Maruti Suzuki India sales for the month of August 2018 stands at 158,189 units. This when compared to sales during Aug 2017 (163,701), is a decline of 3.4%. The figures are inclusive of exports.

In the domestic market, where Maruti Suzuki launched an all new car last month, sales declined from 152,000 to 147,700. Thereby registering a decline of 2.8%. This is the second consecutive month where Maruti Suzuki India has posted a decline. Before that, the car maker was posting a double digit growth for many consecutive months.

The major reason for decline in sales is flood situation in many parts of the country. Apart from Kerala, there are many other states in the country which are battling floods as of today. The festive period of Onam is one of the biggest car buying season in Kerala. But due to floods, the festive period did not experience expected sales.

Speaking about segment wise sales, in the Mini segment (Alto, WagonR), Maruti posted 35,895 units sales as against 35,428 units sold in Aug 2017. In the Compact segment (Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno, Dzire, Tour S), Maruti sold 71,364 units as against 74,012 units. Take a look at the detailed figure below.

Maruti Suzuki Utility Vehicle segment (Gypsy, Ertiga, S-Cross, Vitara Brezza) too experienced a decline from 21,442 to 17,971 units. Ciaz sales experienced growth from 6,457 last year to 7,002 units in Aug 2018.

Maruti Suzuki India now looks forward to the launch of new Ertiga next month. This new car is expected to bring in added sales for the company during the festive period.

Maruti Dzire replaced by Maruti Alto – Top 10 cars sold in India for Aug 2018

Maruti Suzuki India continues to lead the list of top 10 cars sold for August 2018 as well. This time, instead of grabbing the top 5 spots, Maruti has gone ahead and grabbed all the top 6 spots. Hyundai has taken the next 3 slots, followed by Honda, in the last slot. On the top, it is the Maruti Alto, which replaces the Dzire. But overall sales this year, it is the Dzire which remains to be the best-selling car in India for 2018.

You may have seen their ads and may have come across their promotional and marketing campaigns. You may have formed your own perceptions about which car is the best in the Indian market. However, things may be a lot different in reality, as it all comes down to monthly sales figures. Below is the list of Top 10 Cars sold in India during August 2018.

1: Maruti Suzuki Alto bags the top spot with sales of 22,237 units. This is an improvement for Alto, as it was second in the list from April to July 2018. The top slot during these four months was taken by Maruti Dzire. Maruti Suzuki Alto had held the first position in March 2018 also.
2: At number 2 is Maruti Dzire with sales of 21,990 units. It is possible that growing popularity of Honda Amaze may be eating into the sales of Dzire, which may be responsible for its drop to second position.
3: With sales of 19,115 units, Maruti Swift takes the third position. Its sales are inching closer to that of Dzire and we may see some changes in this list in the coming months.
4: At number 4, it’s Maruti Nexa Baleno with sales of 17,713 units. Baleno is an important Nexa brand, as it contributes more than 60 per cent to Nexa’s total sales in the Indian market.
5: Maruti Wagon-R continues to be one of the most preferred cars, as it registers sales of 13,658 units. Wagon-R’s tallboy design has yet to find a formidable competitor in the Indian market. However, things may change in the future, as Hyundai is slated to launch the all-new Santro in the Indian market.
6: At number 6 is Maruti Brezza with sales of 13,271 units. Brezza has proved to be a big success for Maruti in the SUV segment, with sales rising consistently almost every month.
7: Hyundai Grand i10 retains the seventh spot with sales of 11,489 units.
8: At number 8 is Hyundai i20, which also retains its position with sales of 11,475 units.
9: Hyundai Creta, which is the most expensive car in the list – retains its 9th position with sales of 10,394 units.
10: At number 10 is Honda Amaze with sales of 9,644 units. Amaze has held this position in June, July as well.

An important thing to note is that even though some cars have changed positions, the list of top 10 bestselling cars in August remains the same, as it was in previous month. Maruti continues to be a dominant player.

Volkswagen, Skoda, Jeep, Fiat, Renault, Nissan – India car sales Aug 2018

August 2018 has been a tough month for automakers in India. The main reason for this was the devastating floods in Kerala, one of the biggest automobile markets in the country. To compound the situation even further, this occurred during the Onam, the biggest festival for the Keralites when auto sales are usually at their peak.

Nissan sales fell by 35% from 4,780 units sold in August 2017 to 3,108 units sold last month while sales of Skoda fell 24.3%. Skoda sales in August 2017 were at 1,756 units which dipped further to 1,330 units in August 2018
