Renault India’s Next Launch is 7-Seat Crossover MPV

Renault has pledged to launch an all-new product in India every year, starting this year. This year marks the launch of the Duster-based Renault Captur in India, expected in showrooms in 3-4 weeks. Bookings for the Hyundai Creta rival are currently open across the country.



For 2018, ET Auto reports that Renault is readying a 7-seat crossover (codename: Renault RBC) for launch in India. Further details have not been provided by the publication. From past reports about Renault RBC, it will slot below the Renault Lodgy and rival the Maruti Ertiga, Honda BR-V and even the Datsun GO+. While its bigger sibling is based on the M0 platform, reports suggest that Renault RBC will ride on an extended version of the Kwid’s CMF-A platform – rumoured to be called CMF-A+.

Renault could not find the success they had hoped for with the Lodgy in India and therefore weren’t able to take advantage of the demand for practical, 7-seat vehicles. With RBC, Renault could have another attempt at the segment, this time with a less expensive product featuring tougher styling, good equipment levels, smaller footprint and a fuel-efficient range of engines.



Also in the pipeline is a compact SUV (codenamed Renault HBC) in 2019 to challenge the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Tata Nexon. Prices for both RBC and HBC are expected to start from under INR 8 Lakhs.

Renault's Maruti Ertiga competitor (Renault RBC) spied testing for the first time

In October last year, Renault confirmed a new sub-4 m MPV for the Indian market. Spy shots shared on Facebook by Jerrin V Jose appear to be that of the upcoming Renault model. This is the first documented sighting of the Kwid-based Renault RBC (codename) 7-seat MPV.



The front end features Renault's signature trapezoidal grille with horizontal slats. The inner portion of the headlamp unit appears to be narrower, again a signature Renault look. The Renault RBC test mule sports bumper mounted LED pilot lamps. Roof rails are also present and the vehicle rides on steel wheels painted black.

The spy shot of the rear does not reveal much save for a tailgate-mounted number plate housing and rear wiper. Unlike the Lodgy, the RBC does not appear to have an upright tail section. Based on the spy shots, the test mule seems to be wearing a near production ready body.

Groupe Renault announced its 'Drive the Future' mid-term plan covering the 2017-2022 period in October 2017. These plans include a 'Compact MPV' for India, which what can be seen in the images here. This 7-seat model is based on the CMF-A+ platform, which is a derivative of the CMF-A platform that underpins the Renault Kwid.

While the company has not announced when it plans to launch the Renault RBC in India, it has, on multiple occasions, confirmed its intentions to launch a new product every year. Their last new car launch took place in November 2017 - Renault Captur. For 2018, it seems the company will launch this compact MPV.

As reported in December last year, Renault is looking at introducing more entry-level products in the Indian market over the next four years. Apart from the Renault RBC compact MPV, there could be a compact SUV based on the CMF-A platform in the pipeline as well. By 2022, the French carmaker will launch a Kwid based EV in the Indian market. Prototypes are already undergoing testing in China and once launch there, it will make its way to India as per reports.



Renault's current lineup in India includes the Renault Kwid, Renault Duster, Renault Lodgy, and the Renault Captur. The Renault Pulse and the Renault Scala were discontinued in October 2017.
