The Tata Nano could get a new lease of life with an all-electric powertrain. Our sources tell us that an all-electric Nano is being developed with market introduction expected later this year. However, initially, the car will be launched only for the taxi segment. Currently, Ola and Bengaluru based Lithium cab service, the only two electric taxi providers in India, use the Mahindra e2o as an electric option. We expect the Nano EV to be superior to the Mahindra e2o, offering better performance and a longer range. Back in 2010, Tata Motors showcased a Nano EV concept at the Geneva motor show that came with a super-polymer lithium battery and promised a driving range of 160km per charge.

The carmaker has been concentrating on developing electric vehicle technology through its UK-based Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC) where it developed the Bolt EV and unveiled the Tiago EV last month.

The Tiago EV is powered by an 85kW motor, offers 200Nm torque and a range of around 100km.
AutoCar

Nano is a perfect car for being an EV- smart ,Automatic,Epas !
I wish
*The car comes in the same style as in the pic like the Europa
*some additional standard features like Airbags,ABS
*Fully digital instrument cluster at least like KWID .

Seems like it would be priced at around 5-6 Lakhs !

Can't imagine those [lol] 200NM motor on the light weight Nano (800-900 KG with additional batteries and reinforced structure)!

It will also eliminate the inherent NVH troubles of the 2CYL motor in the NANO-Bonus :P !

Meh, Nano and the Reva platforms are too outdated
TML and Mahindra should innovate , not take a step back this way
Make a proper electric offering without compromising on safety etc

These are baby steps taken by the auto OEMs, and rightly so, given the current infrastructure. Who wants to make an all new design and let it fail if the government does not fulfill its side of the electric promise ? Just a few days ago, a supposedly "power surplus" country was forced to attempt some load shedding in a "Smart city" called Pune.

I would be in queue if its priced < 5 laks for a 100Km range.
Hope it comes into market quickly and is priced sensibly (not like e2o).

So apparently if Maruti Alto 800,Renault Kwid, Hyundai Grand i10 can get all the hate in the forum regarding safety (which I completely agree with) but when it comes to Nano and the likes, suddenly its "baby steps" etc
Seems like double standards, unsafe cars are unsafe cars. There is no grey area with the Nano, its the one of most unsafe cars on our roads

Id say Tiago electric is a better move and anything lower is a terrible mistake
For one, 1st time car buyers are hardly gonna consider electric cars and that too plonking 4-5 big ones on a car like Nano would be sacrilegious
Instead, make hybrids like the Prius or go ahead with niche market products like Tesla which certainly has the envy in India too, there are already bookings for Tesla in Mumbai and they can most certainly afford a charging station or the likes of it or they will own other cars to overcome times when electric wont serve the purpose

This is Nano all over again

Don't write off NANO so soon. The design has the capacity to meet the upcoming crash test norms. Check out the video.

As far as TATA taking on Tesla that will be taken care with their Jaguar I pace.

First off, MIRA is an independent test facility and not an official test center. Second, the test was carried out in 2009 when norms were not as stringent as now. Third, and most important, the test Nano was modified extensively.Even airbag was added.
In addition to airbags, the front longitudinal structure is reinforced and a structure behind the bumper is added and on the firewall. Another structure is added to the front doors. All of these enhancements are added to the Body-in-White (BIW) on the assembly line for the base vehicle and add 18 kilograms weight to the BIW
.
There is a whole thread about this in other forums, if you are interested in learning about it.

Exactly my point was that the NANO could be upgraded to the newer crash test norms as shown. Also bharat Ncap mandates 56kmph offest impact test which the NANO is shown passing the test. The Euro Ncap today has moved on to 64kmph frontal offset impact test but thanks to lobbying by our monopoly manufacturer the bharat safety tests have been watered down to 56kmph which NANO is shown passing with flying colors.

Have seen the platform and know the modifications done on Nano EV?

And let me tell you Nano platform is still better(not outdated) than any of its rivals in India today (even one segment above) and it will be offered to the Taxi market as of now as per the reports. So, just wait for the update and then we can discuss whether it's safe or unsafe till then we should refrain from these kind of statements.

My larger point was about auto OEMs using existing designs and not creating all-new products.

BREAKING: PM Modi to unveil 400 Nano Electrics for Ola in Delhi

There will be 400 Tata Nano Electric cabs in use by Ola in the initial stages. Ola has already been promoting Ola Share to reduce the pollution levels in the national capital. With this, it will be a big initiative from the company. The new Nano Electric should have a range of close to 150 kilometres and these will be all white in colour. These vehicles will have similar technology like the Tigor electric. The batteries will be located under the seat too.

SCOOP! Tata Electric Nano will be launched as the Jayem Neo

SCOOP! Tata Electric Nano will be launched as the Jayem Neo

Jayem will source the electric powertrain from Electra EV, a specialist firm in the business of design, development and supply of electric powertrains, battery packs as well as charging infrastructure. Electra EV is a one-stop shop for providing solutions in the electrified vehicle space.

The Neo will be powered by a 48 Volt system and 17kW (23hp) which is a modest output for a car weighing around 800kg (the conventional 623cc petrol Nano weighs 636kg). However, this specification of the Neo will only be available for the fleet market and not for personal use and according to sources is ‘powerful enough to serve the purpose as a city taxi’. Sources claim an ARAI cycle range of 200km on a full charge, which drops to around 140km with four persons and air-conditioning.

The Neo will be a Jayem branded car carrying no Tata badge, however the sides will bear a ‘powered by Electra EV’ moniker.

Jayem will supply the first batch of 400 Neos to taxi aggregator Ola Cabs at launch, which could be followed by further orders of upto 5,000 units. The Neo will not remain a fleet-only option. There are plans to launch a more powerful version of the Neo for private buyers too.

Contrary to the earlier reports , AutoCar says that the car will be branded as a Jayem product .

Re: SCOOP! Tata Electric Nano will be launched as the Jayem Neo

Good move and by this move the brand Tata will not be christened as Taxi brand along with whatever Jayem can sell, Tata will make money from the factory and platform [clap]

Tata just make sure that there should be enough difference between regular Nano and Jayem neon.

People who have been demanding for different brand, so here it is and am feeling proud as Tata is not letting our pride go by changing Tata Motors brand but building on the existing brand by new and segment challenging vehicles [glasses]

God speed Brand Tata and TML
