: Mercedes Benz B-Class Indian Debut Now Officially Confirmed

spy pictures of the new Mercedes-Benz B-class being tested in Ahamadnagar, Maharashtra, sent by our alert reader Vishwajeet Sawant.

The B-class will be the first offering from Mercedes to sit on the new front-wheel drive (MFA) platform. This platform is used in the new A-class, and will also see duty in the upcoming A-class based saloon and a compact SUV as well.

At 4.3 metres long, the B-class is part- large hatch and part-mini-MPV. The interior packaging is good, so there will be ample space inside for five passengers. The dashboard borrows elements from the SLS AMG and the CLS, adding to the luxurious cabin ambience.

A 1.8-litre diesel and a new 1.6-litre turbo-petrol will power the B-class and the transmissions could include a seven-speed dual-clutch ’box. As part of the new Mercedes-Nissan alliance, the new B-Class could also come with the 1.5-litre K9K engine which is also seen in various Renault and Nissan models.

Mercedes will price the B-class at around Rs 18 lakh which will make it the most affordable Mercedes-Benz in India.

Looks like Merc has finally woken up from its slumber & raring to go in 2013 taking the fight to the competition. At 16-20lacs price range, it will be interesting to see if executive saloon buyers opt for the B or A class instead

The saloon buyers will no way opt for this car. This will be purchased by only those who have budget of about 18L but want to buy a Merc only, just for name sake. Buddy, Merc can't be enjoyed in anything below E Class. It is for this reason, the sales no. difference between C & E isn't that big either.

BTW, the maintenance cost for Merc are worth only if you buy a Merc, irrespective of model & class (saloon, SUV etc) above 35L.
Just compare the rates of accessories of C & E class. Stuff like door mats, door rails etc. cost the same. Mirror cost is almost same. When the car goes for paid servicing, the charge difference between two is also not big.

If you want best VFM in Merc, opt for bare minimum E Class, the higher the better.

The target audience for this car I feel will be the wifey, who generally prefer hatch. If hubby owns a big Merc, this is an ideal car for his wifey.

Hatch + Merc = Great ladies car. [:)]

Mercedes-Benz all set to enthral Indian audience this September with its B-Class

German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz has announced that the company is gearing up to launch its B-Class hatchback in September this year in the Indian auto market. With the launch of this car, the Indian market will get its first premium sports tourer. Post launch, B-Class will be the new entry-level model of Mercedes-Benz in the country. Though the company has not yet disclosed the price of this compact sports tourer, it is anticipated that the car will be offered with a tag ranging from Rs. 23 to 29 lacs.

After a host of concept versions of the B-Class, the company introduced the final production model at the 11th IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, which was organised in September 2011. According to Mercedes-Benz Development Chief Dr. Thomas Weber, “No model change in the history of Mercedes has seen so many new developments introduced in one fell swoop.”

Though there are no updates from the company’s stand regarding the technical specifications of the car, it is expected that the car will be offered in both diesel as well as petrol versions. The diesel variant of B-Class will hold a 1.6 litre powertrain, whereas its petrol version will boast of a 1.8 litre petrol motor. It is anticipated that the engines will be mated to a new 7G-DCT (seven speed dual clutch transmission) dual-clutch gearbox as well as a new manual transmission system.

Engines of the upcoming B-Class will be integrated with advanced technologies for maximum efficiency, smooth running and high tractive power even from low revs. Sustainability in the context of adhering to upcoming emissions standards and low weight will also be the defining features of the model. As far as safety features of B-Class are concerned, it is believed that the Indian version of the model will feature Lane Assist and Blind Spot, among others. With a drag-coefficient of 0.26, the B-Class claims to be the most aerodynamically efficient family car.

The B-Class offered by India's third largest luxury car manufacturer is quite similar to the C-Class in terms of length and offers ample space in its first and the second rows. As far as the basic looks are concerned, the car actually looks like a combination of a compact Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) and a large hatchback car, thus it is going to start a new segment altogether in the Indian car market. The boot of B-Class has loads of space, which will enable as many as five passengers to carry sufficient luggage on a weekend trip.

Though the Mercedes B-class is touted more as a grand tourer rather than a compact Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), it will go head to head against the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, which are compact SUVs priced below Rs. 25 lacs in India. Mercedes-Benz will use Completely Knock Down (CKD) kits as an easy way to route the car in the Indian auto market, helping the automaker to maintain its competitive price. Besides, the expansion of company’s manufacturing unit is also about to finish, which will enable the assembly of 20,000 units yearly. By the end of July 2012, the paint booth facility of Mercedes-Benz will be also ready to initiate its operations, thereby empowering the manufacturer to paint the model on its site.

Some of the pics collected from various sources. Point to see is the attention to the details given by Merc (as usual though). And I am sure that this will have length not less than that of Ertiga.

Re: Mercedes Benz B-Class Indian Debut Now Officially Confirmed

It seems that B-Class will arrive much earlier than our expectations. Mercedes Benz’s website says that it’s coming in next 3 Days. Mercedes B-Class also has its own Indian website (readytob.in) that simply mentions “Coming Soon”.
