Volkswagen has introduced an add-on warranty program for all their customers in India. This new program allows owners of Volkswagen India cars to avail warranty of upto 7 years or 1,25,000 kms, whichever is earlier.

This extended warranty is offered across all models on sale (New Polo, Vento, Tiguan and Passat) in India and is subject to terms of the vehicle being within 7 years from date of sale and an odometer reading of not over 1,25,000 kms.

The company is also offering customers the option of 1 year or 20,000 kms extended warranty on the expiry of this 7 year warranty period which will have to be done 30 days prior to warranty or at a maximum of 15 days after the warranty period has lapsed.

This extended warranty covers parts of the engine, components in manual and automatic DSG gearbox besides suspension and steering, braking system and fuel system and also covers diesel injection system, air conditioning and cooling system apart from electrical and oil seals.

Those customers selling their vehicles within the warranty period can have the balance warranty period transferred to the new owner though warranty cannot be transferred to any other vehicle. This give peace of mind to the new customer as well.

This new 7 years, 1,25,000 kms warranty being offered by Volkswagen is against the earlier warranty period of 2 years across all models which could be extended to the 3rd, 4th or 5th year. The warranty is exclusive to Polo, Vento, Tiguan and Passat models and to qualify for this warranty, vehicle will have to have undergone scheduled service at authorized service centers with proper record in service history logs. All repairs should have been carried out by authorized personnel only and the add-on warranty is not applicable on taxi or vehicles with commercial registration numbers.

This decision of Volkswagen to offer extended warranty period comes at a time when many automakers in India are offering 7 year extended warranty period as is also seen in many global markets. Other car brands who offer 7 yr warranty programs are Honda and Toyota. Buyers should keep in mind that after market modifications nullify the warranty period and they would have to comply with certain terms and conditions where extended warranty is concerned.

A good initiative by VW but as I felt, VW India has possibly gone on the back foot this year. Except the 1.0L Engine in the AMEO, VW hasn't launched a genuine new product. Passat launched last year in October as I remember. Why is it not working on launching new models in India when other brands have gone far ahead. Be it TML, Hyundai, Maruti and others, why is it not doing anything on this front? Understood that the EW will be of immense help to the buyers and present owners but look at the Polo & Vento, don't they look kind of old now?
