There are many scientific methods of determining quality of fuel and many of the fuel stations display the same as well. In such pumps, I believe consumers can request the test to be done in front of them as well. Personally, I haven't tried.
Following are some things I look for while choosing a pump:
1. Operated by oil companies, lorry owners association
2. Operated by big companies (whose primary business is not fuel pump)
3. Cleaner, busier, bigger ones - though little crowded, will get fresher fuel
>> Once finalized, use the same pump(s) every time - while in city. At Coimbatore, I fuel in NGP fuel station 9 out of 10 times, for close to 5 years and no complaints on quality. I get free nitrogen refill as well.. :). Other reputed ones in Coimbatore are Ramsons & Jaishree (Avinashi road), Shanthi & LGB (Trichy road). ABT in pollachi road also used to be good - somehow don't have same feeling now and hence avoid.
While in other locations, I Avoid:
1. Fueling in remote areas
2. Fuel stations with old pumps
