MSIL is working on a new SUV for the Indian market that will be positioned above the Maruti Vitara Brezza. The new Maruti SUV is at least a year away from launch, however.
The development of the new Maruti SUV was confirmed by RC Bhargava, chairman of Maruti Suzuki. Speaking to BloombergQuint, he said –
We will launch a bigger SUV. The one we have is under 4 metres. We will therefore be launching an SUV higher than 4 meters. But it will not happen immediately in the next couple of quarters or even a year. It will take us a little bit longer to launch the SUV.
Maruti currently has the S-Cross in the 4 m plus space. However, the company will be looking to bring a product with more conventional SUV proportions. The Suzuki Vitara seems to be a strong contender for the role of the new Maruti SUV. It has been spotted on Indian soil in the past.
In the UK, Suzuki offers the Vitara with 120 hp 1.6 L Petrol and 120 hp 1.6 L DDiS diesel engines both mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The petrol variant is also available with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Suzuki Vitara S is powered by a 1.4 L Boosterjet petrol producing 140 hp paired with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. It is equipped with Suzuki’s AllGrip 4-wheel drive system.
