MSIL is working on a new SUV for the Indian market that will be positioned above the Maruti Vitara Brezza. The new Maruti SUV is at least a year away from launch, however.

The development of the new Maruti SUV was confirmed by RC Bhargava, chairman of Maruti Suzuki. Speaking to BloombergQuint, he said –

We will launch a bigger SUV. The one we have is under 4 metres. We will therefore be launching an SUV higher than 4 meters. But it will not happen immediately in the next couple of quarters or even a year. It will take us a little bit longer to launch the SUV.

Maruti currently has the S-Cross in the 4 m plus space. However, the company will be looking to bring a product with more conventional SUV proportions. The Suzuki Vitara seems to be a strong contender for the role of the new Maruti SUV. It has been spotted on Indian soil in the past.

In the UK, Suzuki offers the Vitara with 120 hp 1.6 L Petrol and 120 hp 1.6 L DDiS diesel engines both mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The petrol variant is also available with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Suzuki Vitara S is powered by a 1.4 L Boosterjet petrol producing 140 hp paired with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. It is equipped with Suzuki’s AllGrip 4-wheel drive system.

Re: New Maruti SUV coming in 2019

The planned new bigger SUV could most likely be Grand Vitara being offered in international markets. MSIL is looking to take on the XUV & Hexa segment with this one. I think giving anything lower than a 2.0 L Diesel Engine option with an AT won't be good. Also, in petrol if they re-tune the Kizashi 2.4 L engine to 2.0L then that can be a good option as well.

Fiat might supply 2.0 MJD , they already gave for Tata Q501/502
Else 1.6 MJD might make a comeback , S Cross price and looks were the problem not the engine

Toyota may also lend an engine otherwise

This is nothing new. Maruti Suzuki in late 2018/2019 will bring the Suzuki Vitara to India. Will have the 1.4l boosterjet engine.

Along with the Swift Sport the boosterjet makes sense. Grand Vitara is another program.

FIAT will supply 2.0 MJD to TATA as a part of TATA-FIAT JV

they both jointly producing 1.5L Revotorq engine , 2.0L MJD and cars like Nexon, compass and upcomming TATA's Q501/502.

and it would be suprise to us if TATA will to share their REVOTORQ260 engine with FIAT for their upcoming compact cars becausing investing on scaled down version of 1.6L MJD is not suppose to be good idea for a manufacture who already in production of TATA's powertrains.

Re: New Maruti SUV coming in 2019

WRONG
Fiat - Tata JV split happened long ago

Only the Ranjangaon plant is shared between them else there is nothing "JV" about it other than shared plant

1.5 Revtorq is a Tata developed engine

2.0 MJD is a Fiat engine thats licensed for use in Tata Q501/502 like 1.3 MJD in Tata, Maruti,Chevrolet and Premier Rio cars OR like 1.6 MJD in Maruti S Cross

Revtorq260 has nothing to do with Fiat, in fact Fiat has already localized 1.6 MJD for export of Jeep Compass 1.6 so using Tata stuff is just an expensive downgrade similar to why VAG (VW) didnt go ahead with Tata JV this year-

This is nothing new. Maruti Suzuki in late 2018/2019 will bring the Suzuki Vitara to India. Will have the 1.4l boosterjet engine.
Totally ruining the chances there if its going to have 1.4 BJT Engine because the segment they are eyeing with the Grand Vitara wouldn't really accept such a under-capacity engine comparing to the other choices. Instead of 1.4 BJT why not provide the new 1.5L engine which has been under consideration for their new launches for that matter? Also, giving a 1.4 L Petrol to Grand Vitara or 1.5 Diesel to it wont appeal to buyers as why would anyone even pay a single rupee premium if one may get the 1.5L engine in Brezza itself in future with AMT or CVT? Just look at the C-SUV segment where Vitara Brezza lost hands down to Eco Sport & Nexon presently on performance front. So, MSIL should keep these 1.4 & 1.5 L engines to run their Brezza and Ciaz but for Grand Vitara, to compete and sustain, a 2.0L Petrol & Diesel engines with a minimum of 5 speed AT or 6 Speed AT is needed.

Re: New Maruti SUV coming in 2019

There are 2 SUV's in discussion here.

1. Suzuki Vitara which will debut first - late 2018/ 2019... Boosterjet and Possible the 1.6MJD engine.

2. Grand Vitara - 2020 , possibly the Fiat 2.0l engine

Suzuki Vitara would definitely sit above the current Vitara Brezza so which means it would take on the likes of Hexa & XUV as presently MSIL has nothing to compete the Hexa or XUV. So, powering it with a 1.4 BJT or 1.6 Diesel wouldn't help the cause either and would rather be a wasted opportunity as I feel just like the Kizashi and Celerio Diesel. Coming to Grand Vitara, instead of delaying the launch further this perhaps is the right time to introduce the Grand Vitara with a 2.0L Diesel with AT box. As it is the Brezza is facing heat in it's segment so overall the SUV segment in India is seeing a lot of competition with many VFM and well groomed products on offer so perhaps its the right time for Grand Vitara. Yet, if MSIL introduces an already 2-3 year old design/model of Grand Vitara in India in say next 2 or 3 years still just like their stocks, that will fly high in sales because its a Maruti and not to be forgotten "India comes home in a Maruti".

Suzuki Vitara is the next SUV from MS and will take on Hyundai's Creta. Will come fully loaded in AT configuration .

New Grand Vitara is an all new design and will be another Global Product and will take on Mahindra's XUV, and will be a 7 seater.

So MSIL will still continue to clutter their portfolio and confuse the buyers with the choices. I am sure the Suzuki Vitara will be priced at premium over the Brezza and would enter the territory of XUV in terms of price then why would anyone buy that over an XUV? Seeing the pricing blunders from MSIL with regards to Ignis which in top spec diesel almost costs as much as Brezza, I wouldn't be surprised if MSIL follows same pattern with the Suzuki Vitara.

New Grand Vitara is an all new design and will be another Global Product and will take on Mahindra's XUV, and will be a 7 seater.
But all this as you told would happen in next 3 years maybe right! God Bless MSIL! Keep confusing the buyers and complicating the segments. If the competition demands a competitive product at present, then, presenting a product after maybe 3 years wouldn't serve any purpose. M&M and Tata wouldn't sit idle till then either. At one point we will see latest gen products from M&M and TML and there MSIL will provide a car with a old world charm.

Re: New Maruti SUV coming in 2019

Except Ignis offers AMT in its top spec and its 9.4L VS 11.6L for Brezza in manual
Also Ignis has Fixed Geometry Turbo whereas Brezza has Variable Geometry Turbo

Think of it as Zest VS Nexon VS Tigor except engines are completely different (diesels comparison)
^^ Nearly same price range for top spec diesel variant

Another example is Polo TDI VS Polo GT TDI VS Vento VS Ameo
^^ Same engines , different tuning and transmission choices

So I dont see why Maruti is cluttered, given nearly all its models sell well barring a few but no issues given the part sharing
Competition is nearly equally "cluttered"

Still better than Mahindra in this segment imho
Nuvosport VS Bolero VS TUV300 VS Xylo VS TUV300 Plus VS upcoming TUV500 VS Scorpio
^^ Sharing similar/Same engines and platforms amongst a few

Re: New Maruti SUV coming in 2019

Ive driven the Suzuki Vitara in Europe
Really miles ahead of Brezza even though it looks a bit similar

Should be a good rival to Creta

I do hope they upgrade the interiors though
