Global NCAP has announced the launch of a new award program called 'Safer Choice', the award will be presented to the new cars made in India that meet the highest levels of safety according to the NCAP ratings.

NCAP has not yet awarded a maximum 5-star to any Indian made mass market car yet. As of today, the highest NCAP rated cars in India include the Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Etios and Tata Zest - all three scoring 4 stars in the NCAP test (in terms of driver safety).

Global NCAP is now looking forward to bestowing the prestigious accolade of India’s first five star car and through the launch of the ‘Safer Choice’ Award, recognising the first automaker in India to achieve the very highest levels of safety.

To qualify for a Global NCAP ‘Safer Choice’ Award, a car model must achieve all of the following requirements:
1. The model must achieve a 5-star score for Adult Occupant Protection in accordance with the latest version of the Global NCAP New Market Test protocol.

2. The model must achieve at least a 4-star result in Child Occupant Protection in accordance with the latest version of the Global NCAP New Market Test protocol.

3. The model must offer Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and meet performance requirements according to United Nations Regulations UN13H, UN140 or GTR9. Where optional, ESC must be available on all the model variants, sold separately without any ‘bundling’ with other features, and as from 2 years onwards must be a standard fit to at least 20% of the sales volume in the country.

4. The model must meet Pedestrian Protection requirements according to United Nations Regulations UN127 or GTR9. which must be validated on market units at a Global NCAP designated testing laboratory.

5. Conformity with all of these requirements must be validated at a Global NCAP designated laboratory and by the provision of type approval certificates where applicable.
David Ward Global NCAP Secretary General said,
Launching our ‘Safer Choice’ Award is an important new development in our Safer Cars for India campaign. We very much look forward to the first automaker in India to achieve the accolade of five star ‘Safer Choice’ performance.”

FINALLY THE YEAR 2018 HAS THE MOST IMPORTANT INDIAN AWARD FOR CARS
Why so late in awarding the most important aspect of cars and passengers.
but its never too late, and i am very happy.
I hope this award will make the manufacturers aware and add more safety features in the mass selling products.
Eagerly awaiting the safest car on Indian roads 2018.

Re: Global NCAP announces the launch of ‘Safer Choice’ award

I think car manufacturers like Maruti, Datsun, Mahindra, TATA will get into another category of producing cars with less safety.

It might be strategy of some world renowned brand to showcase their car safety and on other side it will point some cars/brand with low quality.

I believe this is great idea to make understand the car manufacturer about safety of people. Now if the a particular car model/brand has to improve the safety then a cost will be incurred in that; hope that should not happen.

Compared to brands like Volkswagen, Ford, it is far easier for Maruti/Hyundai to give better safety features. Taking into consideration the amount of cars they are selling, adding safety features as stock would make far lesser impact in terms of costing, as compared to the slower selling brands.
For the global brands like VW, Ford, Skoda who are not selling high numbers here, they can try to keep costs low, by increasing the exports, and to bring in the Indian version's safety features on par with the export version. With higher numbers, the costs would come lower.

One of the main reason they are not having a focus on this, is the ignorance of the Indian car buyer. We have customers who prefer to go for a touch screen infotainment system, instead of airbags and ABS. When there is lesser demand for safety features, companies do find it difficult to sell these features at the higher cost. With many of the car buyers being those who are upgrading from two wheelers, even a bare basic car feels safe for them.
Only if the customers start ignoring the unsafe versions, will the manufacturers be forced to act upon it.
For this, we need increased awareness, and this award by NCAP , hopefully will help increase the awareness.

Breaking down the Global NCAP crash test

Over the past month, Global NCAP has released the results of three more models , namely the Renault Lodgy and Maruti Suzuki’s Swift and Vitara Brezza. While the results have reached far and wide (God bless the internet), a look at online forums and social media chatter also suggests there’s a lot of misinformation about the crash tests. So, it’s a time as good as any to break it right down.
